I think a good way of dealing with the rubbish could perhaps be for local residents and businesses to come together for a mass litter-pick. Perhaps some of the furloughed hospitality staff could lend a hand! That way it can be cleared in a way that is cost-effective and allows the residents to appreciate the positive impact tourism has on their area.
Are you for real? How will this allow anyone to appreciate the positive impact of tourism? How far does this go? If tourists start committing violent crime against residents should the locals get together to offer each other free counselling, just so long as they focus on how great tourists are?
Defecating in gardens and dropping litter are not activities that should be encouraged or praised. It is not ideal that some people have done this and we should certainly not be praising people for abusing council staff or urinating in public.
I agree. I wouldn't be giving them say, financial rewards for their behaviour or standing by shouting 'go on, shit in the old lady's garden!' I don't think they should expect to be on the honours list just because of what they have done here.
However, these are all in the grand scheme of things very minor inconveniences compared to the huge economic and social benefit that tourism brings to coastal communities
Again, so we surrender all standards? Also, you are missing the point. This is not about tourism, tourists do not usually cause these problems. This is very much about this precise moment in time and its associated issues.
We should also not be castigating and flogging people who are stressed having just spent the last three months cooped up in tiny flats.
Well I am one of them. So please don't disagree with me, it might stress me further. Also don't patronise people who live in flats, we can maintain decent behavioural standards you know. We are not desperate to escape for a day of traffic jams, sweaty beaches and public defecation. We don't need allowances made for us so we don't have the added stress of picking up our litter. Not to mention that we don't even know if the visitors to Bournemouth live in flats.
