Flying Ant Day

So many flying ants here (South East) we've got the patio doors shut. Does it happen on the same day all over the UK or is this a localised thing?

Thanks for this! I had never heard of this before, or noticed it. We got home earlier to find lots of them on our front doorstep and one followed us in. I was worrying we had some terrible infestation. But apparently it’s not just us Grin We’re North West

Scoobygang7 · 12/07/2020 17:58

Catch them depending on species you can get £5 per Queen

itchyfinger · 12/07/2020 17:59

I live SE coast and we had it a couple of weeks ago

CurlyhairedAssassin · 12/07/2020 18:05

Oooh, I did wonder whether today would be the day. I saw a few flying ones crawling out of my front path when I brought the shopping in a couple of hours ago. The others without wings seemed to be in a frenzy too. I'm in Liverpool but haven't seen them over cars etc yet which is what usually happens.

FrugiFan · 12/07/2020 18:16

@Davros

Yes. They all started taking off at once. Sprayed Raid and then hoovered up the bodies
That's a bit sad, they don't do any harm and are beneficial to other insects and birds.
FrugiFan · 12/07/2020 18:18

Yes it was definitely the day today. We went to Paultons Park (Hampshire) and ate our lunch watching them all take off- in the other direction luckily - then spent the whole day being bashed in the face by them and trying not to step on them. Got home - about 5 miles away - and there were a load in the garden here too.

MarshaBradyo · 12/07/2020 18:20

Yep! My neighbour texted me today to say we had some then all up the road

Just talking about it, National flying ant day

mazsagong · 12/07/2020 18:23

Oh, one fell out of my laundry as I was putting it away. I’m off to shut all the windows so more don’t get in.

Theskyisblueithink · 12/07/2020 18:26

SE here.
Horrible things! They arrived this morning.
I'm burning a citronella candle hoping it deters them. Don't know if it works. We've got raid as backup.

MsSweary · 12/07/2020 18:34

Kent, yes they arrived at about 4.30 this afternoon.

Davros · 12/07/2020 18:37

eddiemairswife I sprayed and hoovered because they were inside. Very many had taken off by then so it was just the late/slow ones

MissHemsworth · 12/07/2020 18:37

Loads here...also bedfordshire!

Fluffy40 · 12/07/2020 18:38

Plenty in Herts today

avocadotofu · 12/07/2020 18:43

I live in south east London and there are loads here too!

Bluewavescrashing · 12/07/2020 18:44

It's all kicking off here! South Coast.

InMySpareTime · 12/07/2020 18:47

Flying ant day here in Manchester, thousands of the fuckers.

LadyCatStark · 12/07/2020 18:52

I didn’t know this was a thing! We had this last year; flying ants everywhere one day in our garden and all over the pavements. I was just wondering how to get rid of them and then... gone.

Where do they go?

EasterIssland · 12/07/2020 18:58

Loads yesterday in sw

Itis6oclocksomewhere · 12/07/2020 19:01

Loads appearing here in Norfolk. Patio was covered this afternoon.

WerkHorse · 12/07/2020 19:06

London, windows shut all day. Like an oven in here.

Has there always been flying ant day? Prior to about 10 years ago I had never experienced it. Lived here for 20 years and in SE prior to that. Never a thing when I was a kid and out all day every day when not at school in the warmer months.

LeslieYep · 12/07/2020 19:06

Yes here in bucks!

FernGilly · 12/07/2020 19:20

Suffolk definitely happened here today!

Binterested · 12/07/2020 19:23

Oh I didn’t know. Just found one in my kitchen (London)

Thesunrising · 12/07/2020 19:27

This must happen in waves. 24th of June was main flying ant day in Bristol. A smaller second wave today.

Aragog · 12/07/2020 19:33

Coincidently my MIL (South Yorkshire) has just texted to say they've had a lot of flying ants this afternoon.
