What tip have you heard about and been incredulous when it actually works?

I saw on Twitter that filling a ziplock bag with water and a few coins and hanging it in a doorway/placing it on the doorstep will keep flies out. It seemed such a bizarre suggestion that I thought I would try it and can confirm it works. I've also hung one near the bins and there hasn't been any flies around for a week.
Are there any other tips that I should know?

Sorry, I don’t understand... do you mean your neck size is equivalent to your waist size ie 12” neck = size 12? Am confused!![/quote]
I have heard this too. I think your neck is half the waist size. You hold the trousers up still zipped up and wrap around your neck, so it's really half the trouser measurement going round your neck. This may work in general, but I'm not sure it would work on me with my out of proportion massive tummy - haven't actually tried it.

@MsJuniper

I read a tip on here once for dealing with tantrums, which was to repeat back to the child what they are saying, quietly, on their level. Eg if they are saying "I don't want to go home", reply "you don't want to go home".

I had an emotionally volatile DC and he would get into a right old state which nothing could bring him back from, until I tried this. It was like a magic trick - he sort of sagged and completely calmed down.

This is true .. I do it even with tiny babies .. toddlers especially respond to this as predominantly they want to know you understand them .. you are validating their emotions.. readJanet Lansbury for more on this type of approach

Drink a tiny bit of vinegar when you have hiccups. It's never failed me.

nicegirl73 · 20/07/2020 01:08

@KrabbyPatties
No I guess half the size fold the trousers around your waist when zipped up and if they die perfectly then so will they around your waist.

Does anybody have anything for limescale? I've got a stubborn patch in the toilet bowl.

achickencalledberyl · 20/07/2020 01:57

@Newenw

If you have mugs that are stained, soak them in a solution of steradent or other denture cleaner. They will come up like new.

Milton tabs do the same

BalloonSlayer · 20/07/2020 07:04

Why don't you hold the trousers up to your waist to see if they will fit round your waist?

Nestofvipers · 20/07/2020 07:08

So does a solution of biological washing powder and water. You only need a small amount of powder, leave to soak for a couple of hours and the stains vanish.

Nestofvipers · 20/07/2020 07:09

That was to @achickencalledberyl above

Smashtastic · 20/07/2020 07:29

Burnt the shit out of that pan? Can't get the black off? Don't put it in the bin! Soak using a tablespoon of biological washing powder and water, leave for a few hours and the burnt just wipes away.

Proseccorella · 20/07/2020 07:44

Being kept awake by someone snoring? Make clicking noises with your mouth (the sort when you "giddyup" a horse) and the person next to you will stop. Sounds crazy but I swear it works!!

Aglet · 20/07/2020 07:45

Have always used hairdryer to defrost my freezer. Also place two j cloths rolled up lengthwise on bottom shelf of freezer and trail them into container catching thawing ice. The water runs down the j cloth into container.

olbndansmummy · 20/07/2020 07:45

White spirit on kitchen roll for removing sticky residue on plastics or laminate floor, only a tiny bit should shift it, don't pour it on like I was told to do!

TheWashingMachine · 20/07/2020 07:51

Stubborn limescale, take all water out of the toilet pan so it is dry use that super strong limescale remover for loos, I think it is harpic x5, leave for an hour, come back scub with a toothbrush, flush and voilà.

For tights that stick to your dress or any clothes that cling, rub a little body lotion directly on the material that is against the the tights or skin and no clinging.

That you can remove a Cork from a bottle using a bit of baler twine and a
butter knife...

Wrap your hand in a teatowel and push the Cork right in to the bottle with the knife.
Now loop your bit of baler twine and stick that into the neck of the bottle. Get it looped under the Cork and pull hard...

Ok it only worked once but it was a great party trick...

@KitchenDancefloor

Does anyone know how to get parcel tape off a upvc windowsill? My DC decided to tape toys to the windowsill for no good reason whatsoever. I can't get the last layer of it off.

Anything abrasive scratches the plastic and the chemicals I have tried seem to disintegrate it 😬

I'm hoping someone will have a random solution like garlic on a banana skin

@KitchenDancefloor

I used this to get floor tape residue out of carpet. Worked a treat with no damage to the carpet!

@Covert19

Burying a cat in the foundations of a new house brings you luck.
🤣🤣🐈🤔
Destroyedpeople · 20/07/2020 08:09

Oh I had a landlord that used to put dead animals in the footings of his new builds. It wasn't cats fir luck though it was dead agricultural animals that otherwise he would have had to pay for to be removed ...
True story...you couldn't make it up...

EllaAlright · 20/07/2020 08:09

Putting toothpaste on a ceramic bath to remove hair dye stains. (The outside of the bath somehow got stained and this removed it no problem).

Use a 2p piece to remove crusty lime scale from chrome taps. I was amazed!
^this

I couldn’t see how it would work so ignored it...then I got fed up tried it...... my taps now look like new!

How? Do you scrape it off with the coin? Don't you end up scratching the taps?

LunaNorth · 20/07/2020 08:14

If your dress is sticking to your tights, spray your legs with hairspray.

Hairspray also will stop new shoes being slippery (old trick from my ballet days).

LunaNorth · 20/07/2020 08:15

The 2p tap thing is driving me nuts.

Someone pleease describe what you’re supposed to do!

BikeRunSki · 20/07/2020 08:15

@KitKat1985, unfortunately my dd was too bloody minded at 2 to fall for that, and worse at 8. She’ll wear shorts all winter, to the extent that I have stopped buying her anything other than shorts for school, and spent yesterday in a fleece onesie complaining she was too hot.

BikeRunSki · 20/07/2020 08:17

Those white Staedtler rubbers in a blue wrapper get suncream stains off car bodywork.
