If you live by the sea in the UK, where do you live?

And would you recommend it?

There are possible life changes ahead, and I could fulfil my dream of living by the sea.

I don’t want to end up in a holiday resort, though.

Any suggestions would be most welcome. TIA

I'll wave at you over the Solent Llamazoom

emmetgirl · 06/07/2020 22:40

Penzance in Cornwall- wonderful place!

Llamazoom · 06/07/2020 22:41

@RufustheRowlingReindeer As did I as a child with my parents, I believe it was started by a Bunn in the 1950’s, it has been owned and run by various members of the Bunn family until last year when it was sold according to rumour a ‘huge American corporation’ nobody quite knows who they are though 😂

Llamazoom · 06/07/2020 22:43

@elephantoverthehill on a clear day I could probably see you waving! Selsey old timers claim to have been able to walk to the Isle of Wight at low tide, I have no idea if this is true, I wouldn’t like to try it.

Or am I getting mixed up

I grew up in the East Neuk of Fife and being by the sea played a big part in my childhood. When I moved for uni I used to get terrible headaches for the first week of every term that I put down to the lack of sea air!

I now live a little outside that small area of fishing villages but can still see the sea im the distance from our current home and can be at a couple of cracking beaches in 10 minutes in the car..

Lollypop4 · 06/07/2020 22:51

Pembrokeshire.
Its a beautiful place to live in every aspect, we are north of county so a lot less tourists than Tenby for example

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 06/07/2020 22:53

Found it

Obviously this must have gone to extra time 😀

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 06/07/2020 22:54

Brighton. We sacrificed a garden to live 5 minutes from the beach. It's an amazing place to bring up kids, so much wholesome stuff for them to get into, beach volleyball, lagoon water sports.

The city centre is vibrant has a lot going on, great restaurants. The beautiful South Downs is 10 miles away with fantastic walks.

London is less than an hour away by train. Generally decent, open minded, eco conscious people live here too. No homophobia etc. Can't imagine being anywhere else.

Lollypop4 · 06/07/2020 22:54

@OohKittens

Pembrokeshire here also (below the landsker line) it is lovely here and I can't imagine ever living in a city but only a handful of the beaches have dog bans.
pembs here to north of the county!
DoTheNextRightThing · 06/07/2020 22:55

I live on the Ayrshire coast in Scotland.

Positives: can go to the beach anytime, lots of places to get ice cream, gorgeous sunsets, many swans.

Negatives: it's windy ALL the time, we do have problems with mobs of tourists/teenagers at the beach during the summer, it's not the prettiest beach in the world.

Lollypop4 · 06/07/2020 22:57

@Heulog

Pembrokeshire. It's so beautiful in summer, and wild and windy and raw in winter. House prices are relatively cheap, but we have been stripped of a lot of maternity/scbu/paediatric healthcare in recent years.
Pembs here too, north of the county !
elephantoverthehill · 06/07/2020 23:00

Llamazoom I don't think you could walk to IW at low tide but there is an annual walk out to one of the Palmerston forts from the Island from St Helens. RufustheRowlingReindeer Yes there is an annual cricket match played, if I remember correctly it is off Bembridge.

PickAChew · 06/07/2020 23:03

See lots orlf recommendations for the North East Coast. It is lovely up here. I'm in Durham, so can be at the coast in minutes.

My family are in East Yorkshire parents are in a coastal village, now, but it really is the arse end of nowhere and will probably have completely fallen into the sea in 100 years time.

I've only spent a few years of my life not in spitting distance of the coast and really missed it.

Gordonsgrin · 06/07/2020 23:04

Hello to fellow Welshies, Carms/Pembs border here. Llansteffan, Ginst Point and Amroth are my fav haunts.

We were in blyth and Whitley Bay last week and their beaches are gorgeous too

Could you give us more info on what you need in an area?

Gordonsgrin · 07/07/2020 00:10
