What is really sad for Leicester aswell is that this week is traditionally the week that their schools have broken up and most others in the country haven’t. A huge number of people in Leicestershire book their annual holiday for this week as it’s very marginally cheaper. They will in the main lose that money and that opportunity for a holiday.

justasking111 · 16/07/2020 18:59

I am knackered three hours walking around a petting farm pushing a pram with two lively toddlers to boot. What was lovely when we sat down for a rest was a total strangers 3 year old and our two playing ring a rosies naturally, holding hands. I could have cried to see them behaving as all little rug rats should.

justasking111 · 16/07/2020 19:01

To my mind Leicester has a problem that is in a small block of the area, there you need door to door knockers who are multi lingual explaining the problem. This is how it works successfully in SA. We are too scared here of being accused of racism, when in actual fact it is a way to save lives.

DominaShantotto · 16/07/2020 19:02

I'm actually really worried about Boris's next announcement - normally it's been leaked to fuck so it's no surprise - silence makes me think it's going to be a nasty bombshell.

justasking111 · 16/07/2020 19:26

is Boris announcing something @DominaShantotto

TheOrchidKiller · 16/07/2020 19:29

Perhaps Boris is going to apologise?

Ooh, what's that passing overhead? A flying pig!

Or he's resigning?
Actually scrap that little fantasy, we've been through enough, we don't deserve another leadership election.

DominaShantotto · 16/07/2020 19:32

Think it's the Boris Friday show of doom tomorrow - and if it's Friday they're always doomier to make you stay in sucidially despairing for the weekend.
LivinLaVidaLoki · 16/07/2020 19:38

@DominaShantotto
Apparently its more easing of the lockdown with a plan to get people back into offices.
Sure I saw something earlier.

TheOrchidKiller · 16/07/2020 19:47

I just saw on BBC News website (need to get myself a hobby) that Patrick Vallance says there is no need for people to return to their workplaces.

So if Boris is announcing returning to work, considering he's been following the science, that's an interesting turn to take.

And PV can do one for saying that. He clearly doesn't have to share his homeworking space with a DH, a teenager doing online lessons & an attention-seeking cat.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 16/07/2020 19:55

@TheOrchidKiller
Did you see when PV said
*"Asked about R, Vallance says it “becomes a blunt and lagging tool” as the number of infections go down.

It was the right thing to measure early in the epidemic but “it’s not the right thing to be using now”.

He says indications as to a second wave will come from a higher proportion of positive tests"*

I lost all respect for him there as even when pretty mucb every single scientist was saying this ages ago he stood up there on that bloody platform banging on about the R rate when infections were low enough for it to be useless.
He went on and on about the r rate in some areas all the time knowing it was bollocks.
He can bloody do one.

I guess as far as following the science he also has to balance that against the economy and other things I suppose and when people are wfh they aren't popping to the shops after work or getting a sandwich at lunch or even fuelling their car.

Also saw an article that said Bojo has been advised making masks mandatory in shops will backfire on him.

DominaShantotto · 16/07/2020 19:56

I don't want DH to go back to the office yet (his boss is fine with him working from home while schools are still fucked up - hell his boss fled the UK when the pandemic hit before it became a shitfest here!) - school runs are going to be a hell of a lot of juggling in September with staggered start and ends, wrap around care isn't confirmed or justifiable if I'm only doing online lectures - and he's going to have to pull his weight and chip in with the kids as well!

The thinking in his work is teams that have proven they can WFH might be fine to continue permanently if they want - or at least until Christmas.

Thisdressneedspockets · 16/07/2020 19:59

Advice on laundering masks. I don't even own a fucking iron. I wonder if I could microwave it instead.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 16/07/2020 20:04

Whatever I end up using as a mask will live in the car between uses. I'm not fucking washing and ironing it to kill the germs there's less than a 1 in 4,000 chance I have.

Thisdressneedspockets · 16/07/2020 20:05

1 in 5,000 now according to the ons.

Thisdressneedspockets · 16/07/2020 20:06

I'm wondering about the other germs though that I don't want to re-breathe.
Other common colds etc.

DominaShantotto · 16/07/2020 20:07

So not only do we have to wear them, but we've got to pamper them to the extent of getting the iron out?! FFS I don't DO ironing - the kids think it only exists to do name tapes and hama beads!

pigoons · 16/07/2020 20:14

I am struggling at the moment. None of it makes any sense to me any more. I am in Scotland and face masks became mandatory on 10 July. My one and only supermarket shop was hideous. Mask on means no SD as far as I can tell. And no one was putting them on or taking them off safely. So I don't see the point.

Meanwhile there were 11 positive tests in Scotland today. 11 a I am not washing my masks either. Leaving in a sealed food bag in my handbag

Hmmph! I refer you back to my previous post on my new normal office. No way I want to go back to that!!!

DominaShantotto · 16/07/2020 20:18

Mentioned the other day that an acquaintance was bragging that her kids with autism are wearing masks proudly "to keep them safe".

Saw her kids today - both of them have a fucking massive rash all over the areas of their face the mask would cover - at first I thought they had chickenpox or something, then it dawned on me at where it was they had the facial rash and it looked horrendously uncomfortable for kids with such sensory issues as these ones have. Looked like one of them had been skin picking in reaction to the feeling of taking it on and off to be honest.

DD2 would do exactly the same - my mum bought them masks to be helpful and (slightly egged on by me) - she sticks it on her forehead to be a unicorn or on her head as a traffic cone impression.

BakewellTarts · 16/07/2020 20:20

I WILL NOT BE IRONING MASKS. I might have to wear the bastard things from 24/7 and not before and I might wash them occassionally but I will not be ironing them!

Absolutely. Mine is absolutely a token gesture of minimum complience and maximum comfort for me.

I've been shopping in person through panic buying (in a top 5 hotspot at that point), through early lockdown all the way through to now, and I'm finding myself more bothered about the potential reactions of shop staff/ other shoppers than I ever was from the risk of catching a virus Vs my physical reactions to covering my mouth and nose with fabric.

I can't buy the bread I need online (soya free). Anyway, why should I have to buy online to avoid the risk of encountering humans with less tolerance than my irritable bowels?

BogRollBOGOF · 16/07/2020 20:25

We don't even do hamma beads in this house, and the iron ain't coming out for a wedding in the near future Grin
Allflightscancelled · 16/07/2020 20:25

Ironing masks? Ha ha ha.

I dont iron anything let alone fucking masks.

I'm not hsndwashing the bastard either.

BogRollBOGOF · 16/07/2020 20:32

Anyway, in normality rebellion of the day, the DCs and I went to some NT gardens and had a reasonably normal and very pleasant afternoon.

Getting in was fine. Managed queue for toilets. Cafe serving for mainly outside and a few indoor tables, but it was a pleasant afternoon to sit out. Gardens are blooming. One way system not much of an imposition. Tunnels and some outhouses open.
A few masks, only on older people which I can understand.
Bought DH's birthday present early while that's straightforward Wink

Orangeblossom78 · 16/07/2020 20:33

I read today that women are a hundred percent more likely to have lost a job than men, and a quarter of women have had an anxiety attack in recent weeks in the UK. Doesn't surprise me.
