Jodie Comer 'cancelled' because she's dating a trump supporter??

MonsteraCheeseplant · 08/07/2020 07:13

This is weird, right? I've just seen Jodie Comer trending on Twitter and I wondered why, it genuinely seems to be people being upset at her for 1. Being straight and 2. Dating someone who supports Trump.

Is this is a US vs UK thing because Politics really isn't as big of a deal here? WTF is going on?

What a welcoming tolerant Left we have today. All a woman has to do is constantly maintain purity in her beliefs and associations and she won't be viciously torn apart and declared cancelled.

notheragain4 · 08/07/2020 08:50

@rainbringsjoytome when someone is LITERALLY racist and sexist it's beyond "really" disliking someone. It's beyond anything even the Tories have done, Trump is in a league of his own, far worse than republicanism as a whole which is a legitimate political ideology. So yes, I stand by my comments.

derxa · 08/07/2020 08:50

I wouldn't be friends with a Trump supporter, I don't want to be friends with people whose ethics and morals are so far from mine. Grin

MonsteraCheeseplant · 08/07/2020 08:51

You are the sum of the 5 people you spend most time with.

I wouldn't be friends with a Trump supporter, I don't want to be friends with people whose ethics and morals are so far from mine.

You see, that's bullshit. You're falsely placing others in a position of being diametrically opposed to everything you believe and that there can be no common ground. The world is just not that black and white. People can change their minds (including you!). How can opinions change if we make our whole world an echo chamber? How is life fun if everyone is a robot who thinks the same? And in any case, what business is it of yours (one) who someone else spends time with and what makes you think all these assumptions you are making are anywhere near correct?

OP posts:
jessstan2 · 08/07/2020 08:52

I looked her up and recognise her from TV programmes. She is a young woman in her 20s.

What business is it of anyone else whom she dates? Most people have to kiss a few frogs before settling down, she has plenty of time.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 08/07/2020 08:57

would be unimpressed by someone dating a Trump supporter. I would question everything else about them as my view is that any thinking person would think he was deranged.

Would you fact check first?
Is being a Republican enough proof?
Is being an ex Republican enough proof?
Is following on Twitter utterly damning?

From here, UK non Twitter user, that all* looks truly weird, very much a stretch of imagination, looking to be offended and not a 'real' thing!

*The twitter thing, not your opinion

notheragain4 · 08/07/2020 08:58

@MonsteraCheeseplant but again you're cheapening Trump support to being like putting jam on the scone first, or what football team you like, or whether you agree with universal healthcare. Supporting Trump, in my opinion, defines you as a person, it means you value white men over everyone else in society or you are too stupid to realise what Trump stands for.

No I don't choose my friends based on political ideology, though that often naturally happens, but liking Trump is akin to supporting terrorism, it's beyond the pale.

He would not be in power here as he would have been forced to step down after pussy gate, don't confuse his position of power in the States with him, we are just de-sensitised after years of political turmoil.

But as has been said, there is no proof this fella is a trump supporter so it's moot.

lottiegarbanzo · 08/07/2020 09:00

The phrase 'cancelled' is so bizarre, isn't it. The peculiar grandiosity of lives lived solely on the internet. 'I have cancelled you (from my teeny tiny world, in which no-one pays me any attention anyway, as I've done nothing in my life to earn admiration or respect).

Can I 'cancel' Trump in real life, just by saying so? Do I have to say it three times while turning around, looking in a mirror, what?

monkeyonthetable · 08/07/2020 09:00

It’s also a wider problem in society - people just aren’t willing to listen to each other anymore. We’ve turned into a planet full of immature teenagers.

Exactly what @Nuffaluff said.

ProfessorPootle · 08/07/2020 09:14

@Nuffaluff

It’s just idiots on the internet. It’s also a wider problem in society - people just aren’t willing to listen to each other anymore. The idea that ‘I’m a democrat, so we’re the goodies and the republicans are the baddies’, like they’re in Star Wars or something. It’s so childish. We’ve turned into a planet full of immature teenagers.
Same in the UK though with the conservatives as baddies, labour as goodies all over social media, seen so many people virtual signalling saying they’d never date a Tory, bla bla bla. They don’t realise half their friends and relatives vote Tory. It’s just sad and means an awful lot of people don’t engage in any kind of politics on their sm. Although maybe that’s a good thing, but it’s why it comes as such a shock to the far left when Boris wins by a landslide.
LemonTT · 08/07/2020 09:15

@cremuel

To be fair, if she is posting a lot about BLM and left-wing activist stuff (which the tweets imply she is) and is then dating an active Trump supporter, that is a bit hypocritical and I could see why people would be annoyed. But still really creepy that people have gone to such lengths to stalk her. If her partner is just a republican rather than a Trump supporter then it’s not such a big deal.
What is hypocritical about it.

I’m far more worried about a society that doesn’t allow people to date someone if they don’t approve of their views.

StCharlotte · 08/07/2020 09:16

It's time these kids went back to school.

Evelefteden · 08/07/2020 09:18

If he's an outspoken Trump supporter, then I understand the vitriol..If he's just a republican, then no, that's not fair

Jesus. People are allowed to vote for who they want and speak out for who they like. Online abuse is never ‘fair’

‘Cancelling’ is so much more than Online vitriol, it’s getting people sacked from their jobs, stopping people from talking in public, getting people to be afraid to support them. Getting their social media platforms closed down. Basically cancelling their lives because some body doesn’t agree with what they say.

If someone thinks it’s ok to target a human being in this way because of their political beliefs then I wonder about their mental stability tbh.

It’s also a wider problem in society - people just aren’t willing to listen to each other anymore. We’ve turned into a planet full of immature teenagers

This. But I think it actually goes past not willing to listen it goes right to the point of unwilling to let even people speak or have different beliefs.

It’s got to stop. The wider implications of this is creating a society that is eating its self.

Krong · 08/07/2020 09:18

You see, that's bullshit. You're falsely placing others in a position of being diametrically opposed to everything you believe and that there can be no common ground. @MonsteraCheeseplant

No, there can certainly be common ground. Probably how we ended up friends in the first place. But if they truly believe in a political party that seeks to harm the most vulnerable in society, I just lose all respect and interest in the friendship. I don't want my opinions changed towards supporting someone like Trump??

cloud1183 · 08/07/2020 09:18

I miss the days where you could have an opinion without being torn to shreds. These twitter trolls are making out her boyfriend is a Trump fan with zero proof of that whatsoever

Krong · 08/07/2020 09:20

Agree with @notheragain4, @MonsteraCheeseplant

Ending a friendship over someone supporting a different football team, or having a differing opinion on your favourite food - stupid. I relish friendships with people who challenge my views.

This is very different. Supporting Trump is quite an extreme thing and really says a lot about your character.

Maduixa · 08/07/2020 09:21

ProfessorPootle: They don’t realise half their friends and relatives vote Tory. It’s just sad and means an awful lot of people don’t engage in any kind of politics on their sm.

There used to be a joke in Glasgow: "Who voted Tory? OK, SOMEBODY is voting Tory, and we're going to find out WHO!" Bit more popular these days, I think.

CherryValanc · 08/07/2020 09:22

@Beebeet

Twitter is a cesspit, so people have really bothered to find his voter registration (why?), and also say his dad must be an arse as he has an American flag on his Twitter. Can someone make it make sense please?
No, sorry, that's not possible. Sense and Twitter are oxymorons.

I think the best thing to be cancelled would be Twitter itself. It appears to be full of wazzocks who overuse the word 'disgusting' and cannot cope with different views.

They'd be better off away from Twitter where they might learn a bit of resilience and cope with people who don't constantly congratulate them for their .

DrDavidBanner · 08/07/2020 09:24

It makes no sense to me. It seems like they now hate her because in Killing Eve she plays a lesbian woman but by dating a Republican she can no longer be an ally to LGBT community? She also played a homicidal sociopath in Killing Eve, has she been cancelled by serial killers too?

I dread to think how these idiots cope with the real world, maybe thats why they're always so angry.

MintyMabel · 08/07/2020 09:25

YABU for saying a person has been cancelled. What a load of bullshit.

I don’t know of you are being deliberately goady or genuinely ignorant, but there is a difference between simply disagreeing with someone’s politics, and being happy to be with someone who supports Trump.

He is a racist, misogynistic, homophobic man who has bragged about assaulting women. This is not opinion, this is fact. He has fascistic tendencies and is a real threat to democracy in the US. This is not opinion, this is fact. Anyone who supports such a person is morally dubious. It’s not as petty as the Tory v labour nonsense we have here.

If you want to support Trump or be with someone who does, expect places like social media to point out who you are.

MintyMabel · 08/07/2020 09:27

Has she lost her job? Is she being prevented from talking in public? Is her social media closed down?

^^^ yes

narrowboatgirl · 08/07/2020 09:32

But there’s no evidence that she’s dating a Trump supporter. Just tinhats engaging in stalking and manipulation.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 08/07/2020 09:33

Has she lost her job? Is she being prevented from talking in public? Is her social media closed down? As of this moment no... but we have all seen how this kind of crap can play out - whether th target os male or female.

And again, even if Trump is all the evils in the universe, there is nothing to say that Comer's boyfriend, if he exists, is who Tweeters think he is, votes as they seem to think he does, is anything other than a person whith a different opinion!

Social media is becoming more and more ridiculous and dangerous by the minute...

EvilPea · 08/07/2020 09:33

I have a bit of a girl crush on her.
I remember reading some tweets from her when she was on a train and someone was watching killing Eve near her and she was working out how best to work the situation. It was brilliant and hilarious.
