What was your favourite ice cream flavour or type when you were a child and now ?

I grewed up in the 70s and 80s when there wasn't quite the choice there is now. There was Lyons Maid, Walls and Midland Counties with vanilla, Cornish, raspberry ripple and Neopolitan. I think I liked Cornish the best. Some shops sold the fancy Napoli soft scoop ice cream - I usually had the lime flavour but sometimes orange or strawberry. I never liked chocolate ice cream. King Cones or Cornettos were just becoming popular in the mid 70s.

I haven't had any ice cream for years so I don't know what's popular these days. Is pistachio any good ?

Another Neopolitan fan. Also Vienetta and Arctic Roll.

I still love Vienetta.

JumpingFrogs · 25/08/2020 14:40

The square cone and square slab of icecream were my favourites too. Or a Rossi's icecream on Southend pier (a local delicacy in 1970's Essex)
These days I favour Kelly's honeycomb or Eton Mess, or Marsh Farm blackcurrant with clotted cream

Chocolate everything was my favourite as a child. Pistachio is really good. I had it in Italy and it was the nicest ice cream I've ever had.

Only three ( or 6, depending on how you count it) types of icecream avaialable when I was a child.
At home - a block of Neapolitan on birthdays - my favourite of the three flavours (although we always had a slice with all three) was the chocolate - chocolate would still be my no.1 choice today.

From the ice cream can - a Mr Whippy (so creamy!!) or a Mivvy - I liked the strawberry one best.

As a teenager we occasionally had a slice of Arctic roll or a choc ice for school pudding - the excitement was intense.

And I remember the first Vienettas - I still think they are really good value today.

Another vote for mint choc chip as a child, although Neopolitan was a close favourite too. As an adult love coffee and pistachio if I can find them, or an occasional vanilla oyster shell from a van normally on holiday. Had some wonderful liquorice ice cream at gastro pub about two years ago best thing on the menu!

bengalcat · 25/08/2020 16:24

Vanilla or raspberry ripple as a kid - pistachio now

Strawberrycreamsundae · 25/08/2020 16:27

60’s - Neapolitan ice cream block was the best, raspberry ripple a close second.
Tutti frutti was, and still is (if only you can get it!) my favourite.
I still like Vienetta and I love affrogato 😋😋

Strawberrycreamsundae · 25/08/2020 16:28

Marshfield Icecream is made fairly near here, they have so many flavours but still no Tutti Frutti ☹️

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 25/08/2020 16:32

Mint choc chip. It still is. But if it's a tuv, Mackie's vanilla or Ben and Jerry's phish food. I'm eating it right now.

Happynow001 · 25/08/2020 16:52

I liked all ice cream as a child but remember the neopolitan and the Cornish fondly.

I haven't had any ice cream for years but have been dreaming of the Classic Magnum. Just pure, rich ice cream surrounded by a thick coat of dark chocolate. Mmmm... 😋

I may have to eat some soon for my birthday treat and wean myself off again as I can't stop eating them if they're in the house... 🌹

Happynow001 · 25/08/2020 16:54

Oh and coffee ice cream. I'd let it thaw a bit and add extra coffee powder, whip and refreeze, and it was a bit like eating an espresso. Can't bear the thought of that now. 🌹

HeronLanyon · 25/08/2020 17:15

Oh coffee ice cream ! My old ma used to make this when I was a child.
I also loved cheap vanilla with powdered or even camp ‘coffee’ essence Whipped in and refrozen just like you happynow !

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 25/08/2020 17:22

I didn’t like ice cream as a child. I’m still not massively keen on it. So naturally my job is all about ice cream ConfusedGrin

Used to love a Lord Toffingham or the ice cream cones from the kiosk in my high street (alas now gone), nowadays I'm partial to a Magnum, usually white chocolate.

hastingsmua1 · 25/08/2020 17:56

I love the fact that I live near branches store of Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose. Always lots of decent ice cream options - it’s been fun trying them all out during lockdown!

Drogonssmile · 25/08/2020 17:58

I think Neapolitan was my fave growing up. Now I like strawberry or vanilla although I had some amazing honey and ginger ice cream from a local farm on Sunday and I'd happily just have that for the rest of my life!

Catland · 25/08/2020 18:00

I would never have any other flavour other than vanilla as a child!
Since having children I have gone off vanilla and I love strawberry insteadGrin

Disfordarkchocolate · 25/08/2020 18:04

Mint choc chip as a child and cherry now. With pistachio as a close second.

Sidewinder30 · 25/08/2020 18:04

Then... chocolate.

Now... I don't have a fav. I like so many that I buy different types whenever I'm treating myself. Yum.

Besom · 25/08/2020 18:04

Strawberry or mint choc chip as a child. Never liked chocolate flavour then or now although I love chocolate.

Now I like salted caramel

BooteusMaximus · 25/08/2020 18:07

child - raspberry ripple
mid youth - bounty
now - salted caramel

I did like some carte d'or ranges a few years ago which had fruit flavours running through them (blackcurrant was one, mandarine was another but not sure whether you had them in the UK)
A local gelataria did a lovely white chocolate icecream and another did vanilla with chocolate orange bits.
More recently I tried Ben and Jerry's Birthday Cake for the first time which was nice and had my first exotic solero Grin knows how to live

Mum2b2020 · 25/08/2020 18:14

Then: tutti fruity. I'm going to have to search for some now I've remembered about it

Now: mint choc chip or Häagen-Dazs Belgian choc

MrsSchadenfreude · 25/08/2020 18:53

Cornish, Raspberry Ripple or coffee. Then and now.

Wincarnis · 25/08/2020 18:55

Mint choc chip then and now
