Did you have a weekly comic as a child?

I graduated to Whizzer and Chips from Twinkle The Comic for Little Girls. My sister had the Topper. We were unimpressed with Bunty, Judy and the like so then moved on to Jackie and Blue Jeans.

Teddy Bear, Twinkle and Jackie.

vanillandhoney · 18/07/2020 20:16

Beano
The Dandy
Girl Talk!
Mizz
Just 17
Smash Hits

The Beano and the Dandy! And Dad used to buy me Girl Talk, and, latterly, the Simpson's comic, but always the Beano and the Dandy. My brother and I used to fight over the free gifts. I miss those days!

Pippin
Twinkle ( Nancy the Little Nurse was my career inspiration)
Jackie ( and a Jackie Annual every year at Christmas from my aunty)

Bbq1 · 18/07/2020 20:19

Twinkle
Bunty
Just 17
Mizz
More
Anyone remember a mag called Catch? It was published for a couple of years and aimed at a J17 audience ie:14 year olds!
These days I collect Jackie annuals and Jackie mags. Love them, so nostalgic.

FredaFrogspawn · 18/07/2020 20:20

The free gifts! I’d forgotten about them.

Ah yes, brilliant times. Started with Twinkle, I can't remember what I moved onto after that, but we had loads of back copies of my sister's Bunty's so I read all of those too.

I had Jackie annuals, so I possibly had Jackie as a weekly comic.

My brother had the Beano, and the occasional Whizzer & Chips.

My mum bought me the very first edition of Hi! magazine when I was about 12 maybe. It had a pair of plastic earrings on the cover Smile

I love how Just17 was aimed at 14 yr olds and Cosmo pretended it was aimed at young women in their first jobs but was read by 6th formers.

I’m sure comics were better value in the 70s and 80s than they are now.

Yes, I had Twinkle, then Suzy (which I never see mentioned but I swear it existed), then moved on to Smash Hits and Just 17

TheBitterBoy · 18/07/2020 20:24

My brother had Whizzer and Chips

Thesearmsofmine · 18/07/2020 20:26

When very young I got a story magazine that came with a cassette with the story on and you collected them all and put them in a case. Then Bunty, smash hits, fast forward and as a teen Mizz, just 17, bliss and sugar.

Comefromaway · 18/07/2020 20:27

I had Twinkle when I was little and Girl between the ages of 9-13 (Anyone remember Patty’s World & Slaves of the Nightmare Factory?). Then went onto Smash Hits.

This thread is bringing back lovely memories! Loved all comics but the weekly delivered ones were, in order
Treasure
Topper
Mandy
Jackie
Fab 208

Have recently bought the first 20 Treasure comics from 1960 from eBay. Such a blast from the past. Re-reading the article and stories I could remember vividly how I felt reading it aged 5! For those who don't remember Treasure it was the 'dimmer' version of Look and Learn which was very academic and had small print - for clever clogs only!

I loved Bunty, then Jackiw (loved Cathie and Claire's problem page!) But my first comic was called Robin, which included The Flowerpot Men, Bizzy Beaver and Nutty Noddle! I also remember Look and Learn...very educational!

Villanemme · 18/07/2020 20:37

I'd forgotten about Robin, my brother got that. I think we also got Playhour from my nan

angorarabbit · 18/07/2020 20:40

Ah yes, my sister got Playhour!

Rebelwithallthecause · 18/07/2020 20:41

The funday times with my dads paper each Sunday

Scarby9 · 18/07/2020 20:44

Robin when I was very little, then World of Wonder. WofW got taken over by Look and Learn, which I never liked.
In 6th form we used to buy one Jackie between the 30 of us in our form, and read it aloud at lunchtime.

Sgtmajormummy · 18/07/2020 20:44

Every Thursday my grandparents came across the city on the bus to have tea at our house. Grandad wore suits and a trilby, grandma had winged glasses and always wore a hat and gloves. They were born at the turn of the century and had worked themselves out of the slums into retired gentility.
They always brought me a comic rolled up in a page of grandad’s newspaper with a tube of sweets rattling inside. It was usually Twinkle or Bunty, with the text written in a rectangle beneath the picture, never the “vulgar” ones with speech bubbles.

What an expression of love, care and unostentatious spoiling.

Scarby9 · 18/07/2020 20:47

@angorarabbit My dad occasionally calls me Nutty Noddle. Has done all my life. I had no memory of it coming from Robin until you wrote that.

SpeedofaSloth · 18/07/2020 20:47

Yes, The Beano and The Dandy.
I think they must have been cheaper than The Beano is now, my recollection is that I had both every week but when I buy The Beano for DS it's about £3, and I genuinely don't think my parents would have had that spare each week.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 18/07/2020 20:53

Bunty, Judy, Jackie and Fab 208, DB had marvel comics, I think they were anyway like Thor and Incredible Hulk and also Whizzer and Chips

WhentheDealGoesDown · 18/07/2020 20:55

I can also remember having Love Affair and Loving when I was about 14
