i got excited when i bought a hoover

When I went out of my way to speak to an older friend whose husband had died. I was in my mid 20's.

Still waiting

The sun was out and I thought 'let's put more washing on'

When I got a house in suburbia and settled down.

When I had no money for food and sorted it out without relying on my parents.

When I had to decide whether or not to send my dd, on immunosuppressants, to school during the pandemic.

When we buried ds2. Born and died at 27 weeks. I grew up because a little bit of me died too.

The friend I used to go drinking shit wine with came for dinner and we both enjoyed an outraged chat about council tax rises over coffee.

My step kids asked me if they could go and play outside before dinner. Like I was a grown up

My biggest dream in life was a utility room

When I had matching cutlery (including cake forks, salad servers and sundae spoons) x

Instead of trying to use tape to fix my broken microwave handle, I ordered an official replacement part.

When I learnt how to say no

When I had to sign paperwork for my dd to go into theatre. It was an odd moment where I realised I truly was an adult because I couldn't get somebody else to do it for me.

I told my Mum she was using the wrong type of baking tray to make flapjacks.

When I was on my own one wet Sunday night and the cat had a stroke on the bedroom floor and needed to be taken to the vets to be put down and I also had my 3 year old dd with me. I took dd to a neighbour’s and stayed with the cat while she was being put down.

I felt horribly grown up.

When I no longer wanted to get up early on Christmas morning!

I chose the pasta shape to match the sauce... 🙈

When I realised I liked Joules clothes

When I treated myself to a cordless hoover for my birthday.

Also when I arranged my Dad's funeral & didn't get bullied in to anything he wouldn't have wanted. I was in a daze on the day but when I think back to the bits I do remember I know it's just how he wanted it.

I still feel as though I'm playing at being grown up. I'm probably closer to having grandchildren than the birth of my youngest.
