What tip have you heard about and been incredulous when it actually works?

I saw on Twitter that filling a ziplock bag with water and a few coins and hanging it in a doorway/placing it on the doorstep will keep flies out. It seemed such a bizarre suggestion that I thought I would try it and can confirm it works. I've also hung one near the bins and there hasn't been any flies around for a week.
Are there any other tips that I should know?

Any tips on how to get rid of a musty smell that an old building has developed? Nephew is renting a unit for his business that's been out of action for a year. It smells damp and musty.

Any tips for getting rid of ants? I've never had a problem with them before but in the past month they're all over my garden and now they're getting in to my house, found one in my DC bed this evening!!!!
Sprinkle a line of baking powder where they are getting in.

@Lollypop701

Itchy Insect bites.. heat them up with a hair dryer on hot. Do it till you feel the burn... It disperses the histamine which caused the itch for around 4 hours .
Pressing the area with a hot teaspoon also works.

Saddle soap lens leather beautifully.

Lemons or limes can be sliced and then frozen...instant ice cube come slice for drinks.

DelurkingAJ · 19/07/2020 21:37

Cleans leather, even!

UnaCorda · 19/07/2020 21:43

Saddle soap cleans leather beautifully.

Are saddles not made of leather? Confused

saltycat · 19/07/2020 21:44

Itchy mozzie or other bites, stick a teaspoon in very hot water and place back of spoon on bite. Gone.

Hiccups... stand up and place both arms in the air, it relaxes the diaphragm. It also works if a crumb or something goes down the wrong way and you are coughing and eyes are streaming. Miracle thing.

Bunch of flowers flopping all over your wide necked vase? Criss cross sellotape and place stems into the gaps.

Baby wipes are great stain removers. Try them, I use the Aldi ones myself.

If you use wooden pegs for outdoor lines, (and leave them on the line like me!) and they get grubby, put them in a bowl of bleach and water. They come out like new.

Easy dessert? Place ice cream or cream on a plate. Surround it with 4 after 8 chocs and a raspberry or two on the side. So simple, but looks so nice.

Thanks for all the suggestions I had never heard of. Love these threads¬

If you're bleeding in your mouth eat a spoon of sugar. Stops the bleeding straight away.

Catabogus · 19/07/2020 21:49

@Mistymonday What’s the name of the silver jewellery cleaner you recommended, please? Thanks!

Aubergine works on verrucas too.

Also going in the sea gets rid of them.

@Hoppyhops

Sorry if this has already been said, but if you have a jar that you’re struggling to open, turn it on its side and tap the lid on a hard surface (I tap it carefully on the floor tiles). It will ‘pop’ and be much easier to open. Always thank my nan for this one!
Why are you all banging jars on floors and benches, just tap the edge of the lid with a knife to break the seal
elephantskiss · 19/07/2020 22:09

@TroysMammy I was told that the way to stop crying with onions is to make sure your knife is really sharp. I was only told this week so haven't got round to sharpening my knives yet to try it out. Grin

@RiftGibbon I'm sure I read about soaking in vinegar then rubbing washing up liquid into suncream stains before washing to get rid of them.

@lifestooshort123 not sure I get the pizza base one - what's better about that, as opposed to cutting it while still on the tray?

RiverMeadow · 19/07/2020 22:10

@Resisterance I had the same problem. I bought these and placed them outside where the nest was and they were gone within 2 days. Truly amazing things!

Strangely my sister has a ziplock bag with water and coins at her door which I thought was very odd but always forgot to ask why it was there, now I know!

Patsypie · 19/07/2020 22:18

Any tips for cleaning old stains from a cast iron bath?

AnnaA89 · 19/07/2020 22:20

Milk to get rid of hair dye from your skin! Works a treat

Atthebottomofthegarden · 19/07/2020 22:30

Tea stains on a t shirt? (Didn’t notice until after it had dried ☹️)

I can confirm that if your toddler DD scribbles black biro all over the new red leather sofa whilst your DH is in charge, hairspray does indeed lift it off. Fortunately for him.

mineofuselessinformation · 19/07/2020 22:30

White toothpaste (no gritty bits or coloured bits) is good to polish silver jewellery. Just rub it on, rinse and then dry with a cloth.

And vodka lifts crayon off TV sets. I should stop going to the hairdressers, really...

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 19/07/2020 22:33

Get rid of rust by using some tin foil like a cloth.

The burrito roll method for getting your duvet cover on - game changer with a super king duvet!!!!

Antibacterial gel is a brilliant deodorant- as, of course, it’s the bacteria in your armpits that causes the BO. My DH has a skin which reacts to all deodorants and antiperspirants and using this is a game changer for him
