I can hear nothing but sirens from my flat.

Have read that it appears to be a terrorist attack, but not confirmed. At least 3 dead. Glasgow city centre. Just awful Sad

If you think that makes me racist, to be pissed off that someone who came here for their safety then decided to murder 3 innocent people in broad daylight in my town last week, then I’m fine with that

Punkatheart · 26/06/2020 19:10

Good points, mbosnz.

RJnomore1 · 26/06/2020 19:10

Sad thing is I’m certain you are.

YankeeinKingArthursCourt · 26/06/2020 19:12

@Nixen

To be fair, I do not think anyone has been "justifying" these actions, simply trying to understand the context of the situation. This is what people in law enforcement and the judicial system do everyday.

I would characterise your comments as leaning heavily on the "hate filled" side and it would appear that MNHQ agreed with this assessment.

Stellakent · 26/06/2020 19:16

I cannot believe what I am reading on this thread.

Nixen · 26/06/2020 19:17

Each to their own 👍🏼

Punkatheart · 26/06/2020 19:20

Depressing, isn't it Stella?

ItsInTheShed · 26/06/2020 19:25

Iggypoppie · 26/06/2020 19:26

I live a few streets away from the hotel and I feel so sorry for everyone involved. Mears Group had the brainwave to haul the asylum seekers from their homes, peniless, at the start of coronavirus. Asylum seekers are often traumatised, vulnerable and suffering from PTSD due to torture. One man took his own life last month in another hotel.

I have been having dark thoughts in the past few months and have been in my home, in my home country and have an income. I am scared that the trauma of being suddenly ripped from their homes has tipped someone over the edge.

My heart goes out to the victims including the brave police officer who has been injured.

Mears Group should be held at least partly accountable.

ItsInTheShed · 26/06/2020 19:28

why couldn't they self isolate in their homes?

Nicknacky · 26/06/2020 19:30

Nixen That was Stv News and other reputable sources that broadcasted 3 dead. Thankfully they was inaccurate.

I’ve just checked in case I read it wrong but they were “confirming” it and their posts are still online.

mumwon · 26/06/2020 19:32

w e don't know what happened who did what were drugs/ debt/mental health issues or whatever entailed in this making sweeping comments & assumptions (ie that the people placed there for instance are nicely spread out in all the rooms across the hotel or crammed in the cheapest area with good/poor facilities etc) What I do know is that having very little money & the whole isolation scenario has caused endless arguments bad temper frustrations & downright stupidity across this country & god help us everywhere else.
We will be told what has happened & the police on the BBC & elsewhere (except sky!) have made a big point of saying they are NOT treating it as terrorism & people shouldn't use this as a way of backing such attitudes- All of which suggest is was an interpersonal fight.
Poor innocent people who have to suffer this
I should also say that being an asylum seeker or even a long term resident from overseas who was entitled to stay - with the current government/home office attitudes & "failing" doesn't mean that our government or home office is obeying international guidelines - sadly very far from it.
I do find it incredible how much people "know" (or think they know) about details of this

Iggypoppie · 26/06/2020 19:34

@itintheshed I've heard that Mears Group were concerned about the safety of distributing their £35 cash weekly allowances during lockdown. Which strikes me as crazy if true.

Graphista · 26/06/2020 19:36

Such desperately sad and worrying news.

Hope all innocents are ultimately safe. I have a brother who's an officer though thankfully not in glasgow. But have other friends/family who are, I think if it were one of them I'd have heard by now but I can't be certain.

Heartbreaking for the officers loved ones whoever they are.

Awful news and so sad for glasgow which is generally a wonderfully friendly and welcoming city though admit I'm biased as it's my home town.

To all officers and their families my thoughts are with you

Jellycatspyjamas · 26/06/2020 19:36

why couldn't they self isolate in their homes?

Because they technically don’t have homes, have no money, aren’t eligible for any benefits or welfare payments - they are literally housed and fed, and my guess is the cheapest way to do that in a pandemic is to house everyone together in a hotel.

derxa · 26/06/2020 19:40

Awful news and so sad for glasgow which is generally a wonderfully friendly and welcoming city though admit I'm biased as it's my home town. Yes it's not my home town but it's a great place. Thoughts with all those affected in The Dear Green Place.

YankeeinKingArthursCourt · 26/06/2020 19:49

@ItsInTheShed

Well, based on some of your posts trying to be goady towards asylum seekers, perhaps they couldn't isolate "at home" because their homes were destroyed in UK drone strikes in their home country ( paid for by your tax money , so in fact, maybe you're actually responsible...).

TooTrueToBeGood · 26/06/2020 19:51

If you think that makes me racist, to be pissed off that someone who came here for their safety then decided to murder 3 innocent people in broad daylight in my town last week, then I’m fine with that

What makes you racist is the fact that you very clearly judge the many by the actions of a few. I would also bet a few quid you were firmly set in your anti-immigrant views long before the Reading incident.

TheMurk · 26/06/2020 19:53

Now being reported two dead, plus the knife man, plus 6 in hospital.

Three hotel staff among the dead or injured.

Mears Group took over from the equally hapless Serco and this is a government contract, ultimately the government (Scottish that is) should be answering some questions but as it’s well known in Scotland Nicola the Untouchable will evade any responsibility.

Iggypoppie · 26/06/2020 19:56

@themurk is it not be UK Government/ Home Office who awarded Mears the contract?

anicebag · 26/06/2020 20:00

I welcome hearing about the issues that people are raising here. Only through discussion do we understand where everyone is coming from. No doubt there will be lessons learned from this if everyone is allowed to speak to their concerns. So sad for the victims. Seems Covid is a pressure pot for a lot of reasons.

ItsInTheShed · 26/06/2020 20:02

@YankeeinKingArthursCourt dont be stupid, upthread it was clearly stated these people were already living in other homes here in the UK no 'drones' involved ....but moved 14 weeks ago.....i am asking why and what the reason for it was

nothing to do with tax money

Jellycatspyjamas · 26/06/2020 20:11

They will have been living in (pretty poor) accommodation across the city, they will have been moved to make it easier for providers to manage. When your whole budget is £35 per week you can’t access supermarket deliveries, you can’t afford any increase in your shopping budget (given prices have increased) so the weekly allowance would be shown up for the paltry amount it is (and god forbid we raise it to subsistence levels). When you have no bank account you need someone to physically give you the cash in the first place, asylum seekers will present at social work offices to collect their allowance, if you stop that process you don’t need to open or staff that building. The whole process is easier if you house everyone in one place and provide their meals (meaning you don’t need to give them their weekly allowance either). It’s also considerably cheaper. It also means treating people like chattels, but hey let’s not worry about that.

TheMurk · 26/06/2020 20:11

@Iggypoppie as housing and social care is devolved I assumed it was SG but you are right it’s a home office contract.
