Jodie Comer 'cancelled' because she's dating a trump supporter??

MonsteraCheeseplant · 08/07/2020 07:13

This is weird, right? I've just seen Jodie Comer trending on Twitter and I wondered why, it genuinely seems to be people being upset at her for 1. Being straight and 2. Dating someone who supports Trump.

Is this is a US vs UK thing because Politics really isn't as big of a deal here? WTF is going on?

But there’s no evidence that she’s dating a Trump supporter. Just tinhats engaging in stalking and manipulation.

The initial post has sparked a wider discussion, it's no longer really about Jodie Comer, keep up!

Doyoumind · 08/07/2020 09:34

Another day, another cancellation. If you don't fit into the tiny box allocated for you, if you step out of line 1mm, you are over.

Evelefteden · 08/07/2020 09:34

Social media is becoming more and more ridiculous and dangerous by the minute

Part of that wider discussion is the lack of real information and the tinhats tinhatting!

Yes I agree. It’s unnerving. Society eating its self

Don’t be so rude and patronising because people are pushing back at your attempts to derail.

cloud1183 · 08/07/2020 09:39

@EvilPea she sounds like a very down to earth girl and has actually left twitter due to the crazies on there.

PlanDeRaccordement · 08/07/2020 09:42

Reminds me of the Kat Von Dee cancelling because she once dated a “Nazi” because some idiots confused a Bhuddist symbol tattoo he had on his neck with a Nazi swastika.

Maduixa · 08/07/2020 09:42

Also keep in mind that in the US, being associated with a party on your voter registration record (which is publicly available) doesn't necessarily mean that you are a member of that party or ever have been or have given them a single cent in dues or donations. In some states (not all) you have to be registered with the party affiliation to vote in a primary. Some people do that opportunistically - e.g., Repubs registering as Dems (or vice versa) to sway the State primary to a candidate less likely to win a national election.

Evelefteden · 08/07/2020 09:45

@Krong

*He is a racist, misogynistic, homophobic man who has bragged about assaulting women. This is not opinion, this is fact. He has fascistic tendencies and is a real threat to democracy in the US. This is not opinion, this is fact. Anyone who supports such a person is morally dubious. It’s not as petty as the Tory v labour nonsense we have here.

If you want to support Trump or be with someone who does, expect places like social media to point out who you are.*

^^^ yes

It’s scary that people actually have a mind set like this. Nothing better than vigilantes on a ‘moral’ crusade.

Swop Trump for

People with GC views
People who are Gay
People who have abortions
People who are Muslims
People who are Jewish
People who support BLM

Where does it stop? Who gets to decide the moral footpath the entire world has to follow?

Be careful for what you wish for because one day you might find yourself on the wrong side of what every one is supposed to think enduring the wrath of ‘cancellation’ with people saying - ‘well you deserve it’

Article which has just come out on cancel culture

midsomermurderess · 08/07/2020 09:51

Most of it is inarticulatemuddled nonsense. If any of these people could think and express themselves clearly it might be worrying.

rainbringsjoytome · 08/07/2020 09:51

@rainbringsjoytome when someone is LITERALLY racist and sexist it's beyond "really" disliking someone. It's beyond anything even the Tories have done, Trump is in a league of his own, far worse than republicanism as a whole which is a legitimate political ideology. So yes, I stand by my comments

Whether you like it or not, Trump is the legitimate leader of the USA, elected in their system.

Many people felt just as strongly about Thatcher LITERALLY destroying working class communities and society.

Your reply just proves the point I made.

Krong · 08/07/2020 09:53

@Evelefteden did you honestly type that? I don't even want to copy and paste it. How dare you compare trump to that list?

Livelovebehappy · 08/07/2020 09:54

Just because you might be a republican, doesn’t mean you support Trump. There were lots of Labour supporters who didn’t support Corbyn in the last election, who didn’t switch parties, but abstained from voting.

Broomfondle · 08/07/2020 09:56

I think it's incredibly sexist. So who she dates affects who she can vote for? Her politics must align with her male partner's? Please.
And why is it automatically her supporting a Republican and not him supporting a Liberal.
If she feels she has enough good attributes to want to date that's her decision. She's dating him not voting him into office.

DitchinVirgin · 08/07/2020 09:57

I fucking love Jodie Comer and couldn't give a flying shit.

Broomfondle · 08/07/2020 09:58

He has good enough attributes to date sorry

Well obviously I typed it as you read it Confused

‘ideological conformity‘ - out of the sky news link that was posted. I think that explains the situation were in pretty well tbh.

rainbringsjoytome · 08/07/2020 10:07

Point out who you are? Jeez.
I am always taken aback by people on the left, who decry others as fascists yet advocate a policy of harassment and shaming to silence and ostracise those who hold different opinions - or associate with those with different opinions.

Shosha1 · 08/07/2020 10:07

The amount if online trolls who follow stars and turn against them if the star doesn't follow the narrative that the so call fans want it is terrible.

I'm a huge fan of Outlander and follow Sam Heughan on Twitter. The abuse he and his co star Caitriona Balfe have had because they are not a real life couple is awful. Any woman he is seen with, is trolled and abused. Caitriona' Husbsnd has has terrible abuse.
At the beginning of lock down, Sam had to release a statement condemning it all as it had got so bad.

BoreOfWhabylon · 08/07/2020 10:14

@CuriousaboutSamphire

Has she lost her job? Is she being prevented from talking in public? Is her social media closed down? As of this moment no... but we have all seen how this kind of crap can play out - whether th target os male or female.

And again, even if Trump is all the evils in the universe, there is nothing to say that Comer's boyfriend, if he exists, is who Tweeters think he is, votes as they seem to think he does, is anything other than a person whith a different opinion!

Social media is becoming more and more ridiculous and dangerous by the minute...

Yes indeed.

I've done a bit of digging, NB, none of this is fact: the putative boyfriend is, apparently, from Boston (a city with a large Irish immigrant history). He apparently follows Trump - I do myself just to see what he says next - but is a member of the American Solidarity Party. This is a Christian Democrat Party. This would fit for someone with traditional RC values.

A core principle of the American Solidarity Party is the consistent life ethic, understood as “respect for life and the dignity of all persons on all issues.”[50] Like other social conservatives, the ASP opposes abortion, euthanasia, and embryonic stem cell research, but it differs from many of them by rejecting capital punishment and holding to Just War principles in foreign policy. It regards economic justice as an essential aspect of respect for human life.[51]

The American Solidarity Party also calls for fair labor practices and the strengthening of labor organizations, a wider distribution of wealth and productive property, the provision of decent health care to all members of society, responsible stewardship of the environment, and policies that strengthen the family and civil society.[50] (Wikipedia)

Jodie Comer is from Liverpool, a city with a large Irish immigrant history. She attended a RC school. She may or may not be a practising RC. If she is, then the man sounds like he might be a good match for her.

She famously is very private, she doesn't talk about her relationships, religion or politics. Sensible lass.

This. The hypocrisy blows my mind

slipperywhensparticus · 08/07/2020 10:24

@UserErrorMessage

It is weird dating someone who supports Trump
You really only date people who share all of your views?

That seems weird to me
