Yorkshire people, is it bits or scraps?

If you are from Yorkshire, where are you from and what do you call the crumbs that fall off fried fish?

South Yorkshire- bits

Lived in South Leeds for many years. Batter bits are scraps. A fishcake is fish between potato slices and battered. Scallops don’t have fish in them. Bread rolls are breadcakes, although my friend from Bingley called them teacakes. If they had currants in they were currant teacakes.

I’m actually from the other side of the Pennines, so scraps don’t exist and breadcakes are barmcakes.

Bits. I’m from Huddersfield.

As in the chippy in Mirfield called “Wi’bits”

Mirfield (in between Dewsbury and Huddersfield is a special borderline case - both terms are understood there. I'd say more people say scraps than bits, though.

By the way, the chips from Wi'bits are really, really, really good ... evil, but good.

I’ve lived in London (where they don’t exist), Newcastle upon Tyne, Sheffield, Huddersfield/Barnsley borders and S Wales. I’ve heard “scraps” used everywhere, but only come across “bits” in Huddersfield/Barnsley borders.

By the way, the chips from Wi'bits are really, really, really good ... evil, but good.

Scraps in South Yorkshire. I remember my DP not knowing what I was on about when I asked if he wanted scraps from the chippy (he's from over Manchester way).

I also recall being confused as a kid at a chippy that called a chip butty a chip sandwich. Were they posh or was it regional? Still don't know the answer.

I think chip butties are regional. Friend and I from West Yorkshire (so scraps, haddock, beef dripping and proper fish sandwiched with potato slices, battered fish cakes, not the mash potato type) tried to buy chip butties in a fish and chip shop in the West Midlands and they didn't know what we were asking for and once we'd clarified what we wanted they said 'of you mean X' that I can't remember and gave us funny looks for the remaining time that we were there.

So you should, our fish and chips are by far the best in the country. Almost everywhere else I've had them, they've been disappointing. Only other place they've been anywhere near as nice is in Orkney.

I must have grown up weird as it was scrumps in our house!

This is either very specific to towns or totally random! Can't believe people call them bits in Wakey and Dewsbury!! In the middle of those two places in Ossett it's scraps!
