IIRC the NZ Gov are claiming that "it must" be from packaging, but I'm suspicious given they won't want to admit that it could've happened in any other way.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 13/08/2020 18:41

My kids went back to school today. I think I’ve been holding my breath since the end of June in case SG did a U-ey.

By half ten I’d taken stuff to the tip, been to the cash point, had a meeting, booked a shower repair and spoke to the bank.

Amazing how much you can achieve with a bit of headspace and not having to listen to the demands of a snack every 4.2 minutes.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 13/08/2020 18:44

Either way, they're fucked though, surely?

If its asymptomatic carriers, you can't detect it and get rid of it. If its food packaging, you can't not import (especially a small country like NZ) and you can't feasibly quarantine & clean every individual item that comes into the country.

Brings you back round to "have to learn to live with it" that seemingly is the forbidden thought in international politics right now.

TheOrchidKiller · 13/08/2020 19:03

Went to NZ about 20 years ago & Customs were paranoid about anything being brought in from abroad. Remember signing forms on the plane stating that we had not worn our walking boots in non-NZ soil for 28 days prior to arrival. A sniffer dog chased DH through the airport because he'd spilt his airplane lunch on his trousers & you were not allowed to bring food through Customs!

I understand why they don't want pests & diseases in their country. But I wonder if the obsession with looking for it on packaging has made them blind to it being there all the time?

Dowser · 13/08/2020 19:04

I cope by telling myself it’s all over and behaving like it actually is.

@TheOrchidKiller
Reminds me of my morbid fascination with border patrol/ customs programmes and what people bring into he country

I’m amazed they let me bring my homeopathic remedy maker into countries abroad.
In my mind it looks like a small bomb, in their minds it probably looks nothing like it.

@Worldgonecrazy

Pondering on New Zealand, 102 days with no cases and it pops up out of nowhere. What if it has actually been there all this time, completely asymptomatically and someone was unfortunate enough to exhibit symptoms. Not an impossible idea given that the most common symptom is feeling completely normal.
Well that's OK because of all the things I've been accused of over the years, complete normality was never on the list Grin

Does this mean that accepting the "new normal" spreads the virus, and calling it the "new abnormal" is protective? Grin
It makes as much sense to me as a single layer of Buff Wink

Welcometothelifeboatparty · 13/08/2020 19:30

Wow! So the health guy in NZ has the legal right to quarantine AND DISINFECT anything and anyone he thinks fit.

Blimey. Well that's hardly scary at all 😳

Welcometothelifeboatparty · 13/08/2020 19:38

And apparently there was initially some pushback from the people affected but now they've agreed it's ok.

I wonder how that's been achieved, and how 'ok' they actually think it is 🤐

TheOrchidKiller · 13/08/2020 19:40

@Dowser I have the same fascination for those Border Force programmes. The Kiwi & Aussie ones are full-on, with interrogation & rows with passengers over why they can't bring in a dozen dead alligators in a zip-lock bag. The UK ones are so tame, just a bloke badly pretending that the 50,000 fags he's walked off the ferry with are for personal consumption, whilst a HM Customs officer in a navy blue sweater just sighs.

Haven't watched day time TV like that for months. There is always someone in the front room these days.

countrygirl99 · 13/08/2020 19:42

I'm waiting for an opportunity to mention the research that suggested some types of face covering might risk spreading the virus more than nothing. Just waiting for a sanctimonious wanker ('scuse my French) to suggest a buff to someone who can't wear a mask.

Ooh, is my tokenism putting me at risk of murdering grannies after all and being an act of sado-masochism rather than masochistic altruism? Grin

I don't actually breathe in the faces of grannies anyway. Wink

BabcockPeggy · 13/08/2020 20:12

Oh God, that's going to be the next thing isn't it - it's not enough to wear a 'face covering', it's going to have to be the right type of face covering.

WouldBeGood · 13/08/2020 20:15

This is all so scary. And mental.

I wonder if this will just put people off coming forward or admitting to symptoms?
Welcometothelifeboatparty · 13/08/2020 20:26

Bloody right it'd put me off!

countrygirl99 · 13/08/2020 20:30

Yep, apparently some fabrics actually break up the droplets so they spread further which rather makes a mockery of the current roolz. I'm just waiting for the right moment to say you don't know what you are talking about. Will still a buff in each car for emergencies.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 13/08/2020 20:30

Same here. Not a chance I'd be getting tested in NZ if they can lock your whole family up as a result.

TheOrchidKiller · 13/08/2020 20:34

I have a contender for world's most ridiculous face-covering.

A couple who ate in DD's restaurant asked for spare napkins to wear as masks in the taxi home because they had forgotten to bring them. DD said they got in the taxi holding catering blue roll over their mouths & noses.
Hmm

NothingIsWrong · 13/08/2020 20:37

Another lovely day out here, we ended up at the Ryedale Folk Museum in North Yorkshire, and it was utterly fabulous. Mostly outside so no masks required except for a few indoors bits, but in general very non dementory. Lovely cuppa in the cafe next door and I bought a load of merino yarn for spinning at one of the craft shops. There is also a tiny chocolate factory there as well :-)

I am feeling much better for a break from work, but somewhat dreading Monday...

TheOrchidKiller · 13/08/2020 20:37

Who has the job of doing all this research?

I need answers to real questions, like how come it's 8.30pm & I still haven't managed to leave the house all day?!

TheOrchidKiller · 13/08/2020 20:39

@NothingIsWrong glad you've had a good day. Monday is ages away yet, stay in the moment.

This is my brothers theory anyway.

He is convinced that he and his family had Covid back in March. Doubt he'd get tested now. He is in the Auckland lockdown zone and a bit pissed off!
