What tip have you heard about and been incredulous when it actually works?

I saw on Twitter that filling a ziplock bag with water and a few coins and hanging it in a doorway/placing it on the doorstep will keep flies out. It seemed such a bizarre suggestion that I thought I would try it and can confirm it works. I've also hung one near the bins and there hasn't been any flies around for a week.
Are there any other tips that I should know?

And white vinegar on shirt/t-shirt underarms to neutralise smells before washing (I have teenage boys!!)

GrannyBags · 21/07/2020 16:40

Using peanut butter to get chewing gum out of hair.
Also, if you are tense you tend to put your tongue on the roof of your mouth so consciously moving it down can instantly make you feel less stressed

Is there any way to get a berry juice stain out of a white mattress? Spray-on Vanish stuff just made it turn from dark red to blueeee

GellerYeller · 21/07/2020 17:43

@blurpityblurp I've had success on clothes with Berry stains using vanish oxi action powder. Damp, coat it with powder, give it a few minutes wait and it should lift out. I did wash it after though I appreciate that's not possible with a mattress but it shifted it. It went blue first if that helps?

I haven't tried this on a mattress, but boiling water works for clothes. Could you try standing the mattress on 1 end, and pouring a small amount of boiling water down it, so that it doesn't soak in?
blurpityblurp · 21/07/2020 18:38

Thank you! It's on one corner, so I'll give those a try.

My tip is: don't use a bag of frozen fruit as an impromptu ice pack for a migraine without checking that the bag is unopened.

SunshineCake · 21/07/2020 18:50

Surely boiling water on a stain will just set it.

A protein stain, yes, but not all stains.
QueenCT · 21/07/2020 20:02

I've got a very random one I've just found
Cleaning under the rim of the toilet as in, right up under the rim. Those squirty bidet bottles, the type for after birth? Fill with hot water, place nozzle under rim and squeeze. The pressure literally clears everything out and Envy bleugh, limescale gone!

sympatico1 · 21/07/2020 20:58

I also used neat tee tree oil on a nail infection and it cured it. Dabbed it on morning and night for 6 weeks; nail now fungus free.

I've tried the boiling water on cherry juice stains today. It really works. I can't believe it. Clothes would have been as good as ruined by this in the past.

Anyone got a tip for getting the colour of cat vomit out of a rug? It's very much bile and is yellowy brown. Can't find anything that actually shifts it.

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/07/2020 08:12

Bicarbonate of soda sprinkled on thickly might help remove the odour. My cat was once sick on a carpet after eating almost a whole pack of butter so I know how disgusting it can be.

nannymags · 22/07/2020 11:09

I don’t think all ovens are like this but my oven has a little hinge on the bottom of the inside door and I can slide the glass out! I coated it on the “pink stuff” scrubbed with kitchen sponge and good as new!

FoodologistGirl · 22/07/2020 11:25

Malin52 Sorry you got bitten. Maybe the mozzies in Canada are made of stronger stuff, but I swear it works on UK and Europe ones. I used to suffer so badly from bites while they never touched my husband Confused

ChicCroissant · 22/07/2020 23:13

Soda crystals (from the laundry section at the supermarket) are brilliant at cleaning burnt or greasy pans - I use them after I've popped corn, strong solution with boiling water NOT ALUMINIUM PANS THOUGH! I boil the solution for a few minutes and then leave it to soak.

Citric acid is also a great descaler and smells better than vinegar. Can buy a box at Wilko, or smaller packets from the chemist (also get hydrogen peroxide in a small bottle from the chemist).

Wet tumble dryer sheets are great at getting rid of crud round the bottom of taps. Wet, wrap round and leave for a while. Wipe away with sheet.

I am also looking for the solution to suncream on the interior of the car! I'm going to try the 2p trick tomorrow.

Popsy09 · 23/07/2020 00:11

@Shannith which yoga with Adrienne did you start with?

slinkysaluki · 23/07/2020 00:32

Burnt saucepans, frying pans, shake some bio washing powder in them and add done water leave overnight and pans come clean easily

Bio washing powder also good for pet stains/wee, the enzymes break it down and eliminate smell

Shannith · 23/07/2020 00:48

I@Popsy09 I swear by her 10 mins neck, shoulders and upper back every day.

Then I do her 30 min yoga for runners or yoga for equestrians on alternate days.

I'm not sure I'd have stuck with the equestrian one if I'd not been motivated to stop falling off my horse!

But doing it every other day has genuinely changed the game. I move so much better and 2 months in have a flat stomach. This is little short of a miracle.

And my horse was pratting about today and I laughed at her and was in no danger of falling off. Thus is also little short of a miracle Smile

Popsy09 · 23/07/2020 01:36

Thanks @Shannith
You are braver than me, used to ride but bit of a wuss now!

I read this in a book of Victorian household tips of what to do with your houseplants if you're going away..
Put a jar/bucket of water above the plants and have a shoelace leading from this container to each plant. ..
It really works.
I have it set up in the kitchen for my weed plant....just put the shoelace around the Base of the plant.
I might patent it and call it the ' hydromatic system'....

I do that with my plants, but use thin strips of old towel instead. My mum told me about it. It’s actually quite a well known method so I don’t think you’ll be patenting it. Sorry!

It does work though, you’re right.

londonscalling · 23/07/2020 04:32

Has anyone got any suggestions for treating head lice/nits please? I currently have a young girl living with me who had nits when she arrived. She passed them onto me. I've treated her and myself with every conceivable shop product available
and also tried putting conditioner into dry hair and combing it out with a nit comb. The issue is that my hair is SO thick and coarse so I can't get rid of them myself and I think I'm passing them back to her. I'm SO fed up with it!

slinkysaluki · 23/07/2020 07:04

London tea tree oil is good for nits, the pure stuff mind

Chocolatekitty · 23/07/2020 08:03

I genuinely thought the 2p on limescale thing was going to be rubbish, but had a go last night and got the pesky bits I could not shift straight off! I've had bags of vinegar wrapped around them before with very little effect! Had a 5p hanging about too, so tried that in the interests of science, but it didn't work nearly so well. I wonder what it is about the 2p?
Off to get the chrome showerhead down to get rid of the limescale on that!
