Did you have a weekly comic as a child?

I graduated to Whizzer and Chips from Twinkle The Comic for Little Girls. My sister had the Topper. We were unimpressed with Bunty, Judy and the like so then moved on to Jackie and Blue Jeans.

Oh and Smash Hits st some point for the lyrics

WellTidy · 18/07/2020 21:18

I practically lived for my comic. Delivered from the local newsagent. In this order:

Twinkle
The Brownie
Look In
Blue jeans
Jackie
Girl
Smash hits
Just seventeen
More (slightly reaching to call this a comic, I know)

Craiglang · 18/07/2020 21:20

I went from Twinkle to the Beano to Smash Hits to teen mags names of which escape me now. Bliss maybe?

I also got loads of Beano/Dandy/Topper etc annuals. My mum used to buy them for me at antique fairs so I had them from the 1960s onwards. I've still got them and I'm quite attached to them really.

LightDrizzle · 18/07/2020 21:20

I was a spoiled bastard and had The Beano AND The Dandy!

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 18/07/2020 21:21

Twinkle
Judy
Nutty
Smash Hits
Jackie
Just Seventeen

Smash Hits was a constant from 1982 - 1989, I think. The others came and went

I still have a comb that was a free gift with J17's second or third issue - it is great for wet tangled hair

FredaFrogspawn · 18/07/2020 21:21

The problem pages and readers’ letters were my favourite In The Jackie. I’m sure that’s why I love MN!

As a Scot, I also loved The Broons and Oor Wullie although my parents thought the Sunday Post, in which they features, was far below them.

I got Bimbo, Beano and then Jackie. My neighbour used to get Bunty, Mandy and Judy and so these were all passed on to me when she finished them. I also used to read my brothers comics. I think Hotspur and Hornet.

AhBallix · 18/07/2020 21:27

There were three of us and a mixture of comics, roughly moving here from when we were younger to older:

Twinkle
Bunty
The Beano
Nutty
The Beezer
Misty
Spellbound
Smash Hits
Jackie
Patches
Blue Jeans

Weirdly I always chose the Mandy annual, even though I never read the comic.

FourDecades · 18/07/2020 21:27

Twinkle
Beano
My Little Pony
J17
More
Smash Hits

I was a proud member of the Dennis the Menace fan club

Samcro · 18/07/2020 21:27

Bunty loved the cut out doll

AhBallix · 18/07/2020 21:29

Just noticed mention of Look In. I completely forgot about that one. My sister got that.

MrsR87 · 18/07/2020 21:30

I used to get the Beano every week and graduated on to Smash Hits, Mizz and Just 17.

HandsOffMyRights · 18/07/2020 21:32

Bunty, Twinkle, The Beano and LookIn at various stages.
Then, as a teen, I loved J17.

GervaseFen · 18/07/2020 21:36

I still have the cut out dolls from Twinkle Grin I moved on to horsey ones after but I don't remember the names so obviously made less of an impression

Goyle · 18/07/2020 21:37

My Gran used to buy my brother and I the Dandy and the Beano each week. We'd read one and swap.

Then I got into Smash Hits and Just 17. My brother was into Sega magazine. He had a Sega Megadrive at the time.

notthe1Parrot · 18/07/2020 21:38

I had the Girl, School Friend and Girls' Crystal ( came out on Tuesdays and Wednesdays). My brother had the Eagle. This was in the early 1950s. The newsagent saved them for us and we picked them up on the way home from school.

ALongHardWinter · 18/07/2020 21:41

I used to get Jackie every week from when I was 9 until I was about 17. Also Fab208 when I was 11 - 14.

Millie2013 · 18/07/2020 21:41

The Beano. DD (7) has a subscription now and she loves it too

Leflic · 18/07/2020 21:42

I had Mandy and really liked it. Then I thought I should get something more grown up and got Girl and was deeply disappointed by the crappy articles and cheap plastic gifts.
Found my feet again with a just 17 and I liked Jackie especially the annuals.

Galvantula · 18/07/2020 21:43

Oo @FredaFrogspawn I had Whizzer and Chips every week. I got a poem printed in it once and they sent me a prize

My brother got Buster and we swapped once we read them.

I also had Twinkle before that I think and we got a lot of Beano and Dandy.

Then I was obsessed with Smash Hits for years, followed by Kerrang and Metal Hammer. Grin

I did used to get More magazine for a while, but I don't really do fashion or make up so most of it was kind of irrelevant to me.

RandyLionandDirtyDog · 18/07/2020 21:45

God yes, the Beezer and Topper, The Dandy and Beano.

My grandad bought me a whole box full of comics one year from a yard sale when I was about 7 and staying with them during the school holidays. I used to hate staying there on my own because I didn’t have any friends to play with and I had to be quiet in the afternoons when the grandparents went for a sleep, so I was bored stiff a lot of the time.

Once I had the comics, I was as happy as Larry as I just sat reading them all afternoon every day. It was pure dead brilliant. Grin

hiredandsqueak · 18/07/2020 21:46

Yes I had loads each week as my Grandfather worked for WH Smiths and brought us all the returns each week. I bought all my dc a weekly comic because I remembered how much I loved the piles DGF brought home.
