Bournemouth beach - “Major incident”

BebeGlazer · 25/06/2020 15:07

The local police and council have now declared that Bournemouth beach is scene of “major incident” because people will not stay away. Overcrowding, littering, desperately dangerous parking.

www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/18541911.bournemouth-beach-bcp-council-declares-major-incident/

Please, please, think kindly before travelling to small seaside towns at the moment. We cannot cope.

@ItsWhineTime

TBH, they look spaced out on the pictures on Sky News. What's the problem?
Read the BBC news report and you'll find out.
Gremlinpoop · 25/06/2020 16:15

I couldn't think of anything worse than sitting in a hot car for (probably) hours to get there and back. Spending the day on a hot crowded beach with probably lack of facilities etc.
Absolutely no way in hell. I'm staying home, home schooling (Sad) and enjoying the garden. But I bet this traffic affects me getting to work tonight ( I'm in the south), or mean staff coming from the coast are delayed. Why do people do this?

lynsey91 · 25/06/2020 16:15

@ItsWhineTime well they certainly don't look "spaced out" in the pictures in the Mail or Evening Standard.

Maybe you need to get your eyes test. Go for a drive, that should help

Coffeeandbeans · 25/06/2020 16:16

If you are furloughed and kids not at school what did the government really expect?

daysofpearlyspencer · 25/06/2020 16:16

Hasn't happened in other countries, just here which sadly does not surprise me. Dreading 4th July when the pubs open, my street will be wall to wall vomit and fighting, we just know it.

Pelleas · 25/06/2020 16:16

Bloody hell, that's awful. It's times like this I am glad I live in a grotty urban area with zero tourist appeal. I'm another who wouldn't want to go near those beaches even if there were no pandemic. A deserted pebble beach in drizzle is more my scene.

Laiste · 25/06/2020 16:16

First off: I'm not excusing the rubbish that's inexcusable.

However - you lock everyone down, for weeks. No work. No school. No cinema. No play groups. No cafes. No playgrounds. No theme parks. No soft play. No pubs. No sports clubs. No swimming poos. No play dates. No nothing.

Then, in the middle of the warmest spring for years you tell everyone it's ok to drive as far as they like FOR THE DAY.

WTF else was likely to happen other than loads of people going to the beach FOR THE DAY?!? Hmm It's not rocket science.

And think about how many families don't have a garden and/or live in cramped homes. If that were me i might risk a day at the beach.

Disclaimer - i haven't been to the beach for the day, and i never drop rubbish. BUT i'm hoping against hope that by July normal life will have resumed enough so that if we go ahead with our usual bucket and spade caravan holiday at the coast in July it's not a nightmare. I'm worried about it. But i guess even thinking about going makes me a moron or a brainless idiot in some people's eyes. Que sera.

Porcupineinwaiting · 25/06/2020 16:17

Spent the morning with the fire brigade putting out yet another fire in the woodland where I work. The smoke had literally not cleared and 3 dicks with a portable BBQ started to set up not 50 yards away.

Sometimes, often, I think humanity is just to stupid to survive, which is kind of a pity because the best we can do is actually pretty amazing. Sad

BebeGlazer · 25/06/2020 16:17

You took from this thread, the rolling news and one of the leading stories on the BBC that ... I should move house?! Seriously? ConfusedHmm

It's live pictures with a drone. I think I'll believe that, thanks.

swimming pools Grin

midsomermurderess · 25/06/2020 16:18

It's what Whitty (I think it was him) was tacitly hinting at, the danger of people 'mishearing' Johnsons advice around loosening restrictions. And, lo, here we are. He also warned of it leading to an 'uptick'.

merrymouse · 25/06/2020 16:18

Leaving aside the virus: Cars blocking access for emergency vehicles, rubbish, safety.

Safety is obviously a particular concern near water, and more so when large groups of people who don't know the local area have been drinking.

BebeGlazer · 25/06/2020 16:18

Sorry, my last post was to @Legoandloldolls. Thread moving too quickly! (And it’s been a long day, stuck in a small house with two toddlers, in this huuuge town of mine!)

sadly it will get worse. the MP for Brighton &Hove tried to bring it up......but johnson shut him down.

mencken · 25/06/2020 16:19

the problem is entitlement.

the beach is very busy - sensible people would a) work that out in advance as it is a hot day with lots of people off work b) not travel hundreds of miles and c) go somewhere else if they found it jammed when they got there.

the litter bin is full - sensible people take their litter home. The entitled public just drop the litter where they stand. Many are brought up that way (just look what happens outside schools or on routes that school kids walk).

you can't always have what you want. Life lesson 1. Life lesson 2 is don't be a messy skank.

Porcupineinwaiting · 25/06/2020 16:19

@Laiste I'm sure there are plenty of swimming poos at Bournemouth today. And quite a few on the sand, too. Grin

billysboy · 25/06/2020 16:19

I wonder how many of these people were clapping for carers on a Thursday night
people soon revert to being selfish fuckers given half a chance , it will be even better when the pubs open next week

BostonCheers · 25/06/2020 16:19

To be frank, the residents of these seaside towns cannot have it both ways. On the one hand, they are kicking off about people coming to visit but they are also complaining about lost jobs in hospitality.

I had been planning to book a staycation this summer in one of these resorts, but I will certainly not be now after witnessing the vitriol and hatred that so many locals seem to have for tourists!

Me and my family will be taking our custom and money to Spain as soon as practicable.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 25/06/2020 16:20

@teaflake

I wouldn't go, but I have some sympathy towards people who've been stuck in a flat without a garden, just wanting to get away for a bit. I don't suppose they expected the beach to be quite like that.

What I find more disturbing is the general 'get orff my land' attitude to people who don't live in a beauty spot or by the beach. Maybe, just maybe, other people want a tiny slice of what you have every day. It's very them and us.

See this is the diatribe I hear alot. I live in a seaside town which has just been like this recently. Lots of whinging that we should share. Firstly it's not for most here them and us , the ire is aimed at truly unpleasant people who leave their rubbish (including smashed beer bottles where we try to walk the dog ) , pushing my DC out if the way (I am absolutely not exaggerating) as they scream and shout and wail. How about the swathes of groups that stand in the middle of paths doing sodding tik tok dances because they are the beach and couldn't care less if they whack a passenger make it impossible to socially distance? Or the ones that swear words that would make sailors blush (and I seriously am the last person to have a problem with swearing but it's a tad tricky explaining to a 4 year old what C$&%t is and why that man is screaming it at his mate in the middle of the road whilst dumping his kebab on the floor). Yet I am supposed to put up with that and not complain because you are jealous? All of the above I've seen personally over the last 48 hours.

Nope sorry , it's not my beach of course which is why I have to deal with visiting idiots crowding in , urinating on the sand in front my my DC as we walk the dog past, but respectful nice decent visitors would likely experience no issues with locals , but huge apologies that you you are missing out so I should prostrate myself in apology ,martyr guilt tripping is disgusting compared to living on a scenario where it feels like town centres on a permanent Saturday night because people feel they have a right to behave how they like.

MrBennsshop · 25/06/2020 16:21

@EnlightenedOwl

People are not working ie either made redundant or furloughed. Or out of college and school. Hemmed in for months subject to ridiculous restrictions. Now there is disorder and civil unrest. Highly predictable going to get worse.
It's that you Donald?
Stopyourmessingaround · 25/06/2020 16:21

It's not a NIMBY issue and it goes beyond Coronaphobia. The area is gridlocked, emergency vehicles can't get through, local buses are struggling to operate, people are just dumping their cars anywhere, fully happy to take the fine. The litter left behind is horrendous and literally includes human crap. Locals and council staff are getting abuse/spat at. This is not just people wanting to enjoy a nice day at the seaside, it's like they've lost any ability to behave like human beings. The self-entitled, selfishness of it all is frightening.

Coffeeandbeans · 25/06/2020 16:21

It’s too hot to sit directly out in the sun. How many children and adults on that beach will be heading to A&E tonight with serious burns.

StripeyBananas · 25/06/2020 16:21

@runbummyrun

But *@AvonCallingBarksdale* this is what happens when you force a country into lockdown. This is the reason there is now no jobs, furloughed staff with likely no job to go back to. No kids in school, no childcare. Can't go on holiday .......
I don't think we should excuse bad behaviour becuase the country has been on lockdown.
OldQueen1969 · 25/06/2020 16:22

It's not just the virus, for those who think we are handwringing hysterical killjoys...... public health and safety will be impacted by the huge amount of rubbish - broken glass, hot barbecues in the sand, encouragement of vermin which is already a problem year round due to the huge amount of fast food outlets. And it seems bin emptiers have been abused / attacked too which is just bonkers....

There will be an uptick in injuries from minor to major and it will be difficult (already seen cases) for emergency services to work effectively for the public good.

Parking chaos impacts rights of way both public and private and there will be increased RTAs.

There will be heatstroke and alcohol related aftermath.

Petty crime will be prolific - we have alot of issues with county lines and various groups who like the area.

Apparently there was a big scrap near the harry ramsdens on the beach involving wooden weapons - am waiting to see the video of that.

The first people who complain that they haven't been treated properly either legally or medically will be those who helped cause the chaos.

I saw a figure of nearly half a million visitors over the last two days quoted, which is staggering.

We're not saying nimby - we're just saying not all at frigging once!!!
