Let me start by saying I’m in Scotland so this isn’t about masks per se, but about the whole silly dance we are being made to do in order to go about our lives at the moment.

I went to a shopping centre today and won't be back.

It’s the first time I’ve worn a mask for any longer than a quick run into the local coop. I was probably in the centre for an hour and a half but there was sweat pouring down my neck. I felt suffocated and silenced. Hated it.

My baby looked at me like I was a monster and my toddler couldn’t hear me when I talked.

But it wasn’t just masks that were the issue. There was a ludicrous one way system, which makes absolutely no sense to me if we are wearing masks and social distancing. Then every shop had a makeshift entry and exit and their own one way system which no one was observing.

At every turn I was being monitored by security guards, eyeballing me in anticipation of a wrongdoing, ready to pounce.

Almost every shop had a guard on duty forcing you to rub gel on your hands and that of my child before entering.

There were queues everywhere. All but one set of toilets shut, so queue for that too, and toilets themselves as dirty as ever because so many people using the same ones and no cleaning.

Inexplicably in most shops all but one set of tills were shut, again forcing people to congregate in long queues.

All the restaurants were again inexplicably closed apart from, yep, McDonalds and Costa. Both under small enclaves at the back of the centre. But in them you are allowed to take your mask off and eat off a table more or less. But in the main, high roofed wide open walkways of the centre, the mask must go back on.

The shops had little stock.

When I dared approach an M&S assistant to ask for a size (with a visor on like all the rest of the assistants at an angle that perfectly channels their exhalations directly at the person they’re talking too) I was barked at as if I was a naughty schoolgirl to the extent that I put the item back on the rack and walked out without buying anything.

Does anyone else think this is all utterly ludicrous?

Shops will not survive this.

We are all adults with our own minds and perfectly able to manage our selves. Why make masks mandatory if we then have to do all this makeshift posturing to appear to be avoiding each other when really we are being herded closer together.

As someone who you might consider a “hobby shopper” as in it’s one of my pastimes (and I’m not interested in any opinions about having a better hobby, if there weren’t millions like me there wouldn’t be any shops at all). I’m someone who will browse and buy, will pick up bits I don’t really need but just want. I will spend my money happily- if the experience gives me pleasure.

But now I think it’s going to be online for me. I won’t be back at the shopping centre. I won’t be visiting our city centre either as it’s just the same.

To be fair I think that many businesses are struggling with being 'covid secure' and it's relevant that if they are deemed not to be then that has implications on their ability to trade at all

This is very true. I used to prepare snack for small children at playgroup (pancakes with butter, cut up fruit) and the hoops we had to do in terms of food hygiene were ridiculous. The health and safety inspector agreed that asking us to soak plastic Ikea cutlery and plates overnight in Milton was probably OTT but "you can't be too careful".

The Covid Pandemic has taken "you can't be too careful" to the extremes. Shops are desperate to encourage shoppers back. They are desperate to show that they are doing absolutely everything possible to keep people "safe". They don't want to be the brand shamed on social media for not enforcing social distancing in their stores or something less minor.

It's a balance though - all these extra measures designed to keep people "safe" have an impact on the shopping experience. Fewer customers, fewer sales, less profit. Increased costs for all of this extra PPE for staff and cleaning. If retail sees footfall decline and sales drop then the balance will swing the other way in favour of relaxing the more stringent/silly rules like having to make an appointment to drop off donations at a charity shop, or having to quarantine shoes after you've tried them on.

The most important measures are keeping your distance from other people, and washing your hands.

It's like living in a nazi controlled state at the moment.Horrible.

VicSynix · 25/07/2020 13:44

We are also in a low risk area, very few cases, very few death.. I just read this following post on FB from someone who runs a small farmshop (and has been doing so throughout). Maybe worth reading and thinking a bit about what she's saying before stamping your feet and saying 'but no-one here has it! what's the point!!'

'Funny old day yesterday with the introduction of Face Masks.
The staff feel very uncomfortable telling customers to make sure and wear a mask in the shop and cafe. But they have to so please do not be offended if they tell you to wear one. If you don't have one we can give you one for a donation to charity.

I must admit I do feel a bit uncomfortable with the idea of everyone wearing masks up here. We are a nice safe space But are we?
Every day we have dozens of people visiting us. They do come from all over.
I know that now we are open up to guests staying here I can't control where they have been.
But what I do know is that I can ask people to wear masks around my staff as well as me when they do come into one of our indoor spaces.
I know that myself and my small team can not afford to get ill. That is the case with all my fellow small shops and cafe owners out there. We have all struggled to get through the past months and wouldn't it be horrendous to end up now ill because someone didn't wear a mask.
And i bet there are a few other business owners out there that shouldn't even be exposing themselves to customers at all. The ones like me who are on the vulnerable list, but who can't afford to stop working otherwise there will be no money to pay the bills. We don't have the privilege of staying away from people when people are what pay your way through the days.
Now we are all opening up again we can not afford to let the virus spread again. The country needs us to all stay healthy to get this economy back up and running again.
SO BE KIND AND WEAR A MASK'

I imagine if they were it would please certain people.

I mean, after all social cleansing was for the greater good apparently, wasnt it?

I call Godwin's Law Grin

bigknickersbigknockers · 25/07/2020 14:01

Well some shop staff are behaving like dictators and enjoying this whole shit show a little bit more than they should that's for sure.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 25/07/2020 14:03

We may not be rounded up and shot but our joy in life is being killed of so we will be going about our business like zombies our communication abilities will diminish and anyone who does not follow instructions will be told off.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 25/07/2020 14:04

And yes all the wannabe dictators are loving it!

m0therofdragons · 25/07/2020 14:05

I’ve not returned to Morrison’s after getting shouted at for queuing in the wrong place. Apparently it had been the same for a month. The fact I’d not been there so didn’t know and thought I was following the floor stickers was irrelevant. The way I was spoken to as an adult was truly unkind and after a full day working in the hospital I was close to tears and just wanted to leave.

Our M&S is lovely so I’ve ended up shopping there when I can’t get stuff online but it’s expensive!

Toddlerteaplease · 25/07/2020 14:07

My home town isn't too bad. Fairly relaxed and normal. I'm on holiday down south and omg the difference is incredible and the people are so rude.

Longwhiskers14 · 25/07/2020 14:07

I cannot believe some people are actually equating being told to wear a mask while out shopping with the Holocaust. WTAF.

Bollss · 25/07/2020 14:09

@Longwhiskers14

I'm not. I'm comparing the reaction of your average person. Blind compliance. Willingness to accept it for the greater good.
confuseddotcom12 · 25/07/2020 14:09

100% agree the joy has completed been sucked out of everything. I love to browse around home shops or do a bit clothes shopping at the weekend but I popped to b&q this morning and I had to leave the shop and wait in the car for DP as I couldn't stand the mask I was sweating and not able to breathe normally. I feel like I'm going to be a recluse from now. I'm feeling quite pissed off about it all now. No way are shops going to survive this. It's just a fucking massive chore going anywhere now.

confuseddotcom12 · 25/07/2020 14:11

@LizzieBennett70

I was just chatting to DD about popping into a retail park tomorrow, then remembered I'd have to be muzzled to do so.

Will be staying out of shops for the indefinite future, and I've had enough of shopping online and lost parcels to see this year out too.

It honestly is like a muzzle.
GrumpiestOldWoman · 25/07/2020 14:12

anyone who does not follow instructions will be told off.

Oh yeah, exactly like the holocaust then Hmm

Ilovegreentomatoes · 25/07/2020 14:13

Did I even mention the holocaust?

SockYarn · 25/07/2020 14:14

Saying it's like the holocaust is obviously a massive exaggeration.

But on the other hand, pretending the shopping experience now is lovely and relaxing and pleasurable is not true either.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 25/07/2020 14:15

A nazi run state can also be equated to a dictatorship which at the moment I feel we are.

Longwhiskers14 · 25/07/2020 14:16

@Ilovegreentomatoes

Did I even mention the holocaust?
What do you think living in a Nazi-controlled state equates to? Which is what you definitely did say.
Longwhiskers14 · 25/07/2020 14:17

@Ilovegreentomatoes

A nazi run state can also be equated to a dictatorship which at the moment I feel we are.
Please stop. You're making yourself sound really ignorant and I don't believe you are.
GrumpiestOldWoman · 25/07/2020 14:19

Of course an analogy to a nazi controlled state means holocaust. How did nazi controlled Poland go again?

I think its fine to moan about shopping not being as much fun as before, we're all sad about the things we've lost during the pandemic, whether it's people, experiences or normal routines - it is all a bit shit. But we need to keep things in perspective.

Aaaarrgghh · 25/07/2020 14:26

I've stuck it all out until a few days ago. I got told off for not having a mask on whilst trying to smell a perfume I was testing. Pretty much finished any joy I had left in the retail experience.

Spanielmadness · 25/07/2020 14:27

I was at motorway services yesterday.
Masks on, hand sanitiser every few paces, one way systems, warnings about corona.......... the tiny gambling area had people close together tap, tap, tapping all over the buttons and screens on the machines with their hands....... you can’t let it bug you or you’ll go mad - I just smiled to myself at the absurdity of it all.
