The safeguarding thing is shocking. but I'm not surprised.

My mother works in a related childcare profession to social work. After years of LAs crying for extra funding for social work it now apparently doesn't matter. Cos covid. So she (not a social worker) is making phone calls to the (daily growing) list of 700 families with various orders, concerns etc. Because a phone call is now totally ok, face to face apparently not needed now. Cos covid.

It's a shit show.

FluffyKittensinabasket · 03/08/2020 20:39

I’m looking forward to the inevitable posts in a year’s time or so.

“I haven’t left the house for 12 months AIBU?”

“I’m refusing to go back into the office after working from home for 18 months, can they sack me?”

TheOrchidKiller · 03/08/2020 20:44

@DrearyWallAntler Thank you for explaining about all things drainage. I do find it fascinating actually! As a child I read a local history book about the town I grew up in, & learnt about how they traced a cholera outbreak to one water pump. I wonder what those Victorians would make of all this?

FluffyKittensinabasket · 03/08/2020 20:44

I’ve been reusing my disposable face masks. They get hung up in the sun!

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 03/08/2020 20:45

I can’t begin to imagine what sort of a person sells their own children.

WRT poo-testing, I’ve just sent mine off in a Tupperware box to Queen Nicola to stay safe. Be alert wee nippy! Postman’s here!

TheOrchidKiller · 03/08/2020 20:46

@InsaneInTheViralMembrane is that for a health screen or a dirty protest?Grin

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 03/08/2020 20:48

@TheOrchidKiller it’s in the name of the 2nd wave. I’m just doing my bit. Wearing a mask. Social distancing. Shitting in a sandwich box and sending it 2nd class.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 03/08/2020 20:52

@DrearyWallAntler I actually found the sewerage post fascinating! Maybe we should have a party - an illegal AD rave bit instead of an actual rave we sit in the woods and you explain sewers to us. Grin

I have one disposable mask in the car. DH and I share it. Must have been used half a dozen times already. I'll change it once it starts looking grubby... Or talking back to me.

TheOrchidKiller · 03/08/2020 20:55

@InsaneInTheViralMembrane that's your cover story. Wink

I'm doing a covid vaccine trial. I had to sign a consent form to say I was happy to let them have a special sample if I test positive. So far I've only had to take weekly throat & nose swabs to the post box marked, "WARNING! BIOHAZARD!" all over the box. Assembling the box is harder than doing the swab.

Extended face covering list is out:

For members of the public, from 8 August the places where you will have to wear a face covering will be expanded to include:

funeral directors
premises providing professional, legal or financial services
cinemas
theatres
bingo halls
concert halls
museums, galleries, aquariums, indoor zoos or visitor farms, or other indoor tourist, heritage or cultural sites.
nail, beauty, hair salons and barbers - other than where necessary to remove for treatments
massage parlours
public areas in hotels and hostels
place of worship
libraries and public reading rooms
community centres
social clubs
tattoo and piercing parlours
indoor entertainment venues (amusement arcades, funfairs, adventure activities e.g. laser quest, go-karting, escape rooms, heritage sites etc)
storage and distribution facilities
veterinary services.
auction houses

So can't take the kids anywhere, can no longer get my hair done... we're back to March just now it's a shit painted a pretty colour to hide it.

DrearyWallAntler · 03/08/2020 20:57

@TheOrchidKiller

I maintain the Victorians would have been appalled (in their best 'letters to the editor' style) at the shutting of schools.

If you look at the conditions (and communicable diseases) around when the Victorians set up free schooling they make covid look like a mild sniffle.

TheOrchidKiller · 03/08/2020 20:57

You've all just reminded me that I've got the mask I wore to do the shopping still in my jeans pocket. And that I need to get up to put a wash on!

Bloody hell. Glad we’re on our trip away this week and not next.

She is apparently too busy crying because peopke we t to pubs and got drunk and didn't SD.
Aww bless! -wtf did she think would happen in some places?--
ISaySteadyOn · 03/08/2020 21:02

@DominaShantotto, same boat for me. I loathe these regulations.

DrearyWallAntler · 03/08/2020 21:03

@SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito

There is a sort of pivotal drainage legal case from 1878 which is Glossop v Heston and Isleworth. I'm which the complainant suffered his house flooding from what is described as 'maloderous and deleterious matter.'

Which is frankly the best description of 'shit' ever.

I sort of get the giggles thinking of a judge in full Victorian wig and gown looking over some half specs and droning it in a very serious manner....

DominaShantotto · 03/08/2020 21:05

Hairdresser's already messaged me to say they know I have exemption reasons (was talking about it when I was in there this weekend) so don't worry! Phew!

I really should go back to frumpy as fuck no maintenance hairstyle right now with lockdown and these rules but seriously - it's the one thing I splash out on on myself once a month.

Thats taking the p. Outdoors????😲 The gov have gone even madder than previously. People must say enough is enough now surely?
PinkFondantFancy · 03/08/2020 21:10

@DrearyWallAntler I love it when your normally very niche topic becomes of national interest and people are actually keen to hear about it Grin I had the same earlier in lockdown when I telling anyone who would listen about the death rate compared to a normal winter etc. I prefer your sewer chat though.

@InsaneInTheViralMembrane I am chuckling away about your poo in a box Grin

@FeelsLikeGroundhogDay no need to lurk, come join us! I've been saying the same about children for whom home is anything but safe. Noone wants to hear it.

HeIenaDove · 03/08/2020 21:12

@DominaShantotto Looks like i will continue to grow out my grey then. Can barely cope with wearing a mask round Tesco for half an hour. I reckon Brave the Shave for Macmillan may have an uptick in women doing it this year.

Re funeral directors So someone who has lost someone close to them is going to be crying their eyes out behind a mask while getting all snotty behind the mask and the bloody thing riding up into their eyes. UK Government obviously think bereavement isnt hard enough!!

Would at this point like to thank Woman and Home magazine who ran a "How to go grey gracefully" article last month. Found it helpful and has made it a bit easier to accept.

ISaySteadyOn · 03/08/2020 21:16

I haven't been to a hairdresser in years. Have been too embarrassed for varying reasons. Won't be going now.

And, Domina, you are spot on about it just being March again.

SpnBaby1967 · 03/08/2020 21:17

The police are so short staffed & weirdly nervous about removing the children from a deaf drunk who is shielding. They've tried to get the 15 year old in to the police station with the social worker as escort but mum wont allow it & has cancelled all the appts made for her to join them at the last minute.

It really is frustrating because the police and courts almost seem scared to drop the hammer during a pandemic. I've dealt with worse cases than this and they've acted quickly and decisively before all this corona shit show put the fear of god in everyone.

DominaShantotto · 03/08/2020 21:18

I was about a week away from ordering clippers and doing a lockdown buzz cut before they reopened hairdressers.

DrearyWallAntler · 03/08/2020 21:20

@PinkFondantFancy

Grin I know, my mum rang me to ask about it. She has never shown any interest beyond polite bafflement at my job/niche before.

Before I changed job I was involved with a fairly blue sky session with a water authority about the use of AI in sewer modelling. It's entirely possible in the near future that the data collected from the sewer system could be used to predict disease outbreaks.....if you have data you can learn from it.

(The whole testing sewage for disease has been around for ages)

DominaShantotto · 03/08/2020 21:22

I'm just waiting till they announce they're going to give one of their mates a huge contract to fuck up trying to track and trace a turd.
