The website Redbubble has some good slogan masks:

Perhaps Orwell got the date wrong.
Worn by force, not by fear.

Jourdain11 · 16/07/2020 20:36

DH has taken to going out in a kind of Lawrence of Arabia style drapey scarf.

DD1, who is only 8, was like, "I am not going to school with him dressed like that. I'd rather DIE." Maybe even sadly die.

@Orangeblossom78

I read today that women are a hundred percent more likely to have lost a job than men, and a quarter of women have had an anxiety attack in recent weeks in the UK. Doesn't surprise me.
I've had a continual fucking panic attack since the mask toxicity started! I'd kill to have had AN attack right now!

@Jourdain11 an opportunity to embarrass our children puts a whole new spin on it....

My day to day ones are going to be purely tick box - I've basically turned a stretchy jersey scarf into something that can stretch over my nose and mouth in two layers, and will sit round my neck on my way to/in between shops. I've got two of them, and they'll get bunged into the wash at the weekend. If I actually have to go to places where I'm going to be within 2 metres of someone indoors for a decent period of time, then I'll upgrade to something which would be of some use in stopping a virus.

In other news, I've got a slightly anxious (caring for elderly mother) but non-dementor friend coming round for a coffee tomorrow morning. We'll be in the garden, but in case she wants to use my loo, what do you think will reassure her? So far I've cleaned it, lobbed bleach down it, and will ensure there is soap, liquid soap and a clean hand-towel there. I can also leave a pack of anti-viral/bacterial wipes available, and also reassure her that I haven't used that loo since its been cleaned (I have another loo on the top floor, so that would be the truth). I don't want to make her feel uncomfortable..

Oh how I giggled last September, back when the world was normal - at a mum dropping their kid off outside the local secondary - and the kid had obviously been REALLY winding the mum up over the holidays because the mum went into peak "over the top goodbye snookums mother" mode right in the front of all the daughter's mates.

It was hilarious and the little triumphant half-jig the mum performed on the way back to the car just topped it off.

TheOrchidKiller · 16/07/2020 20:50

No, Loki, didn't see the whole Vallance thing about the R number fiasco. But nothing surprises me now.

I think the ironing masks thing is because heat might kill germs that are left on them after "lathering" it to death. We're advised to iron work uniforms for this reason. (I iron them because they look utterly dreadful otherwise).

Not ironing my shopping masks though. I have scarves for quick public transport trips, and I've made a couple of wonky apologies for masks out of big hankies and hair bobbles. Washed at 30C with the rest of my laundry after optician trip, drip-dried, no ironing. Very surprised my shoddy sewing survived the wash but it did.

Can't figure out what Boris is going to announce. Snorkel & flippers must be worn to put the bins out? Reopening of casinos?

He is blatantly winding her up with it now! This is the way. Ditch the masks and go for the drapey scarf (or the plague doctor outfit).

DD2 said vaguely the other day, "I suppose those nuns that you see on the bus won't have to change what they wear because they have face coverings already."

I was like, "What do you mean the nuns on the bus? Which nuns?"

"The ones who wear a black veil that covers their whole body with only a crispy crossy bit for their eyes..."

"Um, darling, those aren't nuns, they're ladies wearing the burqa."

"Whassa difference?" says DD2 (ATTITUDEY SHRUG).

"People who wear the burqa are Muslim," puts in DD1 knowledgabley. "And nuns are usually Christian."

They definitely need to be back at school full time, lol...

NannyPhlegm · 16/07/2020 20:50

@BogRollBOGOF We spent the day at a NT property as well. Easy entry, toilets open. There was a one way system but the ground are so big, it wasn't really an imposition.

Your poor DD. I'm 49 and still haven't forgiven DM for wearing powder blue cowboy boots & a fake-fur jacket to the school gates when I was 8!

PickAChew · 16/07/2020 20:58

@Thisdressneedspockets

Advice on laundering masks. I don't even own a fucking iron. I wonder if I could microwave it instead.
I'll just chuck mine in the wash with everything else.

Grin at 6 and 5 mine are still at the age where they think whatever I do is the coolest thing ever because I’m their mum and I know best. I give it 6 months before they wise up Grin
AnxiousElephant77 · 16/07/2020 20:59

I read some of what Vallance said, about offices, that we should have locked down a week earlier, that we hadn’t performed well in this country, that it was unlikely we’d get a vaccine with 100% protection and certainly not any time soon. It was really depressing stuff and I wished I hadn’t read it.

mightbealittlebitmad · 16/07/2020 21:00

I will not be ironing any masks. I still don't even own one but I have been debating buying some with something half amusing on the front. I would go for something derogatory about it all but my husband informed me it would probably just end up with me being shamed online and I could do without the drama.

AnxiousElephant77 · 16/07/2020 21:00

So I’m cheerily sharing it here Grin

BakewellTarts · 16/07/2020 21:11

Does anyone know when Boris is on tomorrow? Is it a reprise of the Daily Sadly Death Show so 5pm? I might try to catch what he has to say.

Patrick Vallence is a professional pessimist. I don't necessarily disagree that a vaccine won't give 100% protection but partial is still a huge step forward when coupled with other treatments. The flu vaccine isn't 100% effective either and needs to be regularly renewed. If covid is similar then fine.

BakewellTarts · 16/07/2020 21:12

I also don't think we have done well. Not to do with when we locked down. More to do with how we managed care homes oh and infection control in hospitals.

Sad I miss that, mines 23 and thinks he knows best about absolutely everything to the point I tell him he doesn't know how to move out yet......

DrearyWallAntler · 16/07/2020 21:24

I actually think the Boris announcement will bring some positives. He hasn't got to deliver good news in a while so he must be chomping at the bit to throw the public a bone.

BakewellTarts · 16/07/2020 21:26

I agree Boris will want to bring gifts. Wonder what they will be?

Wouldn't surprise me - he's seen he has pissed a few people off with the mask thing so he now wants to make a few more people happy
NannyPhlegm · 16/07/2020 21:32

All he's going to do is muddy the waters and complicate an already complicated situation.

He couldn't even project his own recovery from Covid as a good-feel story, for crying out loud

NowYouListenToMeFella · 16/07/2020 21:33

Will be keeping an eye out to see what gifts Boris gives you tomo. I'll have my fingers crossed it will be good news

BlackberryViolet · 16/07/2020 21:34

I’ve ordered some. I may look utterly tragic in them but I’m beyond caring now. I did get dementored in the queue for the Co-op at the start of lockdown. My Granny Weatherwax t shirt, a witch with “I atent dead” across was deemed as in “very poor taste” by the woman in front of me. It could have been worse, I have Death as wellGrin

There's a support group for people dealing with dementia at work, usually there's monthly meeting with tea and biccies but now it's a dial in. I haven't joined in since working from home due to diary clashes but did today. I was a bit worried it would be full of people like Hearhooves. I needn't have worried, it wasn't and was really practical and supportive but god some people are going through some real shit made far worse by by lockdown. One poor woman is trying to help her very reluctant mum choose a desperately needed care home for her dad and they can only do virtual visits.
