Jodie Comer 'cancelled' because she's dating a trump supporter??

MonsteraCheeseplant · 08/07/2020 07:13

This is weird, right? I've just seen Jodie Comer trending on Twitter and I wondered why, it genuinely seems to be people being upset at her for 1. Being straight and 2. Dating someone who supports Trump.

Is this is a US vs UK thing because Politics really isn't as big of a deal here? WTF is going on?

If he's an outspoken Trump supporter, then I understand the vitriol as it's more than politics, Trump doesn't just believe in, say, small government, that's political, he openly believes women and BAME people are less than him, that's beyond politics, we can question any person who supports someone like that as we do those who support Tommy Robinson.

If he's just a republican, then no, that's not fair.

FortunesFave · 08/07/2020 08:24

Cancelling means more than online shaming. It means people actively unfollow and unsubscribe which hurts some people's income.

narrowboatgirl · 08/07/2020 08:26

I’ve never heard of him before this thread, but from the linked Twitter threads the evidence of him being a Trump supporter is that he follows Trump on Twitter, and they found an old voting record that shows he was registered Republican.

It’s a stretch to assume Trump supporter. Hell, many anti-Trumps registered as Republican so they could try to vote Trump out during primaries. He could be of course, but those two screencaps aren’t the proof they think it is.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 08/07/2020 08:27

Didn’t anyone get the memo it’s 2020 where no one is allowed a different opinion to your own!

IcedPurple · 08/07/2020 08:29

Jodie Comer is very good at pretending to be other people, which is what she does for a living. But why is her opinion on anything other than her work more important than that of say, a teacher or a bus driver? I don't understand people who put celebrities on a pedestal and then get all butthurt when they don't express the 'right' opinions. Actresses, models, football players etc are no more intelligent or well-informed than the average person on the street. Sometimes a lot less so.

Frozenfrogs86 · 08/07/2020 08:30

Lol at politics isn’t a big deal here Confused What planet are you living on? I would be unimpressed by someone dating a Trump supporter. I would question everything else about them as my view is that any thinking person would think he was deranged.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 08/07/2020 08:30

Jesus, DH voted leave, I voted remain, we managed to stay together but now it seems I’d be better off just cancelling him, a obviously he must be some sort of racist arsehole!

Frozenfrogs86 · 08/07/2020 08:31

I don’t believe in abusing people online for any reason or trying to stop them do their job, unless it’s directly related.

narrowboatgirl · 08/07/2020 08:32

But there’s no evidence that he’s a Trump supporter.

And they don’t really care about his politics, they’d invent an excuse to be outraged over any man she dated because they can’t accept that she likes men.

nettie434 · 08/07/2020 08:37

@MonsteraCheeseplant

So in America no one dates or mingles with people of different political views? Really? Seems unlikely. Maybe Twitter has just jumped the shark, it seems so far removed from reality.
It is unbelievable but true. I have seen a few people on Twitter express similar ideas here.

So cancel culture is wrong unless the person cancelled is dating someone you really don't like?

We can all make a case as to why the people whose views we oppose have harmful views, just see all the 'Tories kill people' views, or Labour will destroy the economy views.
Clearly the only sensible road to take is to debate with people on their views, not 'cancel' or harass or shame them for having those views - or in this case - dating someone with those views. The idea that you should not even associate with someone with views you don't' like is really pernicious.

Beebeet · 08/07/2020 08:39

because they can’t accept that she likes men

Probably true.

Krong · 08/07/2020 08:41

You are the sum of the 5 people you spend most time with.

I wouldn't be friends with a Trump supporter, I don't want to be friends with people whose ethics and morals are so far from mine.

PareidoliaNephophile · 08/07/2020 08:42

Good Lord - went down the rabbit hole - so some stans have basically been cyber stalking and gone through this guy's history for any dirt to create a pile-on. That's creepy as.

Rhine · 08/07/2020 08:43

@ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal

They're probably very jealous because she's beautiful and one of the most talented actresses to rise to fame in a very long time. I couldn't care less who she is dating or not. She's entitled to a private life. The daily mail was taking photos of her at the supermarket recently. I mean who gives a shit what jodie comer wears to the supermarket?
I felt quite uncomfortable seeing those photos because she strikes me as being quite private and well, normal. She’s not someone who courts the media at all so that felt quite intrusive to me.
MonsteraCheeseplant · 08/07/2020 08:44

@Frozenfrogs86 I didn't say politics isn't important in the UK but it doesn't seem to be on the same widespread level as in the US. I know plenty of people who are friends/relatives/partners etc of people who vote differently from them. Frankly it's nuts to do otherwise.

Blimey! The amount of online stalking people will do of a TV star is scary. Aside from how ridiculous their claims about her boyfriend are (he has an American flag in his bio! He liked 2 tweets by Mitt Romney!....well let’s just stick him on the wall for crimes against wokeness), the sense of ownership random Twitter strangers have over Jodie Comer‘s love life is so creepy.

cloud1183 · 08/07/2020 08:45

Unfortunately for Jodie this is often the price of being famous- people seem to think they have a right to deprive famous people of privacy. She seems a very private person and still lives with her parents in Liverpool so doesn’t chase the ‘celebrity’ lifestyle so I do feel sorry that she’s having to deal with this

Mumoblue · 08/07/2020 08:45

@BonosSigh

I mean, it is different.

"I would never date a Tory" is different from "YOU are dating a person with [X] political views and are now cancelled".

In regards to the OP. I don't know who that person is anyway. I think it's a bit weird to check the politics of people who are dating other people, but if you say that you cant dislike a celebrity for X or Y reason then you're just doing the same thing as people who say you cant LIKE them for X or Y reason.

jessstan2 · 08/07/2020 08:48

I don't know who Jodie Corner is.

The US is far more political than here. I wouldn't fancy a Trump supporter but it's up to her who she dates and anyway, people change, especially when they are young.

JemimaShore · 08/07/2020 08:48

Twitter is weirdly powerful. A few years ago, before it went truly crazy, I remember commenting to DH that it gave people extraordinary access to famous people - including stars and MPs etc - which they had never really had before.

Now it seems to have gone a step further - people seem to think they have some sort of 'ownership' of them. Like JK Rowling - sends a few tweets and has the whole Harry Potter fandom & twitter in meltdown.

Cancelling can be really serious - they do more than just stop being a fan. They actively try to get the person fired/stop that person getting any future work. It's happened to quite a few people - a couple of years back, it would happen to say, people who had committed serious crimes (Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey) but now it can just be having the "wrong" opinion about something. Or in this case, dating someone they don't approve of.

AsMuchUseAsAMarzipanDildo · 08/07/2020 08:48

Didn’t anyone get the memo it’s 2020 where no one is allowed a different opinion to your own!

Just waiting for someone to start screaming “Jodie’s choice of boyfriend is LITERAL VIOLENCE!!! against my feelings”

Justanotherlurker · 08/07/2020 08:48

There is being some backlash now on this cancel culture so I expect a lot of those who are trying to see nuance and justify why cancelling someone because they happen to be dating someone with the 'wrong' kind of political opinion is justified will have to rethink their stance soon

Twitter is insane. That embedded link in your first link, with the thread of evidence about the bf - "here's his dad's twitter - it has a US flag, which is in bad taste..." Are people seriously 3 years old? I have also met Mitt Romney (it's kind of hard not to) - cancel me now!! - and he's fairly centrist for a Republican - he was Governor of Massachusetts, FFS! I know lots of "never Trumpers" who support him.

There WAS a "thing", though, right after the 2016 US election, where women were urged not to date Trump supporters/voters and there was a lot of discussion about putting that info in online dating profiles, etc. I thought it had died down since the world didn't end with Trump's election - but with a new election coming it may become de rigeur again.
