What is the best or most original name you have known for a family pet or other animal?

I used to know a yellow Labrador called Briggs. Admittedly, that was the name on the tag on his collar so was most likely the name of his family. But it seemed to suit him ( as far as I was concerned) so he was always Briggs to me, whatever his actual name may have been. If I ever have a male yellow Labrador, he will be called Briggs.

@Cathpot

Allowed the kids to name the fish in the pond. They include Harmonious Quibble and Vulgar Display of Power.
@Cathpot Your kids aren't fans of the great Iain M Banks are they? Because that's the sort of name he used to give to the ships in his Culture novels

Fuck it. I’ve got a girl cat called Purcival Edward Fortescue Smythe III due to the fact that In 2011 I overheard a woman talking loudly on the phone with a faux lisp and really high pitched voice mention her cat (a lot), poor cat was called Mrs Furry Fluffer Whiskerson and I moaned to my husband about people giving animals cruel names so he said if we ever had a cat it would have to have an even more ridiculous name. It suits her though as she’s very majestic. We also have a round Labrador called Johnny B Goode, this was so when he was misbehaving we could say “Johnny! Be good”.

My cats over the years so far have been...
Portia, Morpheus, Ophelia and Oberon Grin
Posh MaineCoons so needed posh names!

(to be fair Portia probably thought her name was 'fuckoffportia' as she was very demanding and lived til she was 19 :D )

Oh and before the MCs I had two moggies called Kissyfur and Dufas !

Cornetto69 · 05/07/2020 01:28

Loki (a black cat) He belongs to my friend. It suits him. He is gorgeous but has a habit of killing the wild baby bunnies that come into the garden. So I refer to him as Loki the Bunny Slayer

Puffmais (guinea pig)- German for popcorn and guinea pigs are well known for doign somethign known as popcorning- when they are happy they jump up in the air (like popcorn in a pan of hot oil, I guess). My friend who owned the guinea pig comes from a German Jewish family and wanted an unusual name for her new piggy. Her dad saw him popcorning on my friend's bed and said "what about Puffmais?"

Maine Coons are the best cat. They rock. My friend has one named Colin- he is ginger, huge and has a tail like an orange feather duster. He is very purry. I love a cat with a big purr. Love purry guinea pigs too! I have 3 of them!

Some literary puns from an American blogger whose name I can't remember, but I can remember her pets names.
A beautiful little dog called Dorothy Barker, and a cat called Hunter S Tomcat.
I also know that Paula Yates (RIP, bless her) had a cat called Rowdy Yates. (Clint Eastwood's character in Bonanza - one for the teenagers Wink).

@70isaLimitNotaTarget

We had 8 guinea-pigs over 8 years ,,,,the most noteable one (and had to be my DD favourite) was "Bert" .

Bert was without doubt as thick as mince but lovely with it .

We re-name all our animals , even if we know their original names .
They have a new name for their new life .

The best guinea pig name I heard was my niece's one called Wilbur.
ErrmWTAF · 05/07/2020 04:45

I used to know somebody who named his dog Beelzebub, so he could yell it across the fields and freak out his [overly, he felt] religious neighbours.

@MrsSnitchnose nope, I'm south east. Our Gary down here is a Yorkshire terrier with an awful haircut, which somehow makes its funnier.

@NotYourDawg 😆 I must admit it took me longer than it should have to figure out the name Deefer.

Flossingisforteeth · 05/07/2020 07:19

Landlady had Ronnie and Reggie, both beagles, which everyone reacted to as somewhat shocking - I never understood why as a child!

SierraHotel · 05/07/2020 07:21
