Elle DeGeneres - the backlash

They say James Corden is the favourite to step in to her shoes. I always liked her if I ever caught the show. The A listers seemed to want to be on the show and now there seems to be a backlash. I remember the DV rumours on here. If its all behind the scenes with the staff how much power did she have over their behaviours, what if she never even knew? It seems a shame when she went through all that after coming out publicly and how no one in tv would touch her. Its sad really.

I never watch Ellen but see clips occasionally on Facebook etc. I always thought she was funny until I saw the gift table clip, that poor woman! And they could have easily made a point with that without showing the woman’s face or accosting her in the audience, and you just know that she wasn’t the only person to take more than one item. After that there was a spate of guests coming back at her (Katy Perry reminding her she attended her wedding to Russel Brand when Ellen claimed she had no idea she had been married before, Dakota Johnson) and i did start to wonder about what she was really like.

RunningFromInsanity · 06/08/2020 11:12

The Mariah Carey one, using champagne to confirm if she was pregnant was uncomfortable to watch and made worse by the fact that Mariah had a miscarriage a few weeks later. She shouldn’t have been forced to reveal her pregnancy.

@PrincessHoneysuckle

Always thought she was disingenuous.Shes dead behind the eyes.
This although some times I think she has maniacal eyes

EDG got all behind Greta then kept flying people over from around the world who her researchers would have found on youtube to be on her show.

My favourite GN guests were June Brown (Dot cotton in Eastenders) and Lady Gaga, they genuinely seemed to hit it off GN May as well have not been there Grin

Others have mentioned Graham Northon and Jonathan Ross as their favourite hosts - the one I most have time for now is Russell Howard. His interview with Rob Delaney was sensitive and he proved himself able to simply listen. His interview with John Oliver was hilarious.
I don't care much for Ellen but cancel culture is irksome. Surprised that James Corden is deemed a good replacement.
His AMA was tough love to say the least. He admits to having been pulled up for being a cock back in the day and his recent Bafta acceptance was low key. There was talk of upset amongst his writers too although he has taken a pay cut for staff to be furloughed according to a recent thread on here. I recall him being pranked by Ant and Dec though and you could see he was this close to screaming Don't you know who I am? at one point.

blurpityblurp · 06/08/2020 11:43

This has nothing to do with “cancel culture.” It’s extremely worrying that abuse victims aren’t allowed to speak out without people screeching “CANCEL CULTURE!!”

I’m not sure if Cordon is in the running to replace her, that might be a fake rumour. It sounds unlikely given various factors. But who knows.

EachandEveryone · 06/08/2020 11:48

I’ve just read an article and it says Ellen never featured in their complaints. Just what was going on in the office. So, what does it all mean is it HR at fault?

OP posts:
blurpityblurp · 06/08/2020 11:58

Lots of the complaints have been about Ellen personally and have accused her of engaging in direct bullying. Possibly the article is differentiating between the complaints that people have made publicly (such as her head writer and former close friend revealing she was fired) and the smaller number of formal legal complaints?

beguilingeyes · 06/08/2020 11:59

The James Corden thing makes me sad. I've heard that he's a massive jerk but Gavin and Stacey is one of my favourite things ever. I love it so much.

Love Graham Norton. He is so funny and he always makes his guests laugh which seem to make them relax and interact with each other. I find all other chat shows boring. I watched Ellen a couple of times when guests I liked were on. I think she's a megalomaniac and cannot hide it. I used to like her sitcom though but that was obvs years ago before all the power went to her head.

Me too.
Ain't going to lie to you - I luff Smithy, I do.

Tappering · 06/08/2020 13:22

There was a blind article some time back on Foxella, which alleged that Portia did want kids. EDG apparently insisted that P deny this publicly on her show (which she did).

hopeishere · 06/08/2020 13:26

@Jilljams

I watched an episode where she went to a supermarket with Michelle Obama. Obama came off as really lovely but Ellen was weird and rude.
I saw that one and it was totally cringe making. Michelle Obama seemed mortified.
BitOfFun · 06/08/2020 13:35

I've read a little bit about this, and it seems to be senior members of the production team who are bullying other staff, not Ellen.

amusedbush · 06/08/2020 13:47

I’ve been hearing rumours for years that Ellen is awful to work for, a real nasty bully.

I agree with others that she’s creepy. Her eyes are dead and even when she’s smiling she looks like she wants to slash your tyres.

I also hate that she totally takes the piss out of her guests. Of course her adoring audience laughs along with her ‘banter’ but she can be really belittling.

OP posts:
blurpityblurp · 06/08/2020 13:57

I hope the rumours about her marriage are not true, but I slightly side-eye the rumours about Portia wanting and being denied a baby. I just don't see how anyone except for maybe Portia's close friends could possibly know that, and I doubt they're spilling to BI gossip websites. (Those websites honestly act like they somehow psychically know everything any celeb thinks, know the deepest darkest secrets that no one but the celeb knows, and they expect people to buy it!!)

It feels like it plays into homophobic and sexist tropes. Portia is more stereotypically femme, so people assume she must as a woman want children. Ellen is slightly more butch-presenting, so people assume that she's the one pushing for no kids, because butch lesbians often have their womanhood denied. It's perfectly possible that Portia does not want kids, or that she's the main one who's against kids.

CallarMorvern · 06/08/2020 14:34

DD shows me lots of EDG clips, but I have felt a bit uncomfortable about them, especially the supermarket one with Michelle Obama, EDG seemed so entitled (and manic).
I love Graham Norton, he's just so relaxed and hence his guests are relaxed too. Favourite episode has to be June Brown and Lady Gaga. I always love him interviewing
Olivia Colman.

Andylion · 06/08/2020 21:10

I used to like her sitcom though but that was obvs years ago before all the power went to her head.

I used to like her sitcom too, until she came out, then it was just not funny. I stuck with it because I was pissed off that sponsors were dropping her show because she had come out.

I remember seeing a clip of her early stand up and was impressed that she was funny but kind. Regarding the gift table incident, I assume that was on an episode, so the whole audience, including those at home, saw it? Really an asshole move,

Andthewinnerislucky · 06/08/2020 23:38

I enjoyed some of Ellen's shows and thought she was quite funny sometimes (though not as a standup comedian). I honestly liked her. I stopped watching when the show got a bit too gamey, pranks, no substance. Just felt like there wasn't anything left for them to do. I also started noticing Ellen's eyes becoming so tired, empty, like she was holding in something/hiding depression/apathy/drug habit or something. I just felt they lost their spark completely (Ellen's eyes sparkled before, to me) and she was struggling to be there because perhaps she doesn't want to give it up or something.

Something about her demeanour changed, even her appearance. Although I think she's an introvert or ambivert, her usual bubbly, enthusiastic manner of interview dimmed and I felt the laughter became a bit forced, like it took too much effort or energy from her. I chalked it up to her being done with the show.

I was always put off by all the gushing celebs on her show and the 'look at me I'm doing good things for people' attitude. The last straw was her birthday last year or 2 years ago (omg! Ellen needed everyone to come and talk about how they were invited, who was there, how awesome it was...it was just too much. "Oh look, my "hot wife Portia" has come to tell you that she bought a charity something something in Africa or so for Elephants or so in my name because she knows I'm such a bleeding heart, caring soul and want nothing else in the world").

I don't follow her or celebs in general and this is news to me, although not entirely surprising.

And in a stunning development, her own brother has come out in her defence

Not that stunning really, is it?

Quirrelsotherface · 07/08/2020 18:45

The woman was asked for an explanation and said "I took one for my sister who couldn't come today". Ellen looked like a psychopathic kitten and said with patronising sweetness,"Well you know a lot of people have sisters who couldn't be here today..(more drawn out moralising)...learn to be a better person."

Jeez I just found this on YouTube, she is seriously creepy there, you can see how hopping mad she is and oddly enjoying it at the same time! Nasty
