Bournemouth beach - “Major incident”

BebeGlazer · 25/06/2020 15:07

The local police and council have now declared that Bournemouth beach is scene of “major incident” because people will not stay away. Overcrowding, littering, desperately dangerous parking.

Please, please, think kindly before travelling to small seaside towns at the moment. We cannot cope.
@Miljea are you saying that no-one was admitted to A&E in Bournemouth yesterday ?
I'm hard pressed to know how to counter that.

What divergence of statistical understanding is happening here when I can say that the Major Incident the council incited at the hospital resulted in no additional admissions?

Yes, I get that's hard to grasp, but that's the reality.

Sorry for any hysterical bubble bursting.

Meanwhile, here, at the epicentre of Bournemouth beach, is another drone shot of the 'chaos'....

Bournemouth beach - “Major incident”
OldQueen1969 · 25/06/2020 22:48

The council did. And they would have been in close consultation with all the public services before they did so. I think I'm right in that declaring a major incident starts the ball rolling for services to access further support and implement necessary public safety measures.

wildone84 · 25/06/2020 22:48

I should clarify, friend's perception doesn't quite tally with miljea's account of what happened today in Bournemouth. Fair enough, but guessing miljea wasn't actually there.

Miljea · 25/06/2020 22:51

wildone you have 'a friend's perception', I have my perception that maybe the rubbish collectors found one turd in one burger box.

Let's call that even bias, shall we?

TitianaTitsling · 25/06/2020 22:51

Who declared the 'major incident' ? I absolutely panicked when I saw this- I have family in Bournemouth, as l also had family who were near London Bridge at the terrorist attack, in Glasgow when the lorry crashed, and friends who were at the Ariana Grande concert, those are major incidents not a massive bunch of twats with disgusting hygiene and entitlement causing gridlock.

OldQueen1969 · 25/06/2020 22:51

Must remember to tell my so laid back they're horizontal hippy friends that their direct observations were hysterical.......

OldQueen1969 · 25/06/2020 22:52

The council declared the major incident. It wasn't on a whim.

wildone84 · 25/06/2020 22:53

If you were there or talked to someone who was there today, I'd call it an even bias. Otherwise I'd call it your perception of the media coverage.

frumpety · 25/06/2020 22:55

@Miljea you mentioned that the hospital declared a major incident and in your own words

So did the hospital. No one turned up

I only asked if no-one was admitted to the A&E department yesterday because you seem to have local knowledge. I thought it would be odd for there to be absolutely no admissions of any sort.

MadameMeursault · 25/06/2020 22:55

@Miljea

MadamMersault Why am I defending these fuckwits?

Because I see people. Human beings. Who wanted to have a day at the beach, one of the central southern coast's better beaches. People who have keenly watched how the government have directed, how they, yesterday, were promised a big lift in restrictions (albeit on July 4th). Who maybe did travel a long way for their lovely day out (which, contrary to what people want you to believe on here, probably did have that lovely day out!).

People who perhaps, erroneously were expecting things like open WCs, or a Council ready to handle the parking issues. And extra policing.

You see stupid people. They could have had an enjoyable day out without travelling God knows how far to the beach with thousands of other stupid people. There’s plenty of other places to go. Perhaps they could have researched the availability of public toilets and car parks before they set out. If they had a brain cell between them maybe.
WingingItSince1973 · 25/06/2020 22:58

Why do people insist on passing blame to the government? Yes restrictions have been lifted but its still 'proceed with caution' and its well reported that people are still dying or being infected. Are people that thick they need spoon feeding??? Sitting like sardines on a super hot day in blistering heat while still in a pandemic is just absolutely crazy. Saying that they've gone through 3 months of lockdown and they deserve to see the sea or take their children to see the sea! You do realise the sea will still be here when its safer to visit or less crowded. This is apart from the antisocial behaviour. Do people suddenly become neanderthals when they leave their hometown? Would they appreciate human waste or tonnes of rubbish outside their homes? I'm desperate to see the sea again but I'm also willing to wait and wouldn't goto a crowded one anyway. Yes the economy needs to keep going but I doubt anyone on that beach today or yesterday were thinking about that. Just utterly utterly selfish behaviour. So sad for the residents and all those having to clear up the aftermath from these hideous people!

Miljea · 25/06/2020 22:58

Oldqueen 'The council did'- does that make it valid? Could that have an element of blame sharing?

'Despite the somewhat compelling suggestion that many people might descend upon our 7 miles of (by English standards) 'glorious beaches' on a day, predicted a week ago, to be the hottest June day in decades, we didn't think to organise additional WCs with appropriate SD, enough bins, enough beach patrols, enough signage out-of-town along with turning people away- therefore we have to stand-up the local (big, FTR) hospital in a 'major incident' manner, to help mitigate against our lack of planning?

BostonCheers · 25/06/2020 22:59

As I've said @pallisers, defecating in gardens and dropping litter are not activities that should be encouraged or praised. It is not ideal that some people have done this and we should certainly not be praising people for abusing council staff or urinating in public.

However, these are all in the grand scheme of things very minor inconveniences compared to the huge economic and social benefit that tourism brings to coastal communities.

We should also not be castigating and flogging people who are stressed having just spent the last three months cooped up in tiny flats.

Miljea · 25/06/2020 22:59

Right I'm out of here. Welcome to the same level of critical thinking that will give you your No Deal Brexit.

wildone84 · 25/06/2020 23:03

Not all of us are Brexiters. Ta ta.

ineedaholidaynow · 25/06/2020 23:04

So how to do you know that everyone who has exhibited anti social behaviour been cooped up in a tiny flat?

HeIenaDove · 25/06/2020 23:04

Sitting like sardines on a super hot day in blistering heat while still in a pandemic is just absolutely crazy

Agree Can NOT see the appeal at all I hate the heat and am no fan of the beach unless im on it for a winter walk.

Just utterly utterly selfish behaviour

Mmmm yeah but so was continuing to go on ski trips/Chelteham/cruise ships and they were criticized nowhere near as much.

Justanotherlurker · 25/06/2020 23:06

Welcome to the same level of critical thinking that will give you your No Deal Brexit.

Imagine unironically trying to tie this into some political thought process and thinking you have the upper hand...

BostonCheers · 25/06/2020 23:08

@ineedaholidaynow

I think the term anti-social behaviour is overstating what have really been a few very minor issues. The majority of people who've visited Bournemouth have símply had a nice day at the beach.

SusieOwl4 · 25/06/2020 23:10

@Casino218. That is one of the most pathetic excuses for the situation I have ever heard.

They did not say park illegally so genuine people in trouble can’t be reached. They did say observe social distancing .

They did not say shit where you want.

They did not say leave unhygienic rubbish everywhere for some other person to deal with.

They did not say drink yourself into oblivion get violent and abusive.

What’s your surname , lemming?

wildone84 · 25/06/2020 23:11

Boston, were you there?

wildone84 · 25/06/2020 23:12

It's just that you speak as if you were.

OldQueen1969 · 25/06/2020 23:12

Well that escalated quickly.....

Does everything have to be an exercise in blame though?

Half a million people wanted a nice day out and descended on a town with a population of less than half that, nearly tripling the population, to enjoy the beach at the governments behest, with the caveat that they should be alert that there is an ongoing pandemic.

The towns council did what they could to prepare for an influx with relatively short notice but found the infrastructure overwhelmed very quickly, causing risk to both residents and visitors.

The necessary multi-agency response which had to be co-ordinated caused a major incident to be declared, due to reckless behaviour by a number large enough to threaten health, safety and the environment. It sounds dramatic but maybe it stopped another few thousands from turning up later, and allowed the emergency and support services to de-escalate the situation.

Factor in lack of manpower and resources and I can see the rationale.

if it means that harm was prevented, then it was worth the call.

Just my speculation.

wildone84 · 25/06/2020 23:13

And if you weren't there, don't tell local residents they're imagining what descended on them today.

Lardlizard · 25/06/2020 23:16

So what ! People can stay at home forever and most people are sick of it
If people don’t like living in a tourist spot move the hell away !
They don’t own the beaches
Idiots

But as for the litter leavers that’s just gross !
But that happens everywhere not just the seaside !
