Bournemouth beach - “Major incident”

BebeGlazer · 25/06/2020 15:07

The local police and council have now declared that Bournemouth beach is scene of “major incident” because people will not stay away. Overcrowding, littering, desperately dangerous parking.

Please, please, think kindly before travelling to small seaside towns at the moment. We cannot cope.

I’m not at all surprised that after being cooped up at home people are flocking to the beach now.

I live in a tourist area and am worried about the virus being brought in by visitors, but equally don’t think I have more right to be here than anyone else just because it’s where I happen to pay council tax. We don’t own these idyllic spots just because they are where we call home.

Laiste · 25/06/2020 16:22

Porcupineinwaiting Stop it! swimming pools and the uncleanliness of them is a BIG ol' phobia of mine HmmGrin

seenbeensbean · 25/06/2020 16:22

@botedbored

Is Bournemouth the closest beach to Birmingham?
No, Weston Super Mare is closest in time and distance. Barry Island and some of the other Welsh beaches aren't much further, neither is Brean.
StripeyBananas · 25/06/2020 16:23

@Coffeeandbeans

If you are furloughed and kids not at school what did the government really expect?
For people to behave themselves and take responsibility for themselves, others and the environment.
merrymouse · 25/06/2020 16:23

WTF else was likely to happen other than loads of people going to the beach FOR THE DAY?!? hmm It's not rocket science.

Yes, it was predictable.

Megatron · 25/06/2020 16:24

@EnlightenedOwl

I've actually had it myself .
I remember you from another thread Owl, were you tested for Covid19?
ArthurMorgan · 25/06/2020 16:24

Sorry, I can't get past 41 tonnes of rubbish in 2 days!

Pelleas · 25/06/2020 16:24

It does make you wonder how so many people can be off work on a random Thursday. I know some people are still furloughed, and there'll be people who are long-term unemployed anyway, but that crowd is more than you'd expect on a normal-times bank holiday.

xmummy2princesx · 25/06/2020 16:24

Omg it’s that awful

morethanafortnight · 25/06/2020 16:24

@BostonCheers

To be frank, the residents of these seaside towns cannot have it both ways. On the one hand, they are kicking off about people coming to visit but they are also complaining about lost jobs in hospitality.

I had been planning to book a staycation this summer in one of these resorts, but I will certainly not be now after witnessing the vitriol and hatred that so many locals seem to have for tourists!

Me and my family will be taking our custom and money to Spain as soon as practicable.

If you found tons of rubbish and human shit in every corner of your town, you wouldn't much like the visitors who did it either.
Sooooobored · 25/06/2020 16:25

In Wales you are still only allowed to travel five miles unless in special circumstances.

Thesearmsofmine · 25/06/2020 16:25

I would much rather be a coronaphobe than a coronacunt.

People are selfish, even without the virus going to a packed beach(they know it’s going to be rammed unless seriously thick), blocking roads, leaving rubbish etc is just ridiculous behaviour.

tobee · 25/06/2020 16:25

@TheVanguardSix

FTS. Even without Covid in the mix, it's utterly awful. I couldn't imagine wanting to be part of that mess. What's wrong with lemmings people?
It wouldn't be like this without the virus (and subsequent "lockdown") though to be fair.
ButterMeCrumpets · 25/06/2020 16:25

Bournemouth is always like that on a very hot day. The difference is for many people it's like a weekend/bank holiday due to being forced out of school or work.

quiteathome · 25/06/2020 16:26

I have seen footage of the trains as well. (Via a friend who works as a train driver on that route. It is worrying. The trains are full to bursting, and people have their masks on. However around their chins not over their faces.

I would love to go to the beach. It seems that a large propotion of people who have gone are the inconsiderate section of society.

Megatron · 25/06/2020 16:26

'Coronaphobia' is such a ridiculous term made up by Daily Mail-esq tabloids and now people go around trying to use it as an insult. It's a little silly.

BrandyandBabycham · 25/06/2020 16:26

I don’t even know what to say. I live in Cornwall & it’s only a matter of time before the hordes descend. The beaches near us don’t tend to get as busy as the surfing beaches on the North Coast eg Newquay. DH & I went to a small beach in a harbour village down the road this morning & it was fine until a group of about 15 people ( 3 generations) decided to plonk themselves down in front of us. And they were definitely not 2 metres away! Common sense in this country seems to have gone on holiday!!

OldQueen1969 · 25/06/2020 16:27

@BostonCheers

No hatred or vitriol from this Bournemouth resident - just justifiable fear for the health and safety of residents and visitors alike.

bengalcat · 25/06/2020 16:27

Much as I’d dearly love to drive down to the coast on a day off no way would I go anticipating the large crowds and its aftermath etc that the town of Bournemouth and no doubt others have to contend with . And with presumably limited cafes , crowded parking and no public conveniences open its absolute madness . If I was a councillor in a seaside town I’d look to open lavatories and employ PPE’d cleaners to clean regularly . Surely that’s better than exposing the locals / visitors etc to the hazards of human waste . Nothing my hound likes better than a visit to a beach where allowed plunging into the sea and crunching on beached crabs .

annabel85 · 25/06/2020 16:27

This is why relying on the common sense of people in this country is a sure fire way to sleep walk into a second wave.

The people on the beach don’t care about the virus. They don’t care about where they dump their rubbish or take a shit. They are the embodiment of the ME ME ME selfish society. Let em fucking catch it.

maddiemookins16mum · 25/06/2020 16:29

Yet they’re too scared to send their wains back to school.

Laiste · 25/06/2020 16:29

Sooooobored - In Wales you are still only allowed to travel five miles unless in special circumstances.

We should have kept that rule here. BUT thrown people a bone with regards to parks and open spaces a bit earlier.

Honestly you don't need a crystal ball to have foreseen this.

ButterMeCrumpets · 25/06/2020 16:29

I think a lot of people have children off school or still out of work so yes I do think it's like a very hot bank holiday. If you looked at the figures the gov gave for those working at home they weren't as high as I had expected. Most people don't/can't work from home. Most children can't go back to school and huge numbers of people are being stopped from working out of the home. Pubs/hairdressers etc aren't opening until July in England so I suspect those that will be returning are making the most of the weather.
