How much would you pay for this shopping?

Weekly food shop done in M&S to feed a family of 2 adults, one child, one baby for a week. We already had basics like bread, milk, eggs and pasta.

Partner 1 thinks it's excessive

Partner 2 thinks it's a bargain

How much would you pay for this shopping?

If you can afford M&S why aren't you buying free range/organic chicken?

Her chicken was yellow sticker. Don't often find free range organic for a quid Smile

SapphosRock · 29/06/2020 15:08

Yep exactly midnightstar66 although even without the reduction the chicken thighs are only £2 for a pack of 5.

The chicken all needs eating today, already made a 3-4 portion curry to freeze, 3 portion lemon and olive chicken to freeze and now doing a 6 portion coq au vin as we have some cheap cooking wine.

12+ meals from £5.50 worth of chicken is pretty good I thought. You'd pay that for one small packet of organic thighs at Waitrose or Ocado.

Definitely under £50. Those chicken thighs are only about £1.50 a pack at the moment.

PickAChew · 29/06/2020 15:17

I much prefer it when they sell their broccoli loose. The packaged stuff always sweats and I'm more likely to just take off what I want for a meal for 2 of us, then chuck the middle away because it's gone mushy.

Wobblywibblywoo · 29/06/2020 15:39

£45 - £55

Redroses05 · 29/06/2020 15:58

@Xmasbaby11

£60?

It's not a week's worth of food!

You can’t get a weeks food in M&S for £60. The quality is fab though definitely worth the money. I don’t use a corner shop or order many takeaways so I don’t mind paying M&S prices.
Comefromaway · 29/06/2020 16:01

£40-50 (but probably more in M & S)

SapphosRock · 29/06/2020 16:01

PickAChew me too. They didn't have any loose broccoli today or loose tomatoes.

You can’t get a weeks food in M&S for £60.

I reckon you could with a bit of careful planning but it wouldn't include stuff like loo roll or tea bags (which we buy from Poundland)

I'm up for the challenge Grin

In m and a I think that would be around £60. I can’t afford M and S, I would pay about £40 for similar items in Tesco going for wonky veg etc.

Redroses05 · 29/06/2020 16:14

I doubt it. I shop in there for my weekend bits. There’s less of us though. If you could get a weeks shop in M&S I would do it regularly if that’s all it was £60. I find the portions are smaller for the extra money you pay. Still worth it though.

passthemustard · 29/06/2020 16:19

Absolute bargain!

I shopped at Sainsbury's yesterday, didn't buy anything for main meals as I managed to find ingredients for 7 meals out of the freezer and cupboard - so I was only going for basics, bread, milk, eggs cheese yogurt etc, juice, snacks crisps biscuits, I got some washing powder and fabric softener and some dog food for 2 dogs plus fresh fresh fruit and veg.

Spent £105 🤦🏼‍♀️

This was for 6

Redroses05 · 29/06/2020 16:23

@passthemustard I find Sainsburys so over priced I don’t know how anybody shops in their. They never have offers on. I think it’s literally like shopping in Waitrose.

ToothFairyNemesis · 29/06/2020 16:25

£40

luminette · 29/06/2020 16:27

That’s a lot of chicken...

ToothFairyNemesis · 29/06/2020 16:27

£57.54 that’s not a bargain, and even with the items you mentioned there isn’t really enough food for a week.

ssd · 29/06/2020 16:31

Decent

MotherMorph · 29/06/2020 16:39

Its rarely mentioned but I think the co-op is really expensive! Our co-op has very few own brand products and is way more expensive than sainsburys and tesco. (I imagine it would give m and s, or waitrose on prices but I dont shop in either of those often enough to make a direct comparison)
I bought a jar of (branded)mayonnaise in the coop for 2.20 the other day the same brand as i normally get from tesco (tesco seems to have stopped doing jars of own brand mayo). The tesco one was 2.50 for 600g, compared with coop 2.20 for 400g.

AllStartedWithUSA · 29/06/2020 16:47

It’s decent but all the yellow tickets make it cheaper so isn’t really comparable with a regular shop!

I agree re sainsburys. Use to be my go to place but last time I did a full shop there it cost me a fortune!

Redroses05 · 29/06/2020 16:50

Co-op is pricey too I agree although I think of it as a corner shop.

Hollyhobbi · 29/06/2020 16:56

@BiddyPop I think amount of food would be about €140 in M & S in Dublin! I'm cocooning but really miss their lemon pastry thingy for €1.60 I think it costs, and their bread which is about all I'd get there along with the occasional dine in offers! And there were never many yellow sticker reductions anytime I was in there.

Boomclaps · 29/06/2020 16:59

Yes that is good value

BiddyPop · 29/06/2020 17:06

@Hollyhobbi I tend to pop into Grafton St rather than Henry St, and often pick up yellow stickers there. Not all the time, but Mondays and Tuesdays can be good after weekend offers some weeks, and generally veg etc too. Then again, there are many days that they have nothing at all of what you're looking for, let alone yellow stickered. So it can be hit and miss.

movealongnothingheretogawpat · 29/06/2020 17:18

£68?

ElaineMarieBenes · 29/06/2020 17:28

Bargain!
