Wedding menu opinions

Big barn wedding. We are deciding on our caterers. How would you feel about this menu:

Canapés

Starter- big sharing platter of houmous, olives, cheeses, breads etc (veggie)

Main- braised blade of beef with shallots and mushrooms OR goats cheese and aubergine rollatini (veggie) - both served with new potatoes, honey glazed root veg, green veg in pesto, salad.

Dessert- our (fudgy chocolate) wedding cake

Evening- wood fired pizzas

Kids can have the menu or there will be a kid friendly option too.

Wines on tables. Waiters will ask if anyone would prefer a drink (free) from the bar. Free bar in the evening.

How would you feel about this as a guest? Any dietary requirements catered for too.

I don't like sharing platters... nothing to do with coronavirus. There are a few things I don't like, but that's not a problem. Apart from pesto veg, I'd have to give that a wide berth.

tabulahrasa · 08/08/2020 23:54

Also like pastry, lol

To be fair, it’s not the dish in your OP, just the cheese... is it not more usually ricotta anyway? Just that without the goatiness would be fine.

Or a pie, pies are good...

ChangeThePassword · 08/08/2020 23:59

although not sure how they’d make the pastry without butter

They'll probably buy jus-roll, like most pastry loving vegans do Wink

I think it's a really good menu, I too would choose the tarte tatin over the goats cheese option.

Usually I'd say lovely.

With covid, I'm not sharing any sharing platter!

Kpo58 · 09/08/2020 00:02

Make sure that you ask all your guests which main course option they would prefer as there are plenty of non vegetarians that won't eat red meat.

InTheWings · 09/08/2020 00:07

It’s a wedding in a barn.
Presumably fun and relaxed.
With the generosity of a free bar what guest is going to turn their nose up because the gin is Bombay Sapphire not Hendricks?

Just ask them to use non-goats cheese in the veg dish, and avoid aubergines and mushrooms in the tarte tatin and surely there will be something for everyone.

I have been making a gorgeous veg tarte tatin for veg friends without thinking it is vegan have I offended them all this time? Should I slap some goats cheese on it next time? Hmm

overwork · 09/08/2020 00:07

@CasuallyMasculine me too! Have particularly noticed it has become worse in the last couple of years. If I wanted to eat a vegan diet I would, I don't appreciate being pushed to do so because places can't be bothered to give two options.

To the original poster, you'll never please everyone but I think your menu sounds delightful Grin

Graphista · 09/08/2020 00:10

Veggie options

Starters - go retro with vol au vents, pate and gourmet toast/crackers, there are loads of yummy veg pates on the market although a good caterer should be more than capable of making their own, as it's a cooler time of year a light and unusual soup would probably go down well

Mains

I would say go with a tart or tartlet or a mini wellington/en croute type deal (but with a light pastry like filo), would work perfectly with roast/winter veggies. Pastry ALWAYS goes down well. Or a vegetarian roast - I personally like a well made nut roast but it doesn't have to be nut.

tabulahrasa · 09/08/2020 00:15

I don’t mind a vegan dish as also the vegetarian one - as long as it’s not got pretend dairy stuff in it.

Vegan cheese can do one tbh, but I don’t care if it’s just actual vegan food.

Catlover77 · 09/08/2020 00:43

The vegan tart option sounds lovely. As a non-cheese eater I would not eat cheese on the starter, pesto (vegan or not) and cheese on the evening pizzas

Dessert is a nice change

sorryforswearing · 09/08/2020 01:28

dicksplash

Goats cheese is an acquired taste. I'm veggi and don't like it and it is often the only veggi option has goats cheese so I'm stuck. I would go with a different type of tart.

I was going to say exactly this. A lot of people don’t like goats cheese. I’ll be having the braised beef though. 😀

sorryforswearing · 09/08/2020 01:32

Coming from a family of vegetarians I would say that they always appreciate something that goes with potatoes and vegetables so that essentially it’s a dinner rather than what my husband calls sloppy food such as stroganoff or pasta dishes.

sorryforswearing · 09/08/2020 01:33

So 10/10 for the tart option.

bookmum08 · 09/08/2020 01:41

I like the sound of the pizza and the cake.
The rest...well not my thing. I don't like formal meals. But.... I probably could politely eat the veggie option.
Drinks though. Wine on the table and a free bar. But what about non alcoholic. Please do more of a variety of orange or apple juice, some cola or lemonade. Boring !! There are loads of lovely juices and different flavours of fizz. I would love to go somewhere once in a while and have an option of something like a lovely ice filled glass of Irn Bru or Cherryade or something. It's so boring to get told "oh we might have some cans of Diet Coke" when asking for non alcoholic drinks.

Julmust · 09/08/2020 01:46

Sounds wonderful

MaggieFS · 09/08/2020 06:53

OP, don't over think it based on the replies here, because you will never please 100% of the people. There's a big difference on the spectrum from what people would choose themselves, to enjoy eating, to being ok eating, to being ambivalent through to absolute dislike. If most of the veggies are close friends, put a couple of options to them and go with the majority.

Honestly, aside from snobs and picky types, the vast majority will be as happy as anything if they are well fed and well watered (wined). Food and drink are important but they are not the point of the celebration.

rottiemum88 · 09/08/2020 07:11

Starter - I won't eat sharing starters, never have. Apart from that it sounds nice.

Main - I'm a meat eater but can't stand mushrooms so that'd be out. Also don't like goat's cheese so out of your veggie options I prefer the sound of the vegan one. Sides all sound fine.

Cake - no issues Grin

Pizza - Nice idea for evening guests, if I ate all the above during the day though I'm not sure I'd manage pizza on top, it's quite a big meal!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 09/08/2020 07:21

Veggie here and hate both goats cheese and mushrooms. Goats cheese smells revolting and puts me off my whole meal and mushrooms are like eating slugs. If they’re big enough, I’ll eat around them.

It drives me mad that veggie options almost always include one of those two. Do people have no imagination?!?

If I knew the vegan choice, I’d definitely go for that.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 09/08/2020 07:22

Meant to add, my mum is the least fussy vegetarian (I’m quite fussy) and even she won’t touch goats cheese.

Morfin · 09/08/2020 07:39

Clotted cream ice cream with the dessert would be a cost effective way of having another dessert with little expensive or hassle. People could have both or just I/C.

The only thing I'd say about the pizzas, is that if your having a free bar, you will need more than you think.

BikeRunSki · 09/08/2020 07:46

I’m veggie, and I can’t goats cheese. Mass catered veggies food seems to be a shut cut to goats cheese. But that’s my personal taste. Love the sounding the vegan veg tarts Tatin though.

VictoriaBun · 09/08/2020 07:50

As a vegetarian family, no one here eats goats cheese. As another poster said its very much an acquired taste.

Jamhandprints · 09/08/2020 07:58

The vegan option sounds way nicer than the goat cheese one, I'd go for that for your veggie guests. :-)

AnnaSW1 · 09/08/2020 07:58

As a veggie I'd say please don't go for the goats cheese option. The vegan one sounds much better. Goats cheese is so hard to stomach if you're not keen.
