Hi Teal99 do you have any good aubergine recipes?

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 08/08/2020 17:53

Welcome, @TooManyPlatesInMotion! We're a friendly bunch, if a bit easily sidetracked. Have a wander through the previous threads if you fancy it, they are quite reassuring that you aren't losing your mind, I find!

Had a lovely mooch round the woods with extended family and stopped at a little cafe on the way out. Had to remind DH that he'd need a mask to go in and order, while I sat outside with younger DD. He thinks I'm totally overreacting with not wanting to wear a mask as yet he ALWAYS forgets about needing one. He was quite put out when I sent him back to the car to get his from halfway across the car park. I think he's starting to come around to being pissed off about them.

What is the latest news on vaccination, does anyone know? I'm up for getting jabbed if it gets normal life back on track but the talk was about October a couple of months ago and that's getting pretty close now.

Willow2017 · 08/08/2020 17:55

I actually encountered a full on denier in the wild a couple of days ago! Thinks it’s all a world wide conspiracy in order to control us and reset the economy.

I can go one better! I half overheard a conversation in the cafe about how "its 'the Asians/Africans' sending out death to the 1st world redressing the balance of all the coloured people who are/have been dying at the hands of the white man for years! Serves us right"
I shit you not.

TheOrchidKiller · 08/08/2020 17:55

@Pleasedontdothat the temperature checking thing is where I draw the line. I won't go somewhere where they do that unless it's a medical appointment. It's inaccurate in a non-medical setting. Having something pointed at me feels like an invasion of my privacy. (I'm sure if I posted that on AIBU I'd get slaughtered)

DD & her colleagues were doing temperature checks at work on themselves, not customers. They were using a laser thermometer which wasn't calibrated properly and were all coming out with such low temperatures that they should have been dead! There was some debate amongst them about what a normal human body temp should be, & although DD knew the answer & showed them a google search it was decided that it was much lower, to fit with what the thermometer was saying. I think they have dropped this charade now.

wanderings · 08/08/2020 17:56

How about us all demanding a plan for the exit strategy? When Boris threw us the bone about things being allowed back soon, maybe in time for Christmas (and then said "actually, we must squeeeeeeeeeeeeeze the brakes, and for good measure, I'll cancel Eid"), he thinks we've forgotten that we are still nowhere near normal. This is something for us to make noise about soon after the schools go back. Now is not a good time, because nobody in government wants to rock the boat before the schools go back, and they'll simply reply to that effect, but I think we need to show that this "permanent limbo" we are in simply cannot go on.

What we want is reassurance that restrictions will be lifted when the infection rates are low enough. So far, the clown and his merry men have said nothing about this; with their frequent use of the phrase "new normal", this implies permanence. We want reassurance that when the infection rates are low enough, the massive infringements on our liberties will be lifted. Boris has not given us any reassurance whatsoever that this will happen. In particular, we want his word that:

  • Mask wearing will become optional.
  • A vaccine will not be made compulsory.
  • No restrictions on where we may go.
  • All businesses will be allowed to reopen.
  • Coronavirus laws will be reversed.

Perhaps we need a co-ordinated effort, of most of us writing to our MPs at the same time, so that the clowns see that some members of the public are very concerned about this, and they keep hoping we've forgotten this very fundamental thing.

By the way, were there any stories about people in the north of England ignoring the restrictions, and celebrating Eid anyway? I didn't really see any.

loulouljh · 08/08/2020 17:57

We are going to an open air cinema tomorrow. Open air. Get the "joining instructions" and we are to have our temperatures checked on arrival! No mention of this when I booked and I would not have done had I known.

I have called the venue. It is of course being done in the interests of keeping people "safe". The venue has agreed that we do not need to have our temperatures taken but we won't be able to use the loos...

If it were not for the fact the kids are SO looking forward to it we would not be going. Madness.

bakingcupcakes · 08/08/2020 17:59

I'm not a covid denier but I think this is starting to become a massive over-reaction that will be looked back on and deemed not worth it in the long run. I'm also very frightened that we'll get a worse pandemic as judging by how this has been handled we're all screwed.

I've bought DS a mask (wtf has happened to me) because an activity he wants to do on holiday requires him to wear one. He's very keen on the idea of a mask in general. Me not so much because he fiddles.

Loving all the gardening chat. I've had several cucumbers off a plant I bought from the local veg shop in lockdown. They've been great. And we've been eating carrots and green beans grown from seed for ages. My strawberry plants have done really well too. I nearly bought raspberry plant just before lockdown. I didn't and really regret it now.

Great to see new joiners.

Teal99 · 08/08/2020 17:59

I have abided by everything so far, but the mask thing has curtailed my movements to a supermarket dash once a week, the rest of the time I walk in woods etc, no browsing around towns. I worry what is next, anywhere outside your front door you have to wear a mask? That is when I will rebel. I live in a flat, no outside space so if they introduced that I just won't comply.

Wearing a mask was my nightmare scenario, and I was waiting for it during lockdown. Did not expect them to instruct us to wear them 4 months later....I was dealing with lockdown okay. It is only in the last few weeks my mental health has declined. I don't normally have mental health issues but I have been feeling really low and lethargic last few weeks. I think they will be making us wear them for a very long time. Plus introduce more draconian measures.

The worse thing about this time is that for short period we were all in it together. Now this is another divisive thing to add to a list along with leave/remain, Tory/labour.

Teal99 · 08/08/2020 18:02

@countrygirl99 Sorry, no aubergine recipes. Not a fan!

Willow2017 · 08/08/2020 18:04

When I queried why they were doing this (it’s against government guidelines/the staff aren’t medically trained/what are they going to do with the data/it’s a useless way of finding asymptomatic/presymptomatic carriers who would surely be more of a worry in a restaurant than people who definitely felt ill), I got shouted down because if doing x is ‘safe’ then doing x and y, and probably z too must be even safer

They could feck right off with that. It only tell you your temp at that point in time. If you have been out in the sun for a while before going in your temp will be higher. How do they iknow your normal temp anyway? I would be questioning their medical training in deciding what was an abnormal temp for each customer. Its ridiculous and against guidelines so they have no right to do it. Its a personal intrusion. I would be asking them to quote verbatum any laws that says you have to have your temp taken before you enter any building.

TheOrchidKiller · 08/08/2020 18:04

@SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito

I'm in the Oxford vaccine trial. News a couple of weeks ago is that it's "looking promising". Can't remember what that means in real terms but I think they published early findings in The Lancet.

Going back next month. They are looking into working out the most effective doses, so they are getting close.

Thisdressneedspockets · 08/08/2020 18:08

Not a covid denier. I know of two people who were in none of the at risk categories plus about 3 or 4 who were who have died..
One in particular sent shockwaves through all of us.

However I found all the telling each other to stay indoors, combined with made up rules about parks and overzealous policing in some areas too much. I also feel people should never have been ordered not to see their partners who didn't live with them. ( I'm not in this category).

I feel it was a big mistake to not encourage people more to get fresh air, sunshine and exercise. I don't think was the govts intention, but I think we as a society somehow adopted the most draconian translation of the rules and they never bothered to clarify.

I was convinced that masks were the way forward in the early weeks but don't understand the justification for them in places where it's easy enough to give people a bit more space. Especially as they tend to be used incorrectly.
I find they raise my anxiety levels and I get disorientated. I also find it uncomfortable to see people in masks and have started to have nightmares about it. I'm dreading winter and the darker nights for this reason. Multi storey carparks can be bad enough on your own as it is. I'm trying to get a balance between avoiding places where I don't feel the benefit of going outweighs the discomfort of wearing a mask, and not missing out completely.

I'm trying to live life as well as I can. I'm glad that I now have access again to the healthy coping mechanisms I've developed through life. Mainly getting out into nature and enjoying time with friends. I'm scared of having these coping mechanisms taken away again, especially as my mental health isn't now what it was before lockdown.

ACautionaryTale · 08/08/2020 18:09

Re the temp thing

I’ve had covid - cough, loss of sense and smell - confirmed by a test

Only had a temp for 24 hours after coughing for almost a week (thought it was just a chronic problem I live with for a few days) - loss of taste and smell occurred on day 5 which is what prompted the test

Given I was coughing my lungs up for five days telling. Everyone it’s not covid just a condition I have, and as far as I know no one caught it - not my 76 year old mother who had just been released from hospital with sepsis and was why I was looking after he - nor my 76 year old uncle with heart valve surgery and insulin diabetic nor my mother’s neighbour who was supposed to shield

Non of the carers who came in twice a day caught it off me despite not wearing Ppe

This was start of May

I do wonder how infectious this actually is - it’s either not as infectious as they make out or very very infectious but a lot less symptomatic than they make out

ACautionaryTale · 08/08/2020 18:10

I digressed - temp is a very very bad thing to rely on. I’d have passed all scans for the first 7 days of my infection

Willow2017 · 08/08/2020 18:11

BTW I was at a hospital appointment this week and they didnt check my temp. No drama not fuss just calm and business as usual. Damm sure some random cafe/restaurant person isnt doing it.

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 08/08/2020 18:11

I'm not a Covid denier, I've complied with the rules of lockdown, I socially distance, I wear a mask when required. However, from the beginning of lockdown I thought that there's a significant risk that we will look back on our response to the virus in years to come and establish that the cost of lockdown (social, economic, in relation to both physical and psychological health) far exceeded any benefit it had. I have been extremely careful about having conversations with people about that as I am utterly sick of getting shouted down, told I don't care about the vulnerable, told I put "profit before people".

Not the case. It is because I do care about such things that I question the government's approach. Children and young people are also vulnerable - what od the millions of them denied access to formal education and socialising with peers? Those suffering from other illnesses, including mental illnesses, who have been denied routine treatment, what of them? Yet there seems to be a climate where it is not legitimate to ask these things, but it is legitimate to shout abuse at someone for not wearing a mask, to judge people without any knowledge of their circumstances when you see them doing everyday things.

I could rant on... Blush

So, I am v pleased to have found this thread!

Ibake · 08/08/2020 18:14

Y'know @Teal99 we're a pretty inclusive bunch on here and support a wide variety of views but I'm not sure how we feel about a non aubergine fan joining our ranks. What do we think AD's? Shall we let her in or is that a step too far?!

BogRollBOGOF · 08/08/2020 18:16

@TooManyPlatesInMotion

Oh, great thread. Can I join?

I have seen these threads before but simply not understood the titles. Had no clue what was meant by "AD". Thought it might have been referring to anti-depressants. Confused

Anyway, get it now. Fabulous.

We're trying our best to be anti-depressed too. Some weeks it's a bit of a battle Grin

A fortnight after last going to the supermarket, the fridge is now empty enough for the need to eat good food to override my reluctance to go and buy it.
Judging by the sounds of people in their gardens and wafts of BBQ smoke, I don't think the queues will be too long on a sweltering Saturday evening. Wink

Noooooo I hate aubergines. Might have to start the AAD club Grin
Willow2017 · 08/08/2020 18:17

The thing is you can have a temp for a variety of things. As proven by many Drs who have had the guts to come out and say people are dying due to fear of going to A&E and every healthcare setting claiming a temp is due to covid.
Lots of life threatening illnesses have a temp yet these people are denied healthcare because they have a temp because only covid apparently gives you a temperature!

Thisdressneedspockets · 08/08/2020 18:17

@wanderings
On the Eid front, people did very well to follow the instructions to not meet to celebrate Eid. As the legislation to back it up didn't come into place until 4 or 5 days later, it would have been legal to do so.

Ibake · 08/08/2020 18:18

Lol! Actually iirc I think it's actually something to do with a penis emoji from a few threads back and then, of course, we went off on a recipe tangent.

Teal99 · 08/08/2020 18:23

I am not keen on penises either @Ibake 🍆

Anti dementors. Earlier in lockdown someone (don't know who) started referring to some of the more extreme posters on the covid threads (the cheese in coffee, don't sit on a park bench, how dare you go out for 1 hour and 5 min walk, types) as dementors after the creatures in Harry Potter that feed on fear and misery. These threads are supposed to the antidote to these. As tory says I think most of us are covid central, it's bad but not end of days
