What was your favourite ice cream flavour or type when you were a child and now ?

I grewed up in the 70s and 80s when there wasn't quite the choice there is now. There was Lyons Maid, Walls and Midland Counties with vanilla, Cornish, raspberry ripple and Neopolitan. I think I liked Cornish the best. Some shops sold the fancy Napoli soft scoop ice cream - I usually had the lime flavour but sometimes orange or strawberry. I never liked chocolate ice cream. King Cones or Cornettos were just becoming popular in the mid 70s.

I haven't had any ice cream for years so I don't know what's popular these days. Is pistachio any good ?

As a kid, Raspberry ripple the cheap supermarket own brand big tub or blackcurrant ripple from the posh farm shop near grandmas.

Now coffee flavour. But if that posh farm shop still existed I think I'd still like the blackcurrant ripple.

Then (1970s) probably vanilla, or strawberry ice cream- or orange sorbet.

Now- vanilla from Notriannis in Blackpool, or rose and violet ice creams I had in Brittany last year.

apricotdreams · 23/08/2020 00:14

@RoadworksAgain I have violet ice cream when we go to south of France. It's is the best ice cream ever!

I was a Gino Ginelli aficionado as well. I can still sing the entire jingle from the ad. My favourite was the strawberry one that had strawberry pieces in it, although I liked tutti frutti as well.

My favourite now is Phish Food. I don’t actually like chocolate ice cream on its own though.

Anordinarymum · 23/08/2020 00:37

Raspberry Ripple then and still is :)

PickAChew · 23/08/2020 00:39

Loved neapolitan.

Lactose intolerant and my teeth aren't what they were so don't eat ice cream any more.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 23/08/2020 00:48

My favourite as a child was either mint choc chip or rum & raisin. I thought I was so grown up being allowed that Grin

I very rarely eat ice cream these days so there's probably a world of flavours I've never tried. As it is my favourite is still mint choc chip (I haven't seen rum & raisin for years), or cheap vanilla with soy sauce.

motorcyclenumptiness · 23/08/2020 01:02

Are you Heston Blumenthal?! Smile
Fave ice cream as a child was a Midnight Mint choc ice. These days I like the occasional vegan almond Magnum.

SaltyLou · 23/08/2020 01:05

@motorcyclenumptiness in Japan they have some bizarre ice cream flavours including cuttlefish or red bean. also many exotic (and some weird) kit Kat flavours as well.

Grin no! I wish I was as clever with food as him! DS saw it on a YouTube video where they were trying weird food combos. We had the ingredients so thought we'd try it. It works! Like salted caramel I guess.
Flaxmeadow · 23/08/2020 01:30

Maxibon then and now

Crystal87 · 23/08/2020 01:32

Mine choc chip was my favourite. I'm not a huge fan of ice cream these days but I like plainish flavours like vanilla or pistachio if I'm having one.

BiarritzCrackers · 23/08/2020 01:36

Mint choc chip, or orange choc chip, as a child, if we had scoopy ice cream.

As an adult, one scoop pistachio, one scoop coffee. I very seldom find these two on offer at the same place, but I live in hope.

BiarritzCrackers · 23/08/2020 01:39

Although if we ate out at the local Italian, I would have lemon sorbet inside the frozen lemon for pudding, which was an utterly thrilling concept to the 8 year old me.

Slinkymalinky1 · 23/08/2020 02:11

I never really liked ice cream as a child. Then I discovered bubble gum ice cream as an adult. I bloody love it! Can't get it anywhere though, unless at a proper ice cream shop

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 23/08/2020 02:20

Mint choc chip when I was a child. Now that ice cream is much nicer, (or I can afford much nicer) I like vanilla.

Deathraystare · 23/08/2020 06:25

I hate most of the shop bought ice cream as it is far too sweet. I still love Mr Whippy! However when in Hampshire I go for the New Forest ice cream. Honey and ginger or rum and raisin. I also love coffee. I must admit Waitrose did a lovely coffee one but not my local one. They also did a smashing lime and coconut one too.

I absolutely hate all those sickly salted caramel and cookie dough nonsense that pollutes the shelves - looking at you B&J and Hagen Daaz!

I actually prefer sorbet though.

TinySongstress · 23/08/2020 06:35

There's a dairy farm ice cream parlour near me called Wallings which does in red ice creams.
Blackcurrant Liquorice, Rum Raisin and Christmas Pudding are my favourites.

As a child I used to love strawberry supermousses

optimisticpessimist01 · 23/08/2020 09:00

Always been mint choc chip! I look forward to going to the coast just so I can have one! Mmmmm

NewName2106 · 23/08/2020 09:07

Rum and raisin or choc mint as a child and it was a holiday treat. And I still choose rum and raisin now if its available, in fact I had one last week on a day out.

My favourite now is Hagen Daz Belgium Chocolate.... yummy!

WildRosie · 23/08/2020 13:58

Mint choc chip seems to be a recurring flavour on here.
I once made blackcurrant ice cream (Delia Smith recipe) using tinned blackcurrants in syrup. I didn't know what I could do with the syrup so it went down the drain but the ice cream worked a treat.
I've seen Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall make tomato ice cream on television. Odd idea but it proved popular.

Callesticks farm near to Perranporth does the most amazing ice cream flavours. Last time I was there I had a scoop of rhubarb and a scoop of jaffa cake
theoldtrout01876 · 23/08/2020 16:40

I dont eat icecream at all now but as a kid it was a special treat. The highlight of my year growing up was going to Edinburgh zoo and being treated to an icecream. They were yellow and square and you put them in a square cone thingy. I remember them being the best thing ever, like frozen custard. No idea what they were as I never saw them anywhere else.

TwizzledTurkey · 23/08/2020 17:03

Double chocolate was always my choice as a kid, now it’s either rum and raisin or fudge (if they have it)

Graphista · 23/08/2020 17:08

Another tutti Frutti fan here can't get that anywhere now!

Nowadays it's a close call between mint choc chip, Irn bru and tablet flavours (but the latter 2 have to be not too sweet which some places theirs are)
