Wiltshire Council is anti Dementor yayy! The state of the nation that the statistic had to be explained to the hard of thinking.
What's that quote..... Lies, damned lies and statistics.

Welcome Mararunner. Make yourself at home

Shodan · 30/06/2020 20:25

Tsk @countrygirl99. One does not simply go to the beach, one flocks to the beach.

I've mostly been reading the stats/articles given by UsForThem on Facebook today, which I've found very comforting.

I went to Tesco today for some murdering, and was all ready to find it bossy in its social distancing measures, but it was actually ok, apart from relieving of me of twice my normal shopping money. But I did get a very cute little glass jar thing to add to my pretty glass bottle collection.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 30/06/2020 20:34

It was me who mentioned Alice Roberts on the last thread and I'm so relieved to know you all feel the same. I used to be such a fan of hers and have been so dismayed (understatement!) by her approach to other issues (cough, clownfish!) and this is just the final straw. Seriously, she's supposed to be very clever and very sensible and it's like her twitter account or her brain have been hijacked by a particularly unintelligent alien recently. It's hard watching your heroes be de-pedastalled (that's a word!).

But really - WE CANNOT ALL STAY IN FOREVER. It's damaging in so many ways. No one should be shamed for wanting to get back to living. Lots can't afford it and whilst making a sacrifice for the more vulnerable in society is a lovely thing up to a point, most can only do that for so long because the price you pay becomes too great.

And now I'm in a bad mood because we've been discussing Greece here and I can't just hop on a plane and go tomorrow and I'm craving it so much. You malakas Grin

Otherwise, I had a better day - I met up with a couple of friends and we sat far too close and breathed all over each other while eating cake. I feel increasingly like I have things in the diary and while it's not enough and I want more life, it's a big improvement on how things were a few weeks ago.

Mascotte · 30/06/2020 20:36

I'm fed up. DP seems quite happy for me to go on holiday by myself despite it being a (very) rare opportunity for time just the two of us. Bah!

Dowser · 30/06/2020 20:37

@LivinLaVidaLoki
What a sad story..can’t believe it in a western country.
All these tourism places That are just waiting for the plane loads to arrive..
It must be so hard.

Awww when a grandchild goes back home, it seems even emptier than it was before.
If I had my way..I’d round them all up and say this was their new home now.

If we all sold our houses and bought a big piece of land ( I’d get my other Dil involved too) so we could all have a nice house and plenty of garden, so we were in popping in distance..but not in each other’s pockets..and there’d be some help for when we are in Our dotage .

Ah, dream on.

PickAChew · 30/06/2020 20:37

This is the article. Produced pretty much word for word in all the online papers, so I picked the top one that wasn't the express!
metro.co.uk/2020/06/30/non-essential-shops-closed-today-leicester-12920228/

PickAChew · 30/06/2020 20:39

That was to @mararunner

Dowser · 30/06/2020 20:39

Does anyone think we will have something outdoorsy that we can visit
Apart from a national trust property, a golf course, a zoo..thinking of a music gig.

It must be a year now since we saw the levellers at piece hall.
Brilliant.

Blimey, it's insane isn't it!! Thanks PickAChew

NannyPhlegm · 30/06/2020 20:51

@Dowser Six The Musical announced today that they're holding drive-in live shows. So you drive in with your car and park in a designated rectangle, get out on one side, and then watch the live staging. Similar has been announced in London with a best-of-musicals theme.
If they can do it, I suppose music gigs can be back on too. Not the way they used to be, but it doesn't look totally impossible either

Supermarketworker06 · 30/06/2020 21:04
Ahhh, glad I've found you. I've been following the anti-dementor threads for a while, keeps me sane. Meanwhile, I give you this. I haven't seen the media that this mentions, but find it telling that Wiltshire Council put this statement up about it. www.wiltshire.gov.uk/news/articles/council-dismisses-lockdown-reports
Ooh which part of Wiltshire are you in? I keep reading that Swindon is the hotspot in this county but even so they don't have a lot of cases.

torydeathdrug · 30/06/2020 21:09

I'm actually seriously disturbed by the fact that the government can lockup a city of 300k people without being expected to produce anything to justify it (I want to see the actual up to date infection figures from a proper source - not a leak about what they might have been two weeks ago), let alone evidence the intervention is effective or be required to give a definite point when people can be released (infection rates? death rates? time period? hospital beds occupied?)

I thought indeterminate prison sentences were considered unacceptable nowadays!

Nihiloxica · 30/06/2020 21:11

Right, I'm moving to Witshire.

packs handkerchief on stick

justasking111 · 30/06/2020 21:12

Think they are locking up the city because going from house to house testing families and welding them in for 14 days is not in our psyche.

RubberDinghyRapids · 30/06/2020 21:13

DH and I were talking about the lack of clarity around this earlier. We did wonder if there was some relation to different groups (ie Asian) and therefore they weren't saying to reduce the risk of racist thugs taking it out on a specific community. Having read the comments on the local paper (can't remember who posted it, sorry) I can quite believe this. Some of the comments were horrible and unashamedly racist.

Bollss · 30/06/2020 21:15

I really don't like that they can lock up an entire city with no end date and just a vague "oh well see if we can release any measures in two weeks"

Are you shitting me. It's inhumane. We've been through this once.

Why can't they just test track and fucking trace and isolate? Because there's thousands of people stuck at home being punished for absolutely no reason at all now.

BogRollBOGOF · 30/06/2020 21:16

I was brewing up for a bad mood earlier, but my outdoor fitness class with real humans, female and unrelated has picked me back up again.

June 2020 is very, very close to pissing off for ever more.

I'm off to Leicestershire tomorrow to the zoo, zoo, zoo Grin

DS2's lovely teacher is trying to put together a whole class photo of little avatars of each of the children Halo
It's so sad that they only had half a year with him, but despite adjusting to FT with a new year group, he is still trying to keep a personal connection with the class.

TheOnlyMrsW · 30/06/2020 21:21

Have been lurking for a fair few threads now and keep meaning to post but then things move so quickly. Inspired by @Dowser mentioning The Levellers at the Piece Hall, we were there with DD14! Live music is our thing and I just can't see how we'll get it back......so much has been cancelled, postponed and the communities behind the scenes are just decimated.
I was fairly positive going into this week but the news about Leicester has knocked any confidence that the tide is turning, hugs for those struggling (it doesn't sound nearly enough I'm afraid)

Nihiloxica · 30/06/2020 21:23

Me too.

It's terrifying.

I would find that very credible. There might also be very localised variations in communities' engagement with protocols. I have heard reference to language barriers, and there is some pretty jargony language around at the moment. Plus people with limited fluency may not have access to their usual support networks.
justasking111 · 30/06/2020 21:23

According to comments made by a councillor in parts of Leicester getting people to understand hygiene, isolation is made very difficult by the language barrier. He said the youths that are congregating english is not their first language so they struggle so the older people will find it harder still. In Africa because of aids an army of volunteers who speak local dialects have been visiting homes for years about the disease. They have now retrained and are visiting to talk to and hand out leaflets to people about covid and it is working.

torydeathdrug · 30/06/2020 21:25

This was posted on the numbers thread, pillar 2 data for Leicester. They clearly have the numbers, why won’t they publish it properly with an explanation?

Also this stops at June 19th - surely what’s happened in the past ten days is fairly significant!

AD's say "well open the playgrounds and swimming pools then you Malaka"
RubberDinghyRapids · 30/06/2020 21:34

Yes, language barriers is something we wondered about. The govt did such a sterling job of terrifying the country, but that only works if you can understand the information given. I don't know the local demographics of the area (as previously discussed my lack of geographical knowledge is a source of great amusement to DH) but multi-generational households with some family members who don't have English as a first language will have an impact. Then add the rest of the family being more likely to be in either low income (like factory work) and/or healthcare.... just made food for thought.
The comments of that article were straight to accusations of mosques being used etc and not that people might be in jobs that would put them at higher risk etc. I could see why they might not want to identify any ethnic groups identified as having a notable spike.

PickAChew · 30/06/2020 21:36

That's the thing, justasking there must surely be community members who are respected and able to get the message out, providing they are given the resources to do so. It's pretty naive of TPTB, whether national or local government, to think that Chris Whitty muttering robotically with a pained expression on his face, or the longwinded leaflet sent out in English, by default, was ever going to get the message across to everyone.
