Hopefully the RSPCA or someone comes to take care of it soon.

Although it's probably non-venomous I'd be taking no chances myself, just in case my own identification was wrong. Especially with it being an albino so not showing the "normal" colouring. Let the experts handle it.

DGRossetti · 10/07/2020 15:35

Just had to say how envious I am of OP.

Wouldn't bother me (or DW) to find a snake in out back garden - of any size.

I think even non venomous snakes can carry bacteria and parasites in their mouths, so you wouldn't really want to get nipped.

Beautiful snake! Looks like a corn snake possible morph albino or snow. Definitely needs a diet though It's "hips" can be a sign of obesity in corns or its gravid (pregnant) or is egg bound, hard to tell from photos! Hopefully rspca come out soon.

ajandjjmum · 10/07/2020 16:02

The OP's gone very quiet. Oh dear - bit worried about her.

fitflopqueen · 10/07/2020 16:04

Moved to a new home temporarily, after a couple of days our spaniel was wandering round the shared gardens and came back with a baby tortoise. I was horrified thinking she had nicked someone's pet and went to a neighbour who laughed and said there were lots.
This was my first intro to pets and wildlife in Turkey, she picked up many after that but we just put them back into slightly safer areas.
There were snakes there too, i would have died if dog had found one of those luckily she only found dead ones.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 10/07/2020 16:09

The OP has been spotted! Oops.

It's fine if you wash your hands and use sanitiser. They rarely bite.

SnakesandKnives · 10/07/2020 16:33

I’ve been bitten a fair few times over the years and never had any sort of reaction or infection - just lots and lots of teeny holes in my hand

I’m gonna guess at female corn snake too.....but wouldn’t bet anything on it from those photos - would need a better shot of the head to be definite :)

Am also jealous!

Crunchymum · 10/07/2020 16:46

My worry would be that it would slither off elsewhere?

You really should have secured it OP (for its own health)

Hope you get it resolved and RSPCA are able to come and remove it for you.

Londonmummy66 · 10/07/2020 17:04

Am I allowed to say that it would make a very pretty handbag?

KitMarlowesCodpiece · 10/07/2020 17:18

Snupdate, please, OP.

SnakesandKnives · 10/07/2020 17:21

Grin. My python is gonna be trousers and boots when she finally slithers off this mortal coil!
LochJessMonster · 10/07/2020 17:31

Just to clear a few things up, this is an albino corn snake- they are usually easily identifiable by the bright orange/red colour. A Burmese is usually seen as green/brown.

So it’s not idiotic for an inexperienced person to get albino versions confused.

Also, corn snakes are usually long and thin, this one is quite chubby which could be because it’s just eaten, pregnant or just fat.
Burmese are usually stockier.

All snakes can bite so it’s no use saying ‘corns snakes are harmless’. Corn snakes are usually a placid species and this one looks quite chilled. But an inexperienced person grabbing it by the head may well provoke it. A bite from a corn snake is pretty mild though and most of the time you don’t actually know it’s struck until you see pinpricks of blood.

Because it’s been pretty cold recently it’s probably not feeling very good which is why it’s not moved much.

If you do find a snake like this in your garden, you could put a bin or box down for it to crawl into, or over it to contain. Then call rspca or a local pet shop who may come and help.

bettsbattenburg · 10/07/2020 17:39

Yep, it's wild. They are endemic to some areas so best keep your small pets and children inside at all times OP.

essexmum777 · 10/07/2020 17:45

this happened to me once - grass snake was trapped in my garden and in danger of drowning, it had got into an old shallowish well - which i also was unaware of, rspca refused to come and rescue it - so i did the sensible thing of putting the kids in the car and driving a few miles away to coffee and soft play whilst OH rescued it and released it in a safe quiet spot over the county line

AutumnDragon · 10/07/2020 17:46

Are you in Somerset as I'm sure I've recently seen something about an escapee and it was a similar colour

Zoomintheroom · 10/07/2020 18:13

@70isaLimitNotaTarget

Wellllllllllllll if nobody claims it , you have a Snake of your very own Grin

Is it the case with identifying them that Venomous Snales have eliptical eyes and Non Venomous have round eyes ?

@70isaLimitNotaTarget No, that's a bit of a myth and pupil shape is not a reliable way to identify a venomous snake from a non-venomous one.
Snakeomg · 10/07/2020 18:14

So it’s bad news.

I had to go out to a meeting but luckily my ddad was around to wait at my house until the RSPCA arrived. Had a call to say RSPCA lady was on her way. Great. 10 minutes later my ddad called to say... he’s Lost. The. Fucking. Snake!

Can’t find snake anywhere.
