Bournemouth beach - “Major incident”

BebeGlazer · 25/06/2020 15:07

The local police and council have now declared that Bournemouth beach is scene of “major incident” because people will not stay away. Overcrowding, littering, desperately dangerous parking.

Please, please, think kindly before travelling to small seaside towns at the moment. We cannot cope.

"What I find more disturbing is the general 'get orff my land' attitude to people who don't live in a beauty spot or by the beach. Maybe, just maybe, other people want a tiny slice of what you have every day. It's very them and us"

I don't think that justifies 'major incident' levels of overcrowding. There are other beaches, resorts and beauty spots. I'm sure they are not all dangerously overcrowded, even though I'd guess most are very busy

Jenasaurus · 25/06/2020 16:02

If you go down to the beach today, you better go alone, for every person that ever there was, will gather there for certain because, todays the day of no more lockdown....

Sorry just the heat getting to me

Jenasaurus · 25/06/2020 16:02

I should have changed Person to idiot :)

BebeGlazer · 25/06/2020 16:03

But @teaflake that’s not what we’re saying. We’re saying - please don’t park over driveways, on verges, block roads etc. Please don’t leave tonnes of rubbish. Please don’t shout at, or spit at, people trying to keep calm order.

If it’s too full, then it’s too full.

It’s rather disingenuous of you to suggest this is a nimby issue.

@mrpumblechook

The problem is that people probably spent hours sitting in traffic jams to get there and would have to do the same to leave. No surprise that they don't turn around and go home when they get there. They are pretty much trapped.
Then why go?? Surely the packed roads are not a surprise? They happen most summers, never mind when England (NOT Wales) has been let out of lockdown 🤦🏻‍♀️

As a wise woman once told me ‘common sense is not a plant that grows in everyone’s garden’

merrymouse · 25/06/2020 16:04

What I find more disturbing is the general 'get orff my land' attitude to people who don't live in a beauty spot or by the beach. Maybe, just maybe, other people want a tiny slice of what you have every day. It's very them and us.

I sympathise with people in flats, but this is dangerous for everyone, however far they have travelled.

lynsey91 · 25/06/2020 16:04

I also should have said just what idiots decide that sitting on a beach in the full sun on the hottest day of the year is fun or safe?

It's far too hot for me even to sit in my garden. I am indoors with my dogs and 2 fans going. It's 37 degrees in my kitchen and thats not with oven or hob on.

I wonder too just how many of those idiots have taken their dogs with them?

SixesAndEights · 25/06/2020 16:04

@merrymouse

The government should have been leading by example, i.e. not going for drives to "test their eyesight" etc. Now all the idiots think if it's ok for Cummings et al to break the rules, so can they.

I think you are right - not just OK to break the rules on social distancing, but to break any rule. Why would you worry about parking if the government have endorsed car eye sight tests?

Re: parking. Apparently the fines are limited and people are accepting them because if they're four to a car they agree to split it. So a fine is not the disincentive it might be.

Again - in the past so many people wouldn't have broken the law/'rules' like this.

seenbeensbean · 25/06/2020 16:06

@EnlightenedOwl

Coronaphobes and their second waves. This rabid fear of a virus is destroying the country
Don't be so ridiculous, the fools who have travelled there for a day out are anything but Coronaphobes but are the ones who are causing the problems - the sensible people will be the ones who are going out in their local area and not putting insane pressure on tourist areas.
icedaisy · 25/06/2020 16:07

THE RUBBISH!!! How on earth can anyone ever think that's ok. Those pictures on BBC news of the mess. That is unbelievable.

BankofNook · 25/06/2020 16:07

What I find more disturbing is the general 'get orff my land' attitude to people who don't live in a beauty spot or by the beach. Maybe, just maybe, other people want a tiny slice of what you have every day. It's very them and us.

But residents don't have it "every day" when so many people are overcrowding the area that it becomes a danger. Imagine living somewhere that is a beauty spot or a beach and not actually being able to go out in your local area because of stuff like this.

littlejalapeno · 25/06/2020 16:08

so many people! Went down yesterday at 6pm as we pay for a beach hut and wanted to use it in the good weather. People were quite spaced out and keeping their distance but it did feel crowded. I do have sympathy with people stuck at home with kids, everyone seemed so happy to be out enjoying the fresh air and sunshine, but it looks like the crowds have doubled today and I just don’t know how anyone could enjoy being shoulder to sweaty shoulder in pandemic conditions. We were planning on heading down again this evening but will give it a miss, with very heavy hearts! And yes the beach is everyone’s to enjoy, but damn that beach hut is expensive so I wish we could be getting our moneys worth!

blacksax · 25/06/2020 16:08

Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun goes the song.

And they're all out there today, utter lunatics, the lot of them. I just hope that nobody has been mad enough to take their dogs with them, or the RSPCA will be declaring a major incident as well.

herecomesthsun · 25/06/2020 16:09

We have lots of people coming and lighting illegal barbecues and leaving rubbish that could kill wildlife in the New Forest Park too. Please don't do this, we don't want forest fires and injured animals.

OldQueen1969 · 25/06/2020 16:10

Our local rag has rolling live coverage - they're talking about possible dispersal orders and extra policing being brought in possibly. Please let the skies open soon..... although that will lead to lemmings on the road out..... as residents we're used to normal crowding and are usually prepared for it, but it's unlikely they have enough seasonal staff right now..... and I feel really sorry for those who are trying to work in the thick of it..... meh, what a mess......

Legoandloldolls · 25/06/2020 16:10

Bournemouth isn't a small town. You need to travel more to see what a small town actually is.

I wouldn't want to join in on that beach, my idea of hello on earth!

We go to our nearest beach in the evenings when its extremely quiet.

TUI have just cancelled our holiday for late July so prepare for more visitors OP. Still so many adults off work and kids off school = carnage.

Maybe look for a proper small town life? I'm under a hour from London in a town with about 20 shops on the night street in a market town. Its extremely nice here. Lifes to short to live in a hell hole if you the means to move

sqirrelfriends · 25/06/2020 16:10

How is that even an enjoyable day out... I'd rather say in my garden, or a park if I didn't have one.

HannahStern · 25/06/2020 16:11

Young Brits flock to beach on hot day!

Whatever next?

The end of the world is nigh....

botedbored · 25/06/2020 16:11

Is Bournemouth the closest beach to Birmingham?

mathdoc · 25/06/2020 16:11

@runbummyrun

"They need to wise up, no kids clubs over summer now either, no jobs, furloughed etc ...

Crack on I say"

I just don't understand this. For many people it has been a rubbish few months, and it looks like there is going to be two or three more rubbish months. And what is the reponse to this? Do things which might turn it into SIX more rubbish months! I find the need for immediate gratification with no thought of the long term consequences for themselves and the rest of society really disappointing.

littlejalapeno · 25/06/2020 16:11

Yes there were people in the woods on the cliff lighting illegal bbqs yesterday too @herecomesthsun and there was a major fire a few weeks ago near Swanage. And you know it’s just drunk idiots who don’t think the rules apply to them 😢

morethanafortnight · 25/06/2020 16:12

According to one local MP, there are 500,000 visitors to Dorset today Shock That's almost as many as actually live in the county.

No wonder the police and councils can't cope.

ItsWhineTime · 25/06/2020 16:13

TBH, they look spaced out on the pictures on Sky News. What's the problem?

SixesAndEights · 25/06/2020 16:14

The road to the east of Coniston Water has been closed because of a similar problem. People parking anywhere, leaving huge amounts of rubbish, shitting, and cutting down trees to have fires! (The article says anti-social behaviour, but another source I can't find now had more details.) The Lakes has been plagued by rubbish since lockdown was lifted.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 25/06/2020 16:15

As a PP said, I despair that this is England 2020.

On BBC news a reporter spoke to a tourist in Bournemouth from Birmingham and the tourist literally said "You have to understand, when you've been trapped in a city during lockdown for 3 months, just to see the sea is totally worth it. Even if it took 6 hours"

Fucking madness.
