What tip have you heard about and been incredulous when it actually works?

I saw on Twitter that filling a ziplock bag with water and a few coins and hanging it in a doorway/placing it on the doorstep will keep flies out. It seemed such a bizarre suggestion that I thought I would try it and can confirm it works. I've also hung one near the bins and there hasn't been any flies around for a week.
Are there any other tips that I should know?

Can't see how the neck size = half waist size works. As we age and spread, some people thicken a LOT. No way has my neck thickened in proportion to my girth. I would look like Dr Who's Sontaran.

BikeRunSki · 20/07/2020 08:18

Is the neck/waist thing for men? It works for DH now, and 20 years ago when he was a skinny young thing.

DelurkingAJ · 20/07/2020 08:24

@UnaCorda

Saddle soap cleans leather beautifully.

Are saddles not made of leather? Confused

Yes, but I was far too dim to make the connection Smile and several people here have wanted tips to clean leather. I was surprised how much more effective it was than washing up liquid.

Don’t kill long leggy cellar spiders because they eat big hairy house spiders

I did not know this but makes sense for us. We live nears nature reserve and lots of fields. The house has lots of cellar spiders around in corners of the room I’m forever hoovering them up but in the two years we’ve lived here only had 2 big house spiders. I absolutely hate spiders but cellar spiders I can deal with so I quite happy if this is true I think it is :)

Turniptracker · 20/07/2020 08:25

@LunaNorth I literally just rubbed it on the limescale, scratched it off.

LunaNorth · 20/07/2020 08:32

Thanks @Turniptracker! I can rest easy now Smile

lifestooshort123 · 20/07/2020 08:34

OK, the 2p trick. Wet the coin, hold firmly and rub the edge up and down on the crusty limescale bits. They come off really easily and it doesn't scratch the taps. Also works where the tap fits into the sink and bits of limescale pop up.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 20/07/2020 08:44

@damnthatanxiety

BuggerOff andlifestooshort123 Use a 2p piece to remove crusty lime scale from chrome taps. I was amazed! ^this

I couldn’t see how it would work so ignored it...then I got fed up tried it...... my taps now look like new!

How? Do you scrape it off with the coin? Don't you end up scratching the taps?

It scrapes all the scale off with no damage at all to the taps! I was absolutely amazed!

@BikeRunSki

Those white Staedtler rubbers in a blue wrapper get suncream stains off car bodywork.
Are you ACTUALLY KIDDING!!! Our black leather car interior is ruined with white marks from factor 50 and nothing has touched the stains!
Malin52 · 20/07/2020 08:46

@BikeRunSki if that works you have changed my life!

Bella444 · 20/07/2020 08:48

Does anyone know how to get dried paint off my husbands jumper?!

Nestofvipers · 20/07/2020 08:56

@KitchenDancefloor

Does anyone know how to get parcel tape off a upvc windowsill? My DC decided to tape toys to the windowsill for no good reason whatsoever. I can't get the last layer of it off.

Anything abrasive scratches the plastic and the chemicals I have tried seem to disintegrate it 😬

I'm hoping someone will have a random solution like garlic on a banana skin

You could try strong DEET insect repellent. I have never tried it on UPVC (or parcel tape), but I found out by accident that it gets stuff off plastic very well when it removed all the logos/writing from my camera but without damaging the plastic body of the camera.
BikeRunSki · 20/07/2020 09:00

@Malin52, not sure about leather interiors, but it worked for me on the metal bodywork. Full on, super thick factor 50!!

sueelleker · 20/07/2020 09:09

Re: fruit flies, discovered this today - a saucer of apple cider vinegar with a dot of washing-up liquid mixed in. The flies are attracted to the smell and drown. Disgusting but effective. I did this last summer-got so many of the little beggars!

Destroyedpeople · 20/07/2020 09:11

That spraying cologne on chewing gum stuck.to clothes kind of 'freezes' it and then u can pick.it off.

damnthatanxiety · 20/07/2020 09:13

Re 2p coin line scale - dies it have to be a2p coin? Is it the metal or just a handy size ?

FromBigCityToTinyVillage · 20/07/2020 09:14

Has anyone any tips on how to remove blue hair dye that's meant to be non permanent.

Daughter has dark blond hair .
We have tried washing up liquid with crushed vitamin c tablets that we read was great to get rid of stained hair ,and it did lighten it but it made it go slightly green 😂

sueelleker · 20/07/2020 09:19

@FromBigCityToTinyVillage. Would tomato ketchup help? I know it gets chlorine-related green out of blond hair.

sueelleker · 20/07/2020 09:20

I would look like Dr Who's Sontaran.Grin

Bodywork usually means the exterior of the car not the interior.

2p trick - size doesn't matter, just needs to be same composite so a 1p is as good but fiddly.

Sheilasfeels · 20/07/2020 09:42

Use an acetone nail varnish remover to get rid of dried emulsion paint on pvc (window frames, light switches etc). It doesn't damage the plastic. This has been very handy whilst tidying up my parent's house which has been a site of exciting interior decoration experimentation for decades (some of it mine 😂)

FromBigCityToTinyVillage · 20/07/2020 09:44

I will certainly try tomato ketchup ! Will let you know if successful, thank you sueelleker!

Buggersticks · 20/07/2020 09:52

I always squirt furniture polish on sticky residue (like where a label has been on a jam jar, any label, or where sellotape had been stuck) then leave it a while. Wipes right off. Good tips on here, going to try some 🙂

Buggersticks · 20/07/2020 10:05

Hairspray gets nail varnish off carpets. My dd spilled dark nail varnish right across my pale bedroom carpet, it was everywhere. So long as you don't let it dry first, spray the spill with lots of hair spray and scrub it. I promise it works, I have before and after pics somewhere.

Melx42 · 20/07/2020 10:07

I have been doing the plastic see thru bags for years no coins. Everyone in Spain does it apparently! No one ever believes me
