That's actually quite pretty!

Pelleas · 10/07/2020 14:09

Goodness, @Laserbird16 ! That's some snake! I can see why you'd need to be careful with your poultry!

amusedtodeath1 · 10/07/2020 14:14

Oh wow OP. I'd be staying far away from it too and I'm ok with snakes generally. Hope she's been rescued now.

Regards Glory Holes, up north it was originally used to describe a built in cupboard, we used to have one in the attic in our old house. To me they have to be spooky to qualify Grin

@iklboo my comment was because a number of PP were saying look how big a python is compared to a corn snake how could it possibly be a python, and I assume a python starts off small

DramaAlpaca · 10/07/2020 14:17

@ThatDamnScientist I know! I couldn't believe my eyes. It was very small, only about 6cm long. I got DH to deal with it along with the snail I found the same morning in the bathroom I didn't even know we had lizards in Ireland Confused At least we don't have snakes here, not wild ones anyway. Thank God.

Itsjustabitofbanter · 10/07/2020 14:19

@VeniVidiWeeWee that’s a hatchling Burmese which still looks nothing like the snake in op’s garden. And I didn’t mean to be rude people. As a herpetologist I get frustrated at the hysteria when people spot a rare escapee. A corn snake is a very small, harmless snake that even a child could easily keep. Burmese pythons can get over 20 feet, weigh 200lbs and easily kill an adult. Even a small burm would look completely different to that snake. The laws on keeping reptiles as pets is currently under review and us collectors are worried about a potential ban on keeping them, it weakens our case when people are losing small harmless snakes which then get described as MASSIVE PYTHONS!!!

iklboo · 10/07/2020 14:19

@ineedaholidaynow - they do, yes. But as I said, some species have a cap. Once you know your snakes you get to recognise the species, markings, head shapes etc. Smile

iklboo · 10/07/2020 14:19

Sorry pressed post too soon - once you know the species you can get a rough idea of how big they will eventually grow.

JacobReesMogadishu · 10/07/2020 14:20

In fairness it's really hard to get an idea of scale/size in that first photo - it could be 6ft or 6"

Itsjustabitofbanter · 10/07/2020 14:21

@ineedaholidaynow because pythons get so much bigger, they are a completely different shape when they are small. The op says the snakes about 4 feet, but it’s extremely lean. If you google pythons at the same length you’ll see that they look absolutely massive compared to a corn snake as they’re extremely heavy bodied snakes

jessstan2 · 10/07/2020 14:22

Large tapeworm which has come up through the drain from next door.

ThousandsAreSailing · 10/07/2020 14:23

OP can you put your hand in the shot so we get a better idea of sizeGrin

ipswichwitch · 10/07/2020 14:26

I once found a corn snake when I was in a night out just slithering past the pub. Found a Happy Meal box on the pavement, scooped it up and handed it over to a bunch of police men sat in their van. we thought it escaped from the pet shop up the road, so they took it back to the station for one of their colleagues to look after and I carried on with my night out! No idea what they thought as I went tottering over brandishing a Happy Meal box blathering on about snakes 😂

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/07/2020 14:59

Wellllllllllllll if nobody claims it , you have a Snake of your very own Grin

Is it the case with identifying them that Venomous Snales have eliptical eyes and Non Venomous have round eyes ?

BadBear · 10/07/2020 15:03

@Itsjustabitofbanter - dude relax. I saw the picture on my phone and though it was taken from a big height so it looked massive. No need to call people morons.

I now realise I was mistaken.

Grumpbum123 · 10/07/2020 15:07

Just beautiful.

ChickenFriedFudge · 10/07/2020 15:13

I hope RSPCA come out soon OP!

AuntyPasta · 10/07/2020 15:13

My dog would be so jealous of your dog. We only get squirrels and next door’s cat in the garden here.

Thirtyrock39 · 10/07/2020 15:15

My frames of reference are quite shallow but to clarify the snake Britney Spears danced with at the vmas years ago is not what is in the ops garden?

Thirtyrock39 · 10/07/2020 15:16

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 10/07/2020 15:16

Has it been rescued yet OP?

I spotted a tortoise in the middle of the road once, the first time I met MIL. We’d stopped the car and DP had just picked it up when the owner came running out of their house looking for it. I’m always a bit gutted now when we go to MIL’s and there’s no free tortoise.

BadBear · 10/07/2020 15:19

@Thirtyrock39 loving your frames of reference Grin I can with certainty say this was an albino burmese python. Wink not the same, not as long and chunky.

Lockheart · 10/07/2020 15:23

It's a beauty!

If you have some sort of net you could possibly try scooping it into a box if you don't want to handle it.

It is not dangerous - at least not to an adult human. I won't offer a specific ID from a couple of photos taken from a distance but I can tell you it's a constrictor and not venomous. They can still bite, but they don't have venom.

uselessdiyer · 10/07/2020 15:26

Holy fuck! I'd be outa there immediately!

Ishihtzuknot · 10/07/2020 15:33

Shock And there was me ready to say ‘it’s just a slow worm’ have you got a local Facebook group to ask around if someone has lost it? I doubt the rspca will be able to track the owners and it’ll be a shame for them to lose their pet (if it is one)
Maybe someone’s playing jumanji...
