Big barn wedding. We are deciding on our caterers. How would you feel about this menu:

Canapés

Starter- big sharing platter of houmous, olives, cheeses, breads etc (veggie)

Main- braised blade of beef with shallots and mushrooms OR goats cheese and aubergine rollatini (veggie) - both served with new potatoes, honey glazed root veg, green veg in pesto, salad.

Dessert- our (fudgy chocolate) wedding cake

Evening- wood fired pizzas

Kids can have the menu or there will be a kid friendly option too.

Wines on tables. Waiters will ask if anyone would prefer a drink (free) from the bar. Free bar in the evening.

How would you feel about this as a guest? Any dietary requirements catered for too.

I think that sounds lovely!

Also I know people are divided on free bars on here, but I think it's extremely generous. If you can honestly afford it great, but I don't see a problem with limiting it in some way.

Sounds.delicious and thoughtful but I think in this Corona world people will be reluctant to touch a sharing platter or even break off a piece of pizza from a shared plate.
But you could just do without the canapes if you are serving lunch and dinner.
Only problem with lunch is, although I love them, the majority of people I know hate mushrooms.

CuppaZa · 08/08/2020 21:22

Sounds yum Smile

Lockdowners · 08/08/2020 21:25

Good point about shared food. Pizzas will be small individual ones. I can ask caterer about options for individual starters. Thanks! This is exactly why I came to MN.

Sound delicious, but someone will come along to pick it apart, or tell you no go in Covid, or shame you for no vegan option, blah blah blah. Ignore them.

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/08/2020 21:25

I'm intolerant to mushrooms, I'd just politely leave them, no need to make a fuss.

MaggieFS · 08/08/2020 21:26

I'm not a fan of sharing platters (nothing to do with Coronavirus) but I know they don't bother a lot of people (or didn't, at least) but aside from that it looks lovely.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 08/08/2020 21:26

It sounds delicious and I'd love to come to a wedding like that. I take the point about sharing food.

uniglowooljumper · 08/08/2020 21:26

There are plenty of people who aren't arsed about sharing due to fucking coronavirus. The ones who are truly paranoid will likely stay at home anyhow. Fun is something to be feared.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 08/08/2020 21:27

Free bar? I'm there

Lockdowners · 08/08/2020 21:29

Oh there is vegetable tart Tatin with red onion marmalade option for vegans but I don’t think we are actually inviting any vegans

personally hate sharing platters as some bigger always takes more than they should !
otherwise lovely but notnsire about pesto veg!

Roowig2020 · 08/08/2020 21:37

Sounds yummy.

BackforGood · 08/08/2020 21:40

Personally I'm not keen on the starter, but that's only a matter of personal taste. I'd just think 'never mind' and understand that, as a guest, I accept what I'm given.
Main sounds lovely, though I can't see why you'd need the salad - doesn't really 'go' with the braised beef and roast veg.
Dessert - Again, I'd not personally choose fudge cake - I think it is a bit 'heavy' as a 3rd course in one meal, but it's really popular I know, so again, I'd just think 'fair enough'.

Is there tea / coffee after the meal ? Now that is something I really feel finishes a meal properly Smile

Pizza in the evening sounds lovely

I would not expect a free bar.
I've been going to weddings for over 40 years and NEVER had a free bar.

ARoseInHarlem · 08/08/2020 21:54

Same for me on the sharing platter - nothing to do with corona. Just ewww on the hummus (double dipping etc). I don’t mind sliced cheeses but wouldn’t eat anything that I would have to slice (and that therefore other people have sliced, probably by holding onto the cheese with one hand and slicing with the other). Also agree that men take more than their fair share; and greedy buggers take double that. Caterers does this because it’s easier and cheaper for them than individual plates.

Your main sounds delicious. And if I were veggie I’d rather have the vegan tarte (although not sure how they’d make the pastry without butter). All the mains sound yummy.

Also agree that choc fudge cake wouldn’t be my choice but it’s a wedding cake, so if it makes you happy I’d certainly eat at least some. If it comes with berries I’d probably eat all of those with a bit of cake, than the other way round.

Congrats and have fun at your wedding!

dicksplash · 08/08/2020 21:56

Goats cheese is an acquired taste. I'm veggi and don't like it and it is often the only veggi option has goats cheese so I'm stuck. I would go with a different type of tart.

EasilyDelighted · 08/08/2020 22:01

I think you need at least one (for me preferably both) plain, steamed veg rather than two with rich flavourings when your beef sounds rich and also your starter and pudding (they all sound nice). If I had to keep one of your veg choices it would be the green with pesto, I wouldn't eat any with a honey glaze.

2155User · 08/08/2020 22:06

Love everything about from the sharing platter. As PP said someone always takes lots or takes the nice things

Secondly what was also said about a free bar, I think it's an unnecessary expense unless your budget is endless. A not so recent wedding I went to had a brilliant drinks set up where everyone had champagne on arrival, then there was a cocktail bar you could get free cocktails from on arrival whilst the wedding party had pictures taken and there was free wine on the tables but all other drinks guests had to pay for. It felt a good balance

A W

BestIsWest · 08/08/2020 22:06

It al sounds lovely to me. I don’t think you need a free bar personally but it does seem to be a thing now.

Zhampagne · 08/08/2020 22:10

Honey glaze plus pesto plus stew are three very strong flavours which will fight each other. I’d personally go for thyme roasted root veg. I would be incredibly grateful if the vegetables didn’t have pesto due to allergies but I’m sure you would know if you had guests in this position.

Otherwise lovely. Really good hearty food and no chicken 👍🏻 (wedding chicken is always dry and very boring).

InTheWings · 08/08/2020 22:11

That sounds great.

dicksplash there is the vegan tarte tatin with no goat cheese, which sounds fab.

AriettyHomily · 08/08/2020 22:14

I'm ewwww on sharing platters / family style regardless of cv, especially with people you could potentially not know well at a wedding but the rest sounds lovely.

JorisBonson · 08/08/2020 22:16

I'm hungry now.

Great menu OP
