Crying Laughing at Frasier

I watching the episode where Frasier ends up on a date with the new guy at the station who he thought he was setting up with Daphne. I’m watching it with 16 yo DS2. We always stick an episode on when there’s nothIng else on.

It may be 25 years old but it still holds up. It’s all 90s, autumnal and cosy (I know..shoot me)

Tell me your favourite episodes.

Speaking of BeBe (and yes, she is wonderful), the one where she cons Frasier to go on a morning chat show and they cook something or other.

AlternativePerspective · 20/08/2020 19:25

The one towards the end where he walks into the dating agency by mistake. “Take my card.” “No I don’t need your card,” “For a friend then,”. “I have no friends. ... ... who would be in need of your services.” Grin

Ahhhhh, I have found my people.
I love Frasier.
When I get the living room to myself it’s my go to watch. It’s so warm and comforting.

I know it’s been mentioned but I love the ski lodge episode.

"It took three Cranes to lift you" Martin says to Daphne when all three of them lift her up after she was stuck in the floor.

And "But I ate a salad with every meal!" Fraser says when he hasn't lost any weight.

Figmentofimagination · 20/08/2020 22:25

What is the best way to stream this as I think someone upthread said it's not on All4? I don't watch live tv.

Flyonawalk · 20/08/2020 23:30

The final episode, in which he refers to his catchphrase, ‘I’m listening...’

‘Well you were listening too, and for that I am eternally grateful.’

All the cast and crew crowd round to hear this farewell. Epic TV and more than comedy.

TheKarenWhoKnocks · 21/08/2020 10:42

Ah, I love Frasier. Have become a bit obsessed with it during lockdown. The way the main cast are with each other is wonderful: you can tell they really get on irl. One of the loveliest examples of their closeness I think is the stupid "fat Daphne" storyline. Daphne, played by Jane Leeves who is at that point heavily pregnant in real life, has apparently got so fat that when she twists her ankle she can't get off the floor. All three men help her up and then embrace her before she leaves for a health spa. It's the last episode of the series and what I think it really shows is her three closest colleagues hugging her and wishing her well before she goes on maternity leave. So nice.

@PyongyangKipperbang re the guy from Mash, David Ogden Stiers, I always think his storyline on Frasier is very touching as he came out irl quite some time later, stating that he wanted to spend his last years living the life he wanted. So sad that he had to wait so long after his character on the show was free to be out.

It was an interesting time really in terms of homosexuality and mainstream TV - as with the episode referred to in the op, there are a number of gay characters and their gayness isn't the story - it just becomes a characteristic they happen to have that then becomes an element of whatever comedy of errors is playing out that week. This ofc reflects the fact that a lot of the team, both creators and performers, were gay, although not headline "out" - they were tacitly part of a discreet scene at a time when societal attitudes were changing but there wasn't quite full acceptance especially for participants in big ticket shows like Frasier.

I am watching and they are heading off to the lakeside house that Niles just won in the divorce. Martin says he will bring whiskey in case of snakebit and when Nikes says there are no snakes there, Martin says, 'all right i'll bring a snake'. It just tickled me for some reason.

TheKarenWhoKnocks Not sure how true it is as it’s on Wikipedia but it says that Jane Leeves’ daughter has Peri Gilpin as her Godmother (and she’s Peri Gilpin’s daughter’s Godmother, and her son’s Godfathers are David Hyde Pierce and John Mahoney. So if it’s true then the cast were certainly close in real life.

TheKarenWhoKnocks · 21/08/2020 21:46

@MadisonAvenue afaik that is all true. I mean, I've heard those bits of information separately elsewhere. It fits with them all having a great working dynamic on screen as well.

Mummadeeze · 21/08/2020 21:52

I love the spa one where Niles and Frasier are never satisfied with the tier they get access to. It is all so brilliantly observed though and well acted. Apart from Daphne’s brother’s accent. Oh my goodness that was bad!!!

Beachhuts90 · 22/08/2020 00:26

Frasier is one of the best shows ever. I love all of the ones mentioned and so many more. Remember when the taxi driver goes into labour and Frasier and Niles fail to help, then Martin says he's a retired cop and she goes "well why didn't you say so before??"

Is there somewhere online people are streaming it?

There's a few episodes on YouTube and dailymotion. It used to be on Netflix but it's not now.

I've got a youview box so I'm recording it gradually off channel 4. I've calculated it will use up approximately 16% of the box to keep them all.

TheKarenWhoKnocks · 22/08/2020 00:54

Actually I've just had another wee look and there are absolutely loads on dailymotion. I got dozens of hits from typing "Frasier s01 dailymotion" into Google videos tab and most of them are all full episodes.

Deadringer · 22/08/2020 17:07

I am just watching the one where Daphne gets engaged to Donny, poor Niles has me in tears.

TSSDNCOP · 22/08/2020 19:54

@TheKarenWhoKnocks the entire Moon family's accents were atrocious. Were they supposed to be funny or ironic in a way that went over my head?

boltzmannbrains · 23/08/2020 04:06

There’s a great moment where Frasier goes into Daphne’s bedroom and finds a coupley-looking photo of her with Prince Charles, and it’s literally never mentioned again.

Same as Daphne having once been a child TV star.

ISpeakJive · 23/08/2020 08:59

Frasier is just comedy gold. Too many quick witted lines but my favourite episode is The Matchmaker!

Roz: I'm helping Frasier find a man for Daphne.

Niles: What?

Roz: Here we go! He's a tennis instructor, and his name is Brick.

Niles: Dear God, Frasier - Sven, Gunther, Brick? Why not just lather Daphne up with baby oil and hurl her over the wall of a prison yard?

Also I love the line from an episode where Frasier needs to host a party and gets his builder to come and fix the apartment (think it’s ‘Kisses Sweeter than Wine)

Martin : Jeez, I though you were just going to slit your wrists. It looks like you went for death by a thousand cuts.
Frasier : I cut myself because I was shaving without water. And why was there no water? Because I had to move your chair, which gouged the floor, which made me call for Joe, who found bad pipes, who called for Cecil, who ate the cat that killed the rat that lived in the house that Frasier built!

Brilliant!

ISpeakJive · 23/08/2020 09:00

Also, according to Jewish folklore ‘Lilith’ means Demonic 😆

QuietLifeNC · 23/08/2020 09:22

More love for Bebe. The episode where she and Frasier sleep together is also great:

Frasier: All right, get your cracks in now
Niles: No, no - I'm just glad you're OK
Frasier: Thank you
Niles: I always assumed she killed after mating :-)

SenecaFallsRedux · 23/08/2020 14:28

I just watched "The Two Mrs. Cranes" where Daphne's former boyfriend comes from England and she pretends to be married to Niles and Roz pretends to be Maris, but married to Frasier. And Martin pretends to be a retired astronaut. That one is at the top of my list of favorites now.
