What did you think were great baby names when you were younger and how do you feel about them now?

Found an old diary from when I was about 9, and apparently I was adamant if I had 2 daughters they would be called Bethany Jade and Jenna Sylfae. I don’t hate those names now but they probably wouldn’t make the shortlist!

Did anyone else have names picked out for future children a long time in advance? Did you end up using them or have a complete change of heart?

I was going to have 3 boys called Jacob, Jaden and Griffin.

My boys list is now more like Max, Lachlan, Cormac and Torin.

I never liked any girls names when I was younger!

PenelopeParallelogram · 15/08/2020 20:28

I remember declaring, aged 9 or so, that my future children, who would obviously be boy girl twins, would be Alexander and Alexandra.

And I confirm that my first born was actually called one of those names!

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 15/08/2020 20:28

My son would have been Jordan
My daughter would have been Sharon 🤣

I was going to call my DD Posy obviously was obsessively reading Ballet Shoes.

I can confirm that my actual DD is not called Posy.

userabcname · 15/08/2020 20:31

I was going to have one daughter called Victoria. I have 2 boys (neither of which are called Victoria Grin)

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 15/08/2020 20:34

I loved the name Elora Danan from the film Willow.

MondeoFan · 15/08/2020 20:35

I loved names like Jade, Sapphire, Crystal etc instead I chose 2 old fashioned names for my 2.
Could never come across any suitable boys names I liked.

CormoranStrike · 15/08/2020 20:36

Not quite super young, but when I was 18 I dreamt I had a baby girl called Jennifer. At 30 I did have!

00100001 · 15/08/2020 20:41

I was having a boy called Tarmac and a girl called Lemonade Grin

byvirtue · 15/08/2020 20:44

I’m so ashamed I wanted a Debbie Jane so I could call her DJ. I was 8 it was the late 80s early 90s I was probably wearing a shell suit at the same time.

Then Fern, Ruby & Scarlet were dolls names and I met a Hermionie which I thought was an amazing name until Harry Potter.

TillyTheTiger · 15/08/2020 20:46

When I was about 8 my baby names would have been Bethany, Carlotta and Suzanna for girls and Julian and Matthew for boys.

I now have a son and daughter and none of those names made it onto my shortlists.

Pepperwand · 15/08/2020 20:47

I was going to have a boy called Blaine and then girls called Lace and Mae. I obviously watched a lot of American TV as in the end I went for quite traditional, Biblical names.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 15/08/2020 20:47

I was going to have girl twins, May and Gemini. Born in late May, obviously.

totallyyesno · 15/08/2020 20:48

Reading my diary I can see I was very interested in, ahem, quirky spellings of common names which is probably why I cringe if people suggest them now.

Namechange6005 · 15/08/2020 20:50

Prince for a boy and tabitha and Cindy for my imaginary twins. None of my children have any of those names!

jomaIone · 15/08/2020 20:52

I was obsessed with the name Ashley, for a girl. This was when I was in primary school, I had one of those teddy's you can draw on and she was called Ashley.

GrouchyKiwi · 15/08/2020 20:54

From about 11 my favourite name was Magda (after meeting a fantastic woman with that name).

Then from teenaged years it was Evelyn and Abigail. We used Evelyn.

I still love the other two, but Magda would be alliterative, which I'm not a fan of, and I couldn't convince DH that Abigail is a beautiful name. Bah!

stayathomer · 15/08/2020 20:54

I always thought Molly, Rosie, Rosemary and Rachel. I don't know now if I'd choose any of them even though I still like them!

Vanillaradio · 15/08/2020 20:55

I was going to have triplet girls called Belinda, Fenella and Rosemary. (I seem to remember that each one was to have their own chauffeur driven Rolls Royce to drive them about as well) After that I was going to have one girl called Bethany. Wasn't going to have any boys, ever...(I now have one ds and 0 Rolls Royces)

MillyTree · 15/08/2020 20:56

I loved the boys names Harrison and Gardner. And for a girl I loved Emmeline.

They definitely did not make the shortlist for my DD and DS Grin

Mumfymum · 15/08/2020 20:56

Sadie, Queenie and Simon. I did end up with 2 girls and a boy - but not those names.

OuterSpaceGirl · 15/08/2020 20:57

I wanted a girl called Darrell. I was a big Malory towers fan. I’m surprised that the name isn’t popular at all.

Crunchymum · 15/08/2020 21:00

Cassie for a girl. Was set on that for about a decade.

Have 2 DD and neither is a Cassie.

Crunchymum · 15/08/2020 21:02

Oh gosh I loved Lacey too..... never planned on having boys (have one)

Reluctantcavedweller · 15/08/2020 21:03

Clarissa, Claudette, Nora, Madge and Anastasia. I wasn't particularly interested in boys' names as I was definitely having all girls...Grin.

Only have DS so far but can confirm none of those are still on the list if we do eventually have a DD.

Though Nora is becoming popular again...
