If you live by the sea in the UK, where do you live?

And would you recommend it?

There are possible life changes ahead, and I could fulfil my dream of living by the sea.

I don’t want to end up in a holiday resort, though.

Any suggestions would be most welcome. TIA

@LunaNorth

I’ve been looking at Amble just now. Is it as nice as it looks?

We’re going on holiday to Warkworth for a week in August, all being well, so we’ll use it as a fact-finding mission.

Sorry to hear about your mum @LunaNorth Flowers

Warkworth is a lovely little town. The beach is at the north end of the town down a path. Northumberland has stunning beaches, and there are loads of places worth visiting. Alnmouth is very pretty, and the beach has opportunities for rock pooling when the tide is out. There is a lovely little nature reserve with bird hides at Hauxley, and if you like looking at gardens it is worth joining the National Trust and visiting Cragside and Wallington. You need to book at the moment due to the pandemic, but they are open.

Alnwick Gardens are still closed at the moment, but things might change before you come up here. Morpeth is a pretty market town that has a lot to offer - IMO more than Alnwick in terms of shopping. There is also a lovely little park by the river.

I forgot to say that Amble used to be based on fishing, but they have built a new marina and it is now very much up and coming, and is worth a visit. The main street was pretty rowdy on Saturday night when the pubs opened.

I don't live by the sea but would love to!

Really enjoying this thread :)

TimeIhadaNameChange · 06/07/2020 10:37

Isle of Skye. Have a beach 5 min walk away.

Hopingtobeamum · 06/07/2020 10:46

Used to live in Sandbanks and Lilliput. Hubbie and I have decided to up sticks and head back there now our jobs have changed and we're working from home most of the week.
It's pricey but I love it and it's only a couple of hours from London so easily commutable two days a week.
Not looking forward to the price tag though but sod it!

TARSCOUT · 06/07/2020 10:51

Sorry about your mum OP.

Living with a sea view is the only thing I have ever wanted in life. You go for your dream!

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 06/07/2020 10:56

SE Cornwall. Beach 10 mins walk.
My neighbourhood is not touristy at all, but we're close to areas that get relatively busy in the summer.

But the rest of the year makes up for it (even though there is not a huge choice of cultural activities/restaurants etc out of season).

West Wales. It has many moods! These three all taken within walking distance or a short drive from home.

Does living by the sea have any adverse affects on the structure of your house or your car?

Chipsahoy · 06/07/2020 11:27

We are going to make the mood. I want sea, Dh wants countryside, so we are going for east or north yorkshire. Looking to be about half hr from coast. Currently doing the house up, looking to sell after Christmas!
You only live once. Go for it op

sophsweet · 06/07/2020 11:29

I live in Falmouth, Cornwall. Vibrant all year round thanks to student contribution to local economy and great arts, music and social community. Beaches, swimming and walks.

superram · 06/07/2020 11:34

I’m originally from the ne (mentioned by pp). Currently live in London but would love to live by the sea. Looking at Kent but as family still in ne it’s a possibility. The only thing putting me off is the weather. It’s 7° colder there than in London today (and often a lot more). I’m no longer a hard northern lass and always take a jacket on a night out-would I be cold and miserable if I moved back?

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 06/07/2020 11:41

arnold

I think it does to houses on the front right next to the sea, but not as you move to the roads behind

And certainly not 7/8 minutes walk away which is where i am

WannabeJolie · 06/07/2020 11:42

@Ginfordinner I’m so envious of where you live. It’s truly a beautiful county.

DivisionBelles · 06/07/2020 12:00

North Cornwall. This beach is about a 20 minutes drive away.

RhodaCamel · 06/07/2020 12:04

I live on the North East Essex Coast.

Wotrewelookinat · 06/07/2020 12:04

East suffolk coast, some touristy areas (Aldeburgh, Southwold), but other completely empty parts. Moved here from a city a few years ago and love it.

Papergirl1968 · 06/07/2020 12:33

I had a thread called coastal properties in property/DIY a few days ago. Sorry I can’t do links but it debated living on the seafront v a few streets back.
Arnold, having lived all my life in the Midlands, I think I’d still be minded to go for a sea view if possible despite the possible damage to the house and car.

BoxAndKnife · 06/07/2020 12:40

@FreezerBird, is that Aber? Sorry, I can't see the pic very well! Such happy, happy memories for me of that lovely place.

LunaNorth · 06/07/2020 12:43

I adore Suffolk, and North Norfolk, so that’s another possibility.

I really do want to be within easy walking distance of the sea. I live about 40 mins drive away from the East Yorkshire coast at the moment, but even with the best intentions, I hardly ever make it.

Devon, close to several beaches and many more within an hour's drive. It's glorious, we tend to avoid the very touristy beaches in peak season. It's lovely to bring the kids up near the coast, yesterday we watched porpoises and a seal! It's also great to get to the moors too.

weepingwillow22 · 06/07/2020 12:54

I used to live here and it was lovely. Very little employment outside retail/hospitality though which was why I left.

bigbluebus · 06/07/2020 13:01

As you drive through Rutland there is actually a brown sign for 'the beach' (on Rutland water)

I'd love to retire to the coast. We have lived in an inland county for nearly 30 years but I was brought up in a N Wales coastal town. Don't know if I'd actually retire there though - it's very touristy. DH has relatives on N Norfolk coast and multiple friends in North East so either of those are a possibility. I'd prefer the town/city and coast combo whereas DH is a country boy.

BighouseLittlemouse · 06/07/2020 13:01

@superram Grin I’m exactly the same as you. Have got used to being able to rely on some warmth in summer and now feel cold when I head back home to the NE ( beautiful as it is). I think I’d miss the summer heat too much now ( and I don’t even particularly like the heat!), particularly the warm spring/early summer.
