What tip have you heard about and been incredulous when it actually works?

I saw on Twitter that filling a ziplock bag with water and a few coins and hanging it in a doorway/placing it on the doorstep will keep flies out. It seemed such a bizarre suggestion that I thought I would try it and can confirm it works. I've also hung one near the bins and there hasn't been any flies around for a week.
Are there any other tips that I should know?

A Steradent tablet down the loo, left to soak overnight, removed water stains.

JoysOfString · 21/07/2020 10:10

@kitchendancefloor, WD40 is great for removing sticker and tape glue. Then wash the area afterwards to get the WD40 off, really works.

•I put the folded duvet cover inside the pillowcase and fold neatly. When stacked up it looks really neat and no lost pillowcase.
•if you have hair loss try washing with rice water
• for stubborn cradle cap, pretreat hair with breast milk, when dried leave for an hour or so, I then wash the babies hair with a little shampoo. Wash it off. Put a squeeze of honey on the head leave for a few minutes whilst washing the body. Wash out with clean water. Then apply a thin layer of coconut oil.

Hiccups- just pinch nose, close mouth and hold breath as long as you possible can. No need to do anything else

Fruit flies- put little tray of vinegar in kitchen, they will be attracted to it and drown

Amazon labels etc you want to remove name/address- rub a tiny blob of hand sanitizer on it

Indents of furniture on carpet- run an Ice cube over it

Bicarb in little tray in fridge-keeps smells away

twilightcafe · 21/07/2020 11:30

The 2p trick works!
I rubbed some chrome taps with a 2p last night and the limescale came off so easily.

rosegoldwatcher · 21/07/2020 11:43

I was doing really well with the (only) 2p coin - until I dropped it down the plughole!

monstermunchforlunch · 21/07/2020 11:52

Whoever recommended cleaning silver by lining a bowl with foil, sprinkling bicarb, putting your silver jewellery in and then boiling water on top - thank you!! It’s the best tip ever! I hate cleaning with my silver cloth and now all my necklaces are so shiny with no effort at all.

Nutcrackers are the best thing for hard to open screw top bottles. But the ones you have to press down as you unscrew, anybody got ideas?

I am a one woman mosquito buffet most days and a few years ago was dreading a Greek island holiday as they find me particularly yummy there.

Read on here to take a vitamin b12 tablet daily for a week before. Apparently it gives off a slight whiff which humans can't detect but repels them.

Then an antihistamine tablet every day there so if I did get bit my body wouldn't go crazy releasing histamines.

Anyway I did this and treated myself to some decent smelling repellent lotion just in case.

It worked! I didn't get bitten and ended up lending another family we met the lotion.

Definitely worth a try.

Pushing your tongue up really hard against the roof of your mouth will reduce the length and severity of brain freeze.

If you want someone to elaborate on something they're talking about but don't want to appear nosy maintain eye contact and don't say anything. Nine times out of 10 they will elaborate.

If you want to know who someone's favourite person is in a group, make a joke and watch who they look at when they laugh.

If you're stuck between two choices, flip a coin. How the coin lands doesn't matter, as while the coin is in the air you'll hope for it to land on the choice you truly want.

Not sure about that. I'd look at whoever I thought would most appreciate the joke.

AzraiL · 21/07/2020 12:39

@MrsNoah2020

I thought that too until I tried it myself. As long as it's a generic type of joke and not specific it works. I took stock and realised I always looked at my closest friend when I laughed. And since then I've noticed managers look at their favourite employee, partners look at their spouses, etc.

MrsNoah2020 · 21/07/2020 12:40

Interesting, I will give it a go Smile

AzraiL · 21/07/2020 12:43

@MrsNoah2020 please do, and let me know what you find! :)

@ladyeloise how long do you boil sausage for? I have a child with autism and he cannot eat sausages if they are slightly hard or too brown, I never thought about boiling them!

annabell22 · 21/07/2020 12:57

A solution for sweat/deodorant stains on DH's white t-shirts, please?

Dip them.in vodka then wash as normal
sluj · 21/07/2020 13:26

Vodka on underarm stains??? Hmm, I wonder if hand sanitiser gel would work in the same way and be less distressing? Grin

LadyEloise · 21/07/2020 14:19

@ItsSpittingEverybodyin
I boil them for about 20 minutes as they then brown on the barbecue.
Because you won't be putting them on the barbecue to brown them for your son I'd google it to be sure.

chunn65 · 21/07/2020 14:32

A cooking one I do, Put Pinenuts in the freezer, I use a small tupperware tub, they don't freeze. So when i need them i just scatter into a frying pan to gently cook for a crunchy pasta topping. Also if you buy tomato puree in a tin( usually cheaper than a tube) make squares of baking paper and spoon out a teaspoon of puree one ontop of the other, freeze them in a bag, then when you need a tsp of puree just peel off one tsp. much better than storing a can in the fridge which goes off.

Graphista · 21/07/2020 14:34

If you think that your canned or bottled fizzy drink might have been shaken , tap on the lid three times to avoid being covered in it when you open it up. I tap a can 5 times before opening every time just in case! Too many memories of being caught out!

@BalloonSlayer I was raised by parents/grandparents who very much believed in trying natural/home remedies before turning to modern/western medicine for pretty much anything! As a result I’ve raised dd the same.

I always have in:

Lavendar, peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree and bergamot essential oils - whole load of 1st aid uses! Mainly antiseptic/healing properties

Aloe Vera gel in the fridge - mainly for burns, scrapes and cuts

Arnica cream - bruises, bumps and inflammation

Baking soda - for bites, stings and indigestion

Honey & lemon - winter especially for coughs, colds, sore throats

Not only cheaper than “proper” medication but natural and less risk of side effects (something dd and I really seem to get hit by!)

@QueenCT being a Scot my grandmas swore by whisky, but most strong liquors are antispasmodic and anaesthetic

@doodlebug33 I used to work in wedding industry - many a befuddled look from brides when I told them to spit on their dress during alterations if a pin went awry!

@Invisibletoeveryone and @ghostonthedancefloor nail polish remover also works to clear white boards

@youcancallmeow - you poor thing! I’ve done that! - here’s a tip if you’re still suffering - aloe Vera gel (I use Holland and Barrett’s tube), large sterile dressing, into the centre padded part of the dressing a splodge of aloe gel, few drops lavender oil and couple drops tea tree, place and secure dressing over wound, change approx 6 hourly sincerely and not sarcastically hope that helps. If as I do you store the gel in the fridge it’s SUCH a relief on burns.

@Foodologistgirl skin-so-soft is FAMOUS up here in Scotland for preventing midge bites! Also great for eczema sufferers - spray on your body after shower/bath BEFORE you dry yourself

I think I read there’s either citronella or tea tree oil in it

DinosApple · 21/07/2020 14:52

Whilst I've been sat reading this in my beige trousers a blue biro has drawn all over my leg 🙄.
I can't even blame the kids, I was writing a list earlier!

Are the trousers salvageable?

Tattygran14 · 21/07/2020 15:00

If anybody is actually drinking their vodka, freeze not only the vodka/gin, but freeze tonic ice cubes too. Much nicer when they melt.

InvisibleToEveryone · 21/07/2020 15:36

@Graphista I mean on clothes, vodka or alcohol gel rubbed in helps to get it out of school uniform

greyandwhiteclouds · 21/07/2020 16:37

Tea tree oil rubbed neat (using a cotton bud) onto fungal toe nails every day twice a day until it grows out can work (but bizarrely and annoyingly it only worked on one of my 2 fungal nails but not the other:-()

To deter ants use lemon juice on cotton wool, or citronella sticky patches from savers that are supposed to be mosquito repellent patches - these have totally eradicated our usual summerly bathroom ant infestation!!

Washing soda mixed with water and poured into the washing machine detergent tray with every wash stops it blocking up with hard water.
