If you are from Yorkshire, where are you from and what do you call the crumbs that fall off fried fish?

Asking for a friend...

Sraps. North East, quite close to North Yorkshire.

elf81 · 09/08/2020 20:08

Scraps, originally from South Yorkshire and now live in North East... Although someone in Sunderland asked me if I wanted batter the other week!!! Even my 7 year old looked at her in disgust.

justthecat · 09/08/2020 20:08

North yorks - scraps 😬

SalamanderWhale · 09/08/2020 20:09

Bits (originally from near Huddersfield!)

gobbynorthernbird · 09/08/2020 20:10

I'm from Bradford. They're scraps.

And a scallop doesn't have fish in.

MrsWooster · 09/08/2020 20:10

@InDubiousBattle

Scraps, I'm in West Yorkshire (Bradford). My friend in Halifax says 'bits' though. What do you call two pieces of potato with a thin layer of fish in the middle (then battered)? This seems to cause more arguments among my Friends!
Fish cake. A scallop is a slab of battered potato. Also scraps, as per ops question. I grew up near Harry Ramsden’s and you’d get the free from the older kids at school doing their Saturday jobs.
SalamanderWhale · 09/08/2020 20:12

Also, may be outing but there was /(is? not sure its still there) a fish and chip shop where I grew up called wi'bits.

BikeRunSki · 09/08/2020 20:13

Huddersfield - bits

As in the chippy in Mirfield called “Wi’bits”.

Yorkshire people, is it bits or scraps?

CodenameLevonelle · 09/08/2020 20:17

I lived not far from Huddersfield OP and there was a chippy called 'wi'bits' so you are vindicated

mintich · 09/08/2020 20:19

I went to uni in Bradford and it was scraps when I was there

frumpety · 09/08/2020 20:20

BarbiesWorld · 09/08/2020 20:28

Huddersfield here and they're bits bits but dad is from East Yorkshire and I got brought up calling them scraps.

We used to go to a chippy called Wi'bits 😁

PTW1234 · 09/08/2020 20:30

Bits, I have only heard it in very certain parts of West Yorkshire though.

I moved 9 miles up the road to a different town and now say scraps because people look at me like a I crazy if I say bits here Grin

GetThatHelmetOn · 09/08/2020 20:35

Glad to hear I’m not the only one calling them bits, I was starting to think it was just a family thing!

For those who love them on their own... Put them on a kitchen nappy to absorbe the excess oil, add granulated sugar and a bit of powder cinnamon and... they taste like churros! (Now I accept that can count as a total heresy only practiced on a very little region of... my kitchen)
