Did you have a weekly comic as a child?

I graduated to Whizzer and Chips from Twinkle The Comic for Little Girls. My sister had the Topper. We were unimpressed with Bunty, Judy and the like so then moved on to Jackie and Blue Jeans.

Twinkle, then Bunty, Misty, Jackie then Smash Hits.

LadyLovelyLockz · 18/07/2020 21:00

When I was really little, I had Twinkle.

As a very early teen, it was Shout and Fast Forward, then Mizz.

As an older teen, it was whatever that one with position of the fortnight was! I was forever scarred aged 16 by my mum looking at it and saying "well I wouldn't give that 8/10 for difficulty, it's not that hard! I'd say 5 at best". Mortified.

I think comics must have been comparatively cheap back then ( 60s). There were four of us and we had a comic each delivered every Saturday morning. Would cost a fortune now!

They were a few pennies each then. I guess because the print runs were so big as they were much more of a common thing. I’m always shocked at the price when I buy comics now for the grandchildren - and because they all seem to come with a ton of plastic crap.

Neighneigh · 18/07/2020 21:04

Wow you've just reminded me my grandpa would buy us Look In when we visited.

Does anyone remember a magazine called Sky in the late 1990s? Was very music /culture and I just remember thinking how cool it was

byronsbrain · 18/07/2020 21:04

Am I the only one who remembers My Guy'? The one with all the photo stories in!

FredaFrogspawn · 18/07/2020 21:07

I remember that one - it was one of the earliest photo story ones.

I had The Beano and then graduated to Fast Forward, Just 17, Mizz, Sugar and, was it called It's Bliss or Bliss?

And someone at school always had a copy of More magazine and we'd all gather round sniggering at position of the fortnight.
Then at college I used to buy NME, Q and Select

FredaFrogspawn · 18/07/2020 21:13

Oops Beezer

My dad used to stop off coming home from work and buy himself the evening edition of the local paper, he would also buy me a comic as well so I had one every night . I was an only child and they encouraged me to read so it started off as Twinkle type comics, then into Dandy, then Jackie . He did that right up to buying The New musical Express once I was a teenager in the 70s) He would also buy me the new No1. on a 45 record when it came out . Sadly he died at a fairly young age 53 .

Dowser · 18/07/2020 21:14

Yes Beano, Jackie and look and learn
Loved that
They should bring it back

winetomorrow · 18/07/2020 21:15

I was just thinking about this the other day, how thrilled I would be if my Magazine (Bunty/Mandy and Judy) came with a free gift. And I felt a bit sad that kids now will never know the happiness/anticipation of waiting a whole week for something and getting a special surprise gift instead of just binge watching Netflix!

ladykuga · 18/07/2020 21:15

I got Bunty and my sister got Mandy. Used to not pick them up for a few weeks then buy them and have a comic binge. Oh happy days.

Honeyroar · 18/07/2020 21:15

Twinkle
Beano (dad wanted it really)
Bunty
Girl
Then Horse and Pony

Gormless · 18/07/2020 21:16

This is a lovely thread- brings back lots of good memories. I got the Beano every week and then graduated to Look In. I also loved the annuals and summer specials that would come out!

CountFosco · 18/07/2020 21:16

I got Mandy and my brothers got The Beano. Then I moved onto Jackie then Just 17.

My kids now get the Beano (and I'm amazed how middle class it is, lots of cultural references and positive role models), plus The Week Junior and Whizz, Pop, Bang. Magazines are great.
