Now dad's out of hospital mum is looking forward to a trip into town next week for his hearing test. She is expecting a nice mooch round the shops and to pop into the cathedral cafe for lunch. When I pointed out that it might not be open and she might need to book in advance She was quite taken aback and just insisted there's never a problem getting a table. I take the view that that at 82 and 93 they are entitled to go out if they feel up to it but I can't help but worry they will get very confused. They have only been to the corner shop and Boots for off the peg glasses since March.

Orangeblossom78 · 03/07/2020 11:30

I'd far rather die of covid at 80 than live for 15 more years with a stroke or dementia, and the costs of that care falling to my DCs. I'd rather leave them a home. To be frank.

Paradiseinportugal · 03/07/2020 11:31

Bubble you're not a weirdo at all! A big red button has no business being in public sight. And sign saying Do Not Press is just asking for it imho grin
As others have said Bubble, if you're a weirdo so am I, I'd be pressing that big red button too.
I've read about the non air bridge in Wales and Scotland. If I'm able to fly back, I'll fly into Bristol and drive straight to my home in the Brecon Beacons.
Where's the no go village close to the English border? I can't remember who posted that.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 03/07/2020 11:33

My gran was forever being admonished for her diet of b&h, gin, Valium and “freezer meals” by well-meaning medics. She felt being 80+ she’d consume whatever she damn well fancied.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 03/07/2020 11:34

Is wanting to press the red button like getting cold sweats and “acting casual” whilst walking through the nothing to declare channel?

Theveryhungrymum · 03/07/2020 11:35

Delurking finally, you wonderful people have kept me sane for the last few months, these threads are a becon of sanity in a sea of increasing hysteria Flowers I'm in the south west, in a smallish seaside town which seems to have forgotten that we rely heavily on tourism. Everyone including my own family appear to have lost their minds, I never thought I'd be the rational one! Every time I have a wobble I come back here and you all recomfirm it's defently them that are the strange ones Smile thankyou all!

Yes, yes, that's the feeling. Especially if you do have Nothing to declare.

I swear I do this every time. And every time I fly I get stopped somewhere along the way and I always feel guilty even though I'm never doing anything wrong.

Actually tell a lie I got told off in Barcelona airport for not taking my iPad out my bag. It was the anniversary of 9 11 and everyone was on edge I felt bloody awful!

Orangeblossom78 · 03/07/2020 11:37

Hi Hungrymum Flowers

Dowser · 03/07/2020 11:37

@ibake and @BubbleIsNotAFuckingVerb

I’m a Dowser, that definitely puts me in the weirdo camp
We also muscle test..put food substances and other things on our solar plexus and hold out our right arm, while other one presses to see if you have an intolerance ( if arm stays strong you don’t..try it)
That makes us double weirdos

We are a bit woo
And yes, stupid rules are begging to be broken

Orangeblossom78 · 03/07/2020 11:39

Right, I am going to think of that saying 'we can't control what happens but only how we respond to it' so going to just say no to any situate I'm not happy with such as mask wearing in shops and just go online instead - might save some money too. If pubs etc are a nightmare will just oder nice takeaway instead of lave lovely picnics / fish and chips at the beach. So, still have treats but avoid the stress

Worldgonecrazy · 03/07/2020 11:40

I want to make it past 80 and stay healthy. So rather than stress about Covid I exercise and eat well, make sure I do everything within my power to avoid the bigger risks out there, such as obesity, heart disease, preventable cancers, etc. Locking oneself away to avoid Covid, seems to me to be increasing real risk and not reducing perceived risk.

Allflightscancelled · 03/07/2020 11:40

Living to 80 sounds good to me. That reminds me of a post before all of this about how many of us, would not like to live past 80 anyway

Having taken my 89 year old mother out to the shops yesterday, I'd have to agree. I always thought she was doing pretty well for her age, but seeing how frail, and doddery, and unable to function she has become, I agree that you can live too long. She can manage at home just fine, her house is immaculate. But sh can't see what she needs in the shops (won't wear glasses - too vain), is deaf as a post and struggles to manage even little things like paying by card. She's got anxious about everything when she used to be really calm and laid back. She's being super cautious about Covid despite no real health problems, avoiding crowds and wearing a mask. But part of me just thinks "what for?"

TheGreatWave · 03/07/2020 11:44

One of the door locks has broken, so rang a locksmith... "Emergencies... mutter, mutter, commercial.... mutter, mutter... social distancing... mutter, mutter.... next week"

I'll go somewhere else then. I'm just asking for a door to be fixed, not inviting you all round for a booze up in the house.

Spudlet · 03/07/2020 11:44

Hello lovelies, I lost you there. Just back from a jaunt to buy paint. Wickes are not mixing paint at the moment (why?!), so I trekked over to Homebase and got a nice young man (aside: when did I start referring to people as nice young men?! 👵🏻) to mix up my Sophisticated Sage and Vanilla Mist 4, and popped into Dunelm for some new cushions while I was at it. NYM also bemused at Wickes not mixing paint as he reckoned it was a good money-maker - I stood 2m away while he was doing the mixing and just about refrained from licking him to say thank you so I reckon we should all just about survive. Wickes’ loss is Homebase’s gain!

Came home to discover that DH, Mr Financial Caution himself, had experienced a rush of blood to the head and has ordered a tag along bike for the Mini-Spud. They’ve been going on bike rides throughout this and I think DH was really sad at the thought of DS outgrowing his bike seat, which is imminent - we already had to give the one from my bike away as Mini-Spud is more of a Midi-Spud these days. DH has already staked a firm claim to having it attached to his bike, as it is his new toy Grin I just hope DS likes it!

I have to agree with a PP - I’m all in favour of rules that make sense, but arbitrary ones irritate me. Like the paint mixing thing - if someone could explain how mixing paint poses a higher infection risk, I’d totally support it. But I can’t see how it does, and there’s nothing on the Wickes website to explain why - they’re just not doing it. For ‘safety’.

Anyway, I have my paint, and DH is happy because he has a shiny new toy coming, so it’s all good at Chez Spuds. Now I just have to motivate DH (and myself) to clear the living room so we can apply said paint. 👍

Fuck - school has decided to cancel the two trips they'd orginally postponed to next year. One abroad and one in UK.

The new govereners have been anti-trips for a while thinking seems to be as not all the school body can afford them they shouldn't be offered - but there always over subscribed as I think there's many parents like us who can't afford to go as families but can just afford the school trips paid over long perods.

So that four trips across all the children - two UK two aboard canceled and likely the course work trips for DD1 Y10 also cancelled.

DS scoutes haven't been doing camps but new leader was planning it this year which obvioulsy won't go ahead. I'm not sure Guides is even coming back as the group numbers were really low and the leaders very old and starting to talk about stopping.

This is so annoying - they are missing so much.

Dowser · 03/07/2020 11:46

@TrustTheGeneGenie
I had a half consumed pot of hummus taken off me at Newcastle airport two trips ago but my homeopathic remedy maker sailed through unchallenged
Weirdo that I am, I’m screaming inside, it might be a bomb, but normal human that I like to think I am, thinks thank the fuck for that

I take it every trip. It did get challenged on the homeward bound trip from Tenerife and I’m saying to myself, stupid woman when will you learn the Spanish for homeopathic remedy maker
I managed to croak out homopatie..and hope it sounded sufficiently Spanish, to which one or two of them smiled and repeated it back, thankfully and we were in our merry way

Still Have t learned the appropriate phrase
Next time I will be taking colloidal silver brewer but as it’s only silver rods, batteries , wires and clips it shouldn’t be too much of a problem for

Dowser · 03/07/2020 11:51

My son and his mates were the reasons why all school trips got cancelled at their school.

I mean who in their right minds let a group of 13 years old loose around Boulogne with fireworks freely on sale.
I mean disaster just waiting to happen.

I was horrified..I wouldn’t have even let let him out of my sight.

Dowser · 03/07/2020 11:53

@nannyphlegm
I was taught to question everything.

Orangeblossom78 · 03/07/2020 11:56

I think that might be something in the new school guidance - something about they can do non residential trips...

In ours they do this lovely thing with the new year 7s, they go to a school cottage (in Wales! well that will be off then) off grid, so no electric etc and they have to fend for themselves and cook etc in small groups. So they can get to know each other etc.

It's a lovely thing- we have a date for it already but feel pretty sure it might not be happening now. Maybe later in the year- I hope.

Allflightscancelled · 03/07/2020 11:57

On one trip to Spain the security people in Birmingham spent ages looking at (very roomy) handbag on their scanners. Eventually one said "Are you carrying a knife madam?" I laughed and said "A knife? Of course not!"

And then remembered my Swiss Army knife in the bottom of the bag.[embarrassed]. They weren't amused.

I've had many an eye rolled at me at karate because I question stupid (in my opinion) rules Grin

Like in kata, I'll question the relevance of a particular move. I get told that we do it 'because it's in the kata'. The conversation then goes like this :

Me: But what does it mean?
Instructor: It means that you have to do it.
Me: But why? It makes no sense.
Instructor: Because it's discipline, and it's in the kata, so that's why.
Me: But there must be a real reason.
Instructor: There is. put it in the kata, so you have to do it.
Me: Yes and I will do it, but I still don't understand why that move is in there, it doesn't make sense...
Instructor, visibly breathing smoke: LET'S MOVE ON!!

Maybe that's why we're all on these threads. Not the kata thing, that would be very weird and coincidental, but because we all question rules instinctively (while still following them for the most part )

Orangeblossom78 · 03/07/2020 12:03

I love hearing your stories Dowser

Positive news today- Times saying rates are steady www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/coronavirus-about-117-people-dying-each-day-as-deaths-remain-stable-0hz2pkgg6

and also less risk of more lockdowns in the North www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/coronavirus-declines-in-north-reduce-risk-of-new-local-lockdowns-x0sjtwx8b

Willitneverend · 03/07/2020 12:04

@Orangeblossom78 I was completely underwhelmed at that announcement yesterday. Does she think people have been making their primary school kids and toddlers socially distance for months? Absolutely mental.

Orangeblossom78 · 03/07/2020 12:04

I definitely think that is true that we tend to question rules whereas some seem to love to follow them and use them to beat others with.
Even hearing of rules etc makes me feel stressed and angry
