Snacks

Went shopping with partner as I spent 10 days with him and he veered down the crisps and crap aisle and I merrily wandered past it. He shouted me back and said "Dont you want any snacks?!" in a mildly shocked way and I think my face gave away the fact that I never eat snacks and it had never entered my head that he would.

Then he was heading straight for the tills when I said "Hang on, wine!!" and he was clearly surprised as it isnt on his supermarket "route" just as snacks isnt on mine.

He got his snacks. I bought a box of wine. Each to their own.

There is literally no item I would never buy. Everything has its uses.

I grow my own vegetables, bake my own bread, have hens for eggs and cook from scratch but would never discount buying anything if I needed it

CommonCarder · 16/08/2020 22:36

Surely most people just buy a tiny selection of what's on offer in a modern supermarket.

It's easier to list what we buy!

justoverthehorizon · 16/08/2020 22:36

fabric softner
air freshner

Ernieshere · 16/08/2020 22:36

Frozen aisle - I forgot about that.

I will only buy -

Petit pois
Cod fish fingers
Magnums

Thats it, I'm quite quick down that aisle!

Ultra processed convenience prepackaged especially those with industrial coded ingredients or essentially water and some artificial chemical flavourings, with sugars and salts etc. Therefore I tend to stay clear of much of the supermarket content. Scratch cook raw ingredients or dine out. Not always possible but needs must. Conversely I don’t believe in organic as it would be impossible to form much of the total diet of food intake so I rather go for better value quality shop brought ingredients instead of usually higher priced organic. If budget allows and for a treat (or pre Covid private kitchen supper club etc) than regular daily patronage - Daylesford farm shop amongst other farm shops and farmers markets and wholesale markets such as Billingsgate for fresh local waters sea fish and crustaceans or imported Indian Ocean frozen fish are worth a trip to bulk purchase stock up from. Whole Foods is good but I rather Trader Joe’s (not available in UK) and Dean & Deluca which is no longer operational in London as Mount Street Mayfair spot now occupied by The Pasticceria Marchesi 1824 (Prada). This is Milanese finest and probably the poshest instagram über fashionista spot in town and therefore not my cup of tea as beyond my league if not inspiration.

FunnysInLaJardin · 16/08/2020 22:37

+1 for fabric softener. I never grew up using it then discovered later in life that it make your towels and clothes greasy.

goingtotown · 16/08/2020 22:44

What’s wrong with fabric softener?

Deadringer · 16/08/2020 22:45

@homemadecommunistrussia

Fabric softener Air freshener

FizzyPink · 16/08/2020 22:48

Do you use anything instead of fabric softener? We’ve just run out and I was holding off doing washing until tomorrow when I can buy some but is it fine to just not use it??

Also to the poster that doesn’t buy bin bags, what do you put your rubbish in?

I don’t buy -
Frozen or tinned meat
Tins in general except tuna
Fruit
Milk
Cereal
Most carbs except pasta for DP
Any jar type sauces

I think it depends where you live. I have very hard water and couldn't be without fabric softener, clothes and towels are so rough without it.
SockYarn · 16/08/2020 22:49

Fabric softener is a waste of money. We live in a soft water area anyway but I want my clothes smelling of clean, not some horrid artificial fragrance. mil is a lenient addict and her towels are awful - softened to within an inch of their life and so sloppy they dint actually dry you.

Pointless stuff. Along with that silly anti bacterial stuff they sell to add to a load of clothes.
