I used to know a yellow Labrador called Briggs. Admittedly, that was the name on the tag on his collar so was most likely the name of his family. But it seemed to suit him ( as far as I was concerned) so he was always Briggs to me, whatever his actual name may have been. If I ever have a male yellow Labrador, he will be called Briggs.

I love it when people give animals "people names". I find it so funny. There was a program when I was a kid where a family had a whole herd of dogs and the dogs were all called names like Gary, Paul, Jane...

My brother wanted to call his cats FC (fucking cat) and AFC (another fucking cat) 😁
Our adopted cat was a mix of gingery brown and cream which looked like marmite spread on butter so we called him marmite.
Friends dog is called Dave.

In the early 80s I knew a cat called Bosie, smart black and white, looked like he had a bow tie. Short for Reginald BosenCAT After Reginald Bosenquet the ITN newsreader of the time.
As a child my friend had a Siamese cat called Ming (was very precious) and a sausage dog Candy. Another had a sausage dog called Fritz.

I know a couple of horses called Dave and a Rodney Trotter, a beautiful French poodle called Sacha, and a pair of dogs not sure of breed but think they're siblings/related, Basil & Sibyl (Fawlty Towers).

OrlandoInTheWilderness · 05/07/2020 10:43

I had a lurcher called Dave. We also had a cat called Fish and another called Malcolm (female cat!).

Also my 2 Russian hamsters were Trotsky and Lenin and my mice were Wolfgang and Amadeus. I was a strange child.

Also had a horse called Ernest and another called Dude.

I met two dogs in the pub once, Barky and Dog Face. Apparently the children named them.
I also knew an afghan hound called Malibu Stacey.

Polkadotties · 05/07/2020 10:59

I love human names for animals. My horse is called Paddy which isn’t very original. I knew a horse called Colin

Great names, poor Oreo was somewhat short changed though!

The names were chosen by students by popular vote.

Oreo looked so much like an Oreo it was impossible to call her anything else.

If we get guinea pigs they will be Armadillo and Cedric.

I used to frequent a pub called The Crooked Billet in my 20s, then it was a country pub where you could always get an after hours drink from the landlord, Nobby. The cellar was just down some steps and he'd often get you to help yourself and pop the money in the tin. He would sit in his chair by the fire and tell tales of old - his family had owned the pub and he'd lived in the village forever (he was quite old). He had 2 cats, Mild & Bitter that always found their way over of an evening invariably to sit your lap.

Said pub is now a well known gastropub owned by a restauranteur, and altered somewhat.

ChetChet · 05/07/2020 13:24

Kick the cat!! Oh you horrid, horrid person GrinGrin

Brigante9 · 05/07/2020 13:32

@WildRosie
Bizarre, my dog was Brig, hence my username. He died last year at 16.

One of my current dogs is officially Zak, but more often puss cat, due to the way he pounces on things.

There's a cocker spaniel near us called Gus, and his owner informed me when we first met that it was short for Augustus John.

I used to volunteer in a shelter and we had a sausage dog named Savaloy. Was very cute. I have also seen these goats in a local shelter

I wanted, and still want cats - one called Tickle And one called Tess. Mum refused when she realised what would happen if she called Tess first. I was gutted!

LittleMissnotLittleMrs · 05/07/2020 14:39

@Bells3032 why does the goat have 3 completely different names??

mogloveseggs · 05/07/2020 14:39

The cat has a proper name but is known as the mountain lion which is a piss take by dh as the cat is small and makes no noise hardly when he meows
The hamster is Ham solo

FizzyGreenWater · 05/07/2020 14:42

A cat that was called FOP, but it stood for Fear Of Pyrex because when it was kitten and they'd just got it someone smashed a pyrex dish on the kitchen floor and the kitten hid for days!

But Fop is a good cat name anyway though.

Bells3032 · 05/07/2020 14:42

@littlemissnotlittlemrs I think it's three goats they just used the same photos. Was a farm that went bankrupt
