I’m not really buying the language barrier. As an expat I watched the bbc. In my experience, expats prioritise “home TV” and they’ll be watching tv and reading online newspapers. So unless we’re talking about the kiwis 😉 - everybody knows.

Dowser · 30/06/2020 21:45

@shodan
What my very talented friend makes for her shop

Her octopus is like her trademark

My NDN is an immigrant and has a satellite - it’s not hooked up to SKY - it’s tunes in for her home country networks. She knows damned well what’s going on.

RubberDinghyRapids · 30/06/2020 21:48

@InsaneInTheViralMembrane Fair point. My knowledge of different communities is shamefully woeful Blush (yes, yes, I know before you tell me to educate myself).

NannyPhlegm · 30/06/2020 21:51

Yes, the language barrier thing is a red herring. I am doing work right now that takes me into the heart of am ethnic minority community (an Eastern European one). Their "home" news channel is full of the pandemic.
Similarly, news channels from South Eastern Asia countries (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh etc) is wall to wall virus related.

Everyone knows

fartingsparkles · 30/06/2020 21:51

Re that statement from Wiltshire, I saw something very similar on fb from Wigan Council. The effect of irresponsible reporting and SM sharing.

thenightsky · 30/06/2020 21:51

Place marking or I'll lose you all tomorrow. Got to go into the office for the first time since March. Really excited to see fun work mates. No, really Grin

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 30/06/2020 21:51

I would never, ever shame anyone for anything like that. We know what we know through experience! Life must be terribly dull to have to dedicate it to understanding everything and everyone. 😁

It’s a weird phenomenon- people who could tell you the UK PM when they live in Basingstoke move to Zurich and are glued to the beeb!

justasking111 · 30/06/2020 21:52

My friends OH is italian he has a satellite dish in his garden and only watches italian tv, he is up to speed on covid. But he is well educated. I was reading there are some awful sweat shop factories in Leicester, how the hell in this day and age can employers get away with this, where are the inspectors, unions who allow people to be exploited in this way.

thenightsky · 30/06/2020 21:53

@Dowser

That is VERY steam punk!

Mrsfrumble · 30/06/2020 21:59

Place marking! My god, that AR twitter thread.... I can’t believe we’ve circled back round to “I don’t go out so neither should you”. It’s like Groundhog Day, back to mid-March.

justasking111 · 30/06/2020 22:00

It reminds me of a murano glass pendant I have. It is a lovely piece. @Dowser

RubberDinghyRapids · 30/06/2020 22:02

Hmmm, the more I think about it the more I think my thoughts were probably a fair bit racist in themselves Blush more reading and thinking to do....

Thank god for this thread. Open, respectful conversation. It's the culturally opposite of AIBU Smile

amicissimma · 30/06/2020 22:02

"Does anyone think we will have something outdoorsy that we can visit
Apart from a national trust property, a golf course, a zoo..thinking of a music gig."

When I click on the Metro link on the side I get an article saying that Aurora Lifestyle Festival won't be on: 'Sex festival won't go ahead because you can't social distance at orgies.'

Was that the kind of thing you had in mind?

After the Novichok incident I should think Wiltshire Public Health department is used to keeping a level head.

But surely the smartest thing would be to keep the public up to date on the total (all sources) positive tests in the area and then everyone would be aware and the vast sensible majority would know to take extra steps to avoid catching and spreading it until the numbers drop again - shop less frequently, avoid busy times, choose to stay in more, jump into the hedge when people approach, etc

HesterShaw1 · 30/06/2020 22:03

More on the Leicester garment factories...apparently they stayed open during lockdown, forced their workers to come in and there are allegations of furlough fraud.

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/jun/30/some-leicester-factories-stayed-open-and-forced-staff-to-come-in

RubberDinghyRapids · 30/06/2020 22:03

Dowser you have a very talented friend, great piece!

HesterShaw1 · 30/06/2020 22:06

If those allegations are true, it's a total scandal. It looks as though those working conditions have been an open secret for years.

One very good reason to take a stand against fast fashion, in my opinion :(

Willitneverend · 30/06/2020 22:07

Playground dementors ffs. Seems they ARE the bloody playground monitors. My kids have been going on them for about a fortnight now and none of us are sadly dead.

NothingIsWrong · 30/06/2020 22:08

Whoop! Hello all! Shitty long day here.

@MagdaS I also get people telling me they pay my wages. Often just after I've tried to explain the differing responsibilities of the district and county council. And as an employee of one, there is fuck all I can do about something that is the responsibility of the other beyond advising you to phone or write to them. And even if it is something that we ARE responsible for, it's highly unlikely to be my specialist area if you've just collared me on the street because I'm wearing staff ID.

justasking111 · 30/06/2020 22:10

@HesterShaw1 that article is shocking. Public health England, the council, are a shameful pair of blind eye turners. We need undercover workers and a panorama type expose. The council are turning a blind eye to landlords too I suspect.

Shodan · 30/06/2020 22:10

@Dowser That's lovely, your friend is very talented. I'd love to have a browse of her stuff.

I'm looking at taking ds2 to Wookey Hole and surrounding area for a couple of nights, in lieu of our cancelled holiday. He seems quite keen on the idea so that's positive. If ds1 can't make it I might splash out on a nicer-than-normal hotel.

justasking111 · 30/06/2020 22:20

I have only just noticed that Tui and First Choice have cancelled all holidays to Disney Florida. They think the new rules will put people off the disney experience.

Friends daughter is stuck in Miami with toddler and baby, lockdown came while they were sorting out dads estate. It is hell she says.

BogRollBOGOF · 30/06/2020 22:20

I was thinking more about specifics such as local access to testing and shielding advice rather than general awareness of a pandemic. Lack of access to services like schools and places of worship must be hindering some people. Poor working and living conditions would be very high risk for spread like the German hotspot.
BarkandCheese · 30/06/2020 22:21

Dowser I love your friend’s artwork, I’m a bit of an octopus fan myself.

RubberDinghyRapids · 30/06/2020 22:22

@HesterShaw1 I had the same thought whilst reading that re:fast fashion. Made me think of the MN middle-class disapproval of buying from Primark because of the risk posed to fellow shoppers, never mind the people actually making the clothes in some sweatshop somewhere else in the world. Going to look at Aisling Bea's Instagram again, she used to do some great posts on ethical fashion.
