Because bitter male cucumbers don't bring joy, but phallic aubergines can raise an irreverent smile.

AD chat continues about life, the universe and everything. We know the answer is 42 but what is the question?
6x7?
How many roads must a man walk down?
How many unsadly reincarnations have PHE put into the database?

Thanks for the new thread @BogRollBOGOF!

bellabelly · 14/08/2020 00:32

How can you tell if a cucumber is male? I have grown them for the first time this year and have been eating and enjoying them all. Then a friend said that you have to throw the male ones away because they're bitter - I'm so confused! Sorry, i know this is not really the point of the thread but is there a way to tell before you take a bite?

PickAChew · 14/08/2020 00:38

Checking in with a fresh, firm and glossy aubergine and freshly cut hair.

Thanks for the new thread.

99 I reported that post can't say what i thought of many of the posters on there. Did ask one a question though.😉

This place cant get much more toxic can it?

BogRollBOGOF · 14/08/2020 00:49

DH reckons all cucumbers taste bitter.
I reckon DH is a philistine.
DH has miraculously survived 5 months working from home although it's a close thing when he keeps calling the Worcester Sauce "Lea and Perry" Grin

I hear rimblings about soft play and ice rinks.

Last time I went to an ice rink, I got scolded! (Very hot black coffee squidged out of the cup, realised it was too painful to hold the cup long enough to put it down safely, dropped the lot and bolted for a cold tap in the toilets for the next 10-15 minutes)
But I didn't fall over on the ice Wink

NannyPhlegm · 14/08/2020 01:35

Is it just me, or are all the media outlets now using the term "Coronavirus" instead of "Covid-19"?
I dislike this intensely. Covid is a type of coronavirus. There are so many more of them, most of them toothless. What is the purpose in blurring the lines?

Like my Maths teacher used to say...every square is a rectangle, but every rectangle is not a square.

bellabelly · 14/08/2020 01:40

Thanks, @Butterer! That's very helpful. Smile

Isnt the common cold a form of coronavirus

NannyPhlegm · 14/08/2020 02:25

@HeIenaDove

Isnt the common cold a form of coronavirus
I'm pretty sure it is HelenaDove. Which is why I'm really not happy about the media pivoting to scare mongering about coronaviruses in general.
Pleasedontdothat · 14/08/2020 06:26

Checking in - thanks for the new thread bogoff

With my pedantic hat on, the common cold is caused by a number of viruses, most are rhinoviruses but a substantial minority are caused by one of the coronaviruses (there are many). Most people will have had at least one coronavirus in their lifetime, hence the possible protective effect of T-cells.
Covid-19 is the illness which is caused by the SARS-COV2 coronavirus, in the sane way that AIDS is caused by the HIV virus.

You know that statistic that was doing the rounds a while ago that schoolchildren were at more risk of being hit by lightning... yesterday afternoon dd went to bring her horse in from the field as the rain was starting to get heavy and there were distant rumblings of thunder. Suddenly, there was a huge noise, which sounded like a bomb, horse reared (he never does this) and she only just managed to stop him from tanking off in (understandable) terror.. a house about 30m away had been hit by lightning and caught fire. All very dramatic and rather more of an existential threat than Covid at that point ...

Hello, I think I've missed one if not two whole threads - life is busy at the moment. Waiting eagerly to see what sop the Welsh Government throws in our direction about meeting indoors.

Also watching as it becomes clear that cancelling exams just might have been a mistake. I have never seen, and still don't see, why they couldn't have got pupils sitting exams into schools 2m apart. Almost no one else was in schools at that point, so there must have been space.

@NannyPhlegm this is what my husband and I were chatting about last night in regards to NZ, will they start quarantining people in special facilities who have the flu or a cold to stop them spreading? It's a slippery slope once you start locking people up for being unwell

Ibake · 14/08/2020 07:27

Morning all. Thanks for the new thread @BogRollBOGOF title should certainly have the D's scratching their heads!

Busy week in our house - almost had a feel of normality. Have had workmen over too and none of them seem to see the need for all this fuss. There are a lot of people just getting on with life and I guess they're probably not the type to be on MN!

Off for a day out, meeting my best friend and my goddaughters halfway. Have a good day all.

Littlebelina · 14/08/2020 07:35

Checking in.

Little down this morning, we discussed in the last thread about friends. Had a reminder (why social media is bad for your health) this morning that a group of friends still meet up but I drifted from them. I understand the reasons why (they all had seconds kids around the same time and I went back to work full time) and I'm the only one who drifted from the group but still hurts. I struggle to maintain friendships longer term and not entirely sure why. Think I can be intense though.

On the other hand my ds was spontaneously kind to his little sister which was lovely.

On the end of the last thread, what is baking gin?

Littlebelina · 14/08/2020 07:36

I'm not the only one who drifted that should say

Drivingdownthe101 · 14/08/2020 07:38

Glenthebattleostrich · 14/08/2020 07:45

Hello!

Nanny, DH and I were talking about the change in language by the news outlets the other days. As cases decrease their language is getting more dramatic. On the radio one news report said a 400% increase in cases in New Zealand, coupled with a 50% increase in Australia was fueling fears of a second wave there. They were talking about less than 200 cases in total.

I'm working today because I (kindly and regrettably) let a family swap days after they were quarantined. They are still expecting me to take the financial hit because they chose to go on holiday knowing Spain could end up on a quarantine list. V pissed off.

And my bloody tomatoes haven't ripened yet.

Pinkflipflop85 · 14/08/2020 07:47

Read the news whilst doing the night feed in the early hours.

Soft play can reopen.

I never thought that I would be so fucking happy that soft play could open!

ISaySteadyOn · 14/08/2020 07:58

Checking in.

I have tomato plants which seem happy but they only have flowers yet.

I sometimes wonder if my life would be easier if I were more Dementor and wore the stupid face covering. But I actually physically can't and my conscience wouldn't let me. So now I don't feel unlocked at all. I am fine in my local area which is pretty AD but the instant I even contemplate public transport (which used to be my go to) my heart rate increases and I can barely breathe because I am terrified of being attacked. I know it's stupid of me and probably won't happen but it is a physical reaction.

DH much braver. He took the DC on a train!
But he is male and I think possibly less of a target than a middle aged woman. Or it's his 'Don't mess with me' walk.
