Harmonising whilst singing happy birthday

Caveat: I know there's bigger and worse things going on in the world that I should be annoyed at, but here we are.

Does this make anyone else totally cringe? I have a family member who always harmonises when we sing happy birthday, especially the last bit. I find it so cringey.. its a bit me me me when the point of singing happy birthday is for the birthday person to be in the limelight. Also isn't it something awful we all sing just because we have to, not because we want to?

Am I alone in this? Do you harmonise when singing happy birthday? If so - why?!

(I promise I'm also a happy, fun person who likes to have a good time. I appreciate i sound like a massive birthday grinch)

This made me laugh. Yes it’s totally cringe and worst of all, my mother does it so I have witnessed this at every single sodding birthday for over 30 years now.

monstermunchforlunch · 12/08/2020 12:55

When we have a family birthday one or more of us will do this to Mariah Carey levels to take the piss because we are oh so funny Grin I think I’d cringe myself inside out if I heard someone do it unironically and we would never do it if there was non family members there!

Diorissimo1985 · 12/08/2020 12:56

She tried to get us to do different parts - almost barbershop style - but alas, her children are normal human beings so we refused

I have never experienced this - but it sounds funny ! I get why you’d cringe if it was every time though:)

NCParanoia · 12/08/2020 12:58

Yes you're right to point out Monster that doing it ironically is okay and funny (though maybe still a little bit mememe...Blush). This family member properly goes for it like its a performance, and yes she is totally doing it seriously!

Also I am putting in paragraphs but the android MN app is fucking shit and gets rid of them!!

People do this?! I'm cringing

Sojo88 · 12/08/2020 13:00

Now you've said it, OP - yes it is quite annoying!

otterbaby · 12/08/2020 13:01

That's awful 😂 part of the fun of singing happy birthday is to sound like a group of wailing cats!

NCParanoia · 12/08/2020 13:01

Oh Dior that is next level!

CMOTDibbler · 12/08/2020 13:03

I know someone who does this, and also will do the soprano part if we are at a church wedding/ school concert etc and everyone else is just singing normally. Cringetastic

Justmuddlingalong · 12/08/2020 13:05

My mother still sings the "you look like a monkey and live in a zoo" version and then cackles manickly at her hilarity. I'm 50 FFS. 🙄

Cheetahfajita · 12/08/2020 13:06

What does harmonise mean? Blush

Pearsapiece · 12/08/2020 13:09

Hahaha my dad does this. I hate it. Especially when my brother joins in with a different harmony and trys to sing the second verse (yes, there's a second verse to happy birthday, yes it's shitter than the first!). I'm dreading the kids nativity with my dad, it was bad enough when he did it at our but at least there was sometimes a hope he would be on shift and not make it! He's now retired so the poor kids are going to go red in the face when grandad thinks he's Pavarotti in the back row

CatRamsey · 12/08/2020 13:09

I wanna know how the harmonies go!

ShirleyPhallus · 12/08/2020 13:09

Omg yes. My extended family are rather musical but it’s never done in a natural way. Always done in a way that looks like they’re auditioning for the next Andrew Lloyd Webber show.

NCParanoia · 12/08/2020 13:09

cheetah harmonising is singing the same line of a song but in a different key so it sounds melodic. Probs not the best description but hopefully you know what I mean!

Exactly otter!

THERES A SECOND VERSE PEARS?!!?
Jesus christ. This information cannot be leaked!!

BlueSwathesChoose · 12/08/2020 13:11

I know someone who does this as well. In any scenario because she is SUCH A GIFTED SINGER who needs everyione to know it. Then she makes a point of singing whatever is being sung in a different lanaguage, the original if she can manage it. (so - German if it is silent night for example).

i stopped sitting next to her at weddings. She belted out such a corker at a wedding a few years back that the people infront of her actually shook with laughter and had to sit down because they were holding their sides so hard.

minnieok · 12/08/2020 13:11

My DD sometimes does but she is a semi pro singer, at work it's normal to but it's an unusual work place. Does it matter, no so don't worry.

monstermunchforlunch · 12/08/2020 13:12

@NCParanoia it’s still very mememe but we’re from a big family so we’re all differing levels of attention seekers, we just add humour to it so we can pretend it’s less annoying Grin

Twickerhun · 12/08/2020 13:13

I have to stop myself from doing this because I know I sound like a total twat. It’s not intentional, it’s just too easy to do without engaging brain. I’d say If someone was doing it for attention or to show off then they deserve the piss to be ripped.

Sojo88 · 12/08/2020 13:14

THERES A SECOND VERSE PEARS?!!?

I've just looked it up - there's actually three verses in total!!

Toilenstripes · 12/08/2020 13:15

I married into a Welsh family and they never miss an opportunity to demonstrate their musical abilities. 😳

PiggyPlumPie · 12/08/2020 13:17

I get cross because DH always sings in a different key to the rest of us. He can't help it but it's quite annoying!
