If you live by the sea in the UK, where do you live?

And would you recommend it?

There are possible life changes ahead, and I could fulfil my dream of living by the sea.

I don’t want to end up in a holiday resort, though.

Any suggestions would be most welcome. TIA

Sunderland, North East. We have fantastic beaches here and property is relatively cheap.

Right on the southcoast

Pretty much as far as you can go without hitting the Isle of Wight

In-between the cities of southampton and portsmouth

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 05/07/2020 23:38

Looks a bit like this

There are sandy beaches chichester/hayling island way

More beautiful pics!

What is the rest of life like? Shops, facilities etc?

I don’t have to worry about schools, but is life where you are good?

Sorry, OP - I don't live by the sea, but I'm finding the photos on this thread very therapeutic so I'm placemaking anyway!

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 05/07/2020 23:45

Village shops, doctor etc

We have everything but...property is on the expensive side as we are in the south and the doctors before lockdown was well busy. 6 weeks plus for appointments

Other villages nearby and two small towns, cities are about 20 miles away, lots of history

I can’t imagine not living close to the sea

Noworrieshere · 05/07/2020 23:49

Edinburgh. 5 minute walk from the beach, 20 minute bus ride from city centre.

@RufustheRowlingReindeer you live very very close to where I grew up! I’m a couple of hours away in north Wiltshire now, but I loved growing up in the Navel town down there. A lot of my childhood classrooms overlooked the beach and the Isle of Wight. I tell my children that I used to live 5 mins from the beach, and they can hardly believe it. They think it must have been like heaven!

LunaNorth · 05/07/2020 23:51

@LonginesPrime welcome to the thread. Gorgeous pictures aren’t they?

South east Cornwall for me. Close to Plymouth just over the bridge and the coast and Dartmoor.

west cumbria. Minutes away from the seaside, 10 minutes to the lake district, high wages and low cost of living. Bliss!

hotstepper4 · 05/07/2020 23:58

Brighton. Lived here my whole life. Used to be beautiful and alternative. Is now seedy and dirty 😔

Hedgesfullofbirds · 05/07/2020 23:59

Somerset - 20 minutes from Watchet and half an hour from Minehead, which is lovely, if you ignore Butlins. Fished off the beach there last night - virtually deserted, watched the sun go down and the big, beautiful full moon rise

@Macca84 I don’t know Cumbria all that well, apart from the Lakes. Is there anywhere you’d particularly recommend?

I live near Barry island
It has its flaws but there are lots of cool things and there is a lot of new cool things being built

WhenCoronaWasALager · 06/07/2020 00:07

Flowers OP. Hope you find somewhere nice.

Depends what your after op

I live in Warkworth and I love it. Amble is busier. Loads of villages and towns in the north east. The beaches are beautiful and never packed. Really depends on your lifestyle and what you'd like

thaegumathteth · 06/07/2020 00:22

I've lived on the Northumberland coast and now live on the east of Scotland coast . I would truly hate living somewhere that we couldn't get to a beach In a few minutes.

A few years ago we went on holiday to middle England and there were no nearby beaches and we really really missed them.

FannyFernackerpan · 06/07/2020 00:28

I have never lived more than 10 miles from the sea and have twice lived virtually on the beach in two different villages in North Wales - both spectacular. I also lived and worked in Marseilles close to a good beach. Currently live in a seaside town on England's south coast. Beach isn't a patch on the ones back in Wales but there's a lovely Victorian prom and you still get all sights, sounds and briny smells. I could never live very far away from the sea, wherever I was in the world.

tywysoges · 06/07/2020 00:38

Vale of Glamorgan here. We love it, moved from the SE a couple of years ago. No facilities apart from the village shop, but nearest town is only 5 miles away and it’s pretty good for doctors (including a hospital), restaurants, shops... and not too far from Cardiff either. Beaches are only sandy when the tide is low though.
