Here's a new thread for discussing aircon, aubergines, and Goth music.

@PinkFondantFancy totally but this is only the Dds not me so I care quite a bit less about that Grin

trappedsincesundaymorn · 24/06/2020 11:50

Morning all.

AnxiousElephant77 · 24/06/2020 11:59

I'm not sure it's just dementors saying the vaccine has been ordered, that's also those of us praying for a bit of hope out of this shit show.

AnxiousElephant77 · 24/06/2020 12:01

The school have just phoned to speak to ds and the pastoral woman that phoned me said we 'all need to prepare for a second wave.' She said it as if she was very much in the know.

I'd love to know how these people are accessing information that the rest of us can't.

BarkandCheese · 24/06/2020 12:07

We booked a holiday last night, a week in a static caravan by the sea in Suffolk for mid July. It’s not exactly what I thought this summers holiday would be, it was meant to be New York, Washington and colonial Williamsburg, but right now just getting away feels like bliss. It so good to have something to look forward to and plan for again.

HesterShaw1 · 24/06/2020 12:08
@HesterShaw1 it definitely sounds like sinuses. It's really gross but have you tried a netipot to rinse the sinuses? It's disgusting but works wonderfully I've found. The other less gross option is to get an Olbas Oil inhaler - white stick you stick up your nose to snort and it gives the most lovely instant relief
Oh yes I've been snorting away on my white stick like a coke head.

Will try the old boiling water, olbas oil and towel next. I will emerge scarlet and sweaty

DrearyWallAntler · 24/06/2020 12:08

They are parroting the BMA and Royal colleges from this morning, so in fairness they probably believe they are on solid ground.

Hearing it all this morning I was basically screaming at the radio 'based on what fucking evidence'. It seems the difficulty is that there is no definition of a 'wave', so the meat packing plant outbreak in germany can be described as a 'wave' where logically 'localised outbreak' makes more sense (but is less scary). Wave tends to imply an outbreak in circulation in the general population.

So while BMA et al are probably right that we will see localised outbreaks the use of 'wave' is is slightly eyebrow raising and overly emotive whilst not actually being technically incorrect....

countrygirl99 · 24/06/2020 12:12

Did anyone see the playground thread on AIBU last night. It was quite refreshing. A couple of people started dementing and got short shrift.

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 24/06/2020 12:14

Radio 2 Jeremy Vine on now discussing the reactions of two distinct groups to the changes to lockdown. I'd argue there are more like 3 or 4, but some good opinions and classic dementoring.

Yes, almost everyone said they were happy to go back to playgrounds. Considering a few weeks ago someone was being lambasted for letting their toddlers play in a sand pit it’s quite a change of heart.

I’m wondering how many people have quietly name changed to hide a reverse ferret now the tide of opinion has changed.

pollyhemlock · 24/06/2020 12:20

Preparing for a second wave seems sort of sensible. It doesn’t mean there’s going to be one. As someone said on one of the other threads, having fire extinguishers in a public building doesn’t mean you expect a fire to break out. You’re just more ready if it does. I agree that localised outbreaks seem more likely.

I like listening to Jeremy Vine, the people he gets on there sometimes make me wonder!
Teateaandmoretea · 24/06/2020 12:27

My local centre said that they can't resume beginner lessons until SD scrapped altogether due to the need for instructors to get close to adjust stirrups etc. Gutted as my kids did some riding before, parked it because they we're too busy, and now I'd love them to do some sport/activities again. They've gone from hours a week to nothing.

They seemed to be suggesting that parents can support. I guess that as a lot of their clients are disabled that is more normal.

BarkandCheese · 24/06/2020 12:27

I’m the opposite, I can’t bear the Jeremy Vine show. I find the Ken Bruce show very pleasant and comforting in its familiarity, but the radio goes off straight after. Jeremy Vine makes me feel narky and despairing.

Cattermole · 24/06/2020 12:28

As I looked up when @HesterShaw1 was talking about it elsethread, there had been a 70% increase in outbreaks in schools as a result of children returning to school.
The "number of acute respiratory outbreaks rose from 14 to 24" - out of 32,770 educational settings.

An "outbreak" being defined as two or more people

Even the word "outbreak" is slightly preposterous, isn't it?

Teateaandmoretea · 24/06/2020 12:28

Too right. They can inject me with whatever they like.

Teateaandmoretea · 24/06/2020 12:34

With what, 10x the number of children in? 🤔

AnxiousElephant77 · 24/06/2020 12:35

@Teateaandmoretea And me.

I'm not saying don't prepare for a second wave, although I have no idea what that would look like. I'm saying that it's bad enough without a five minute phone call from the school having to involve discussion about an inevitable second wave, as I'm sure the very lovely woman that works in pastoral care has no authority on this subject. Like the rest of us.

Sorry if I'm tetchy, it's hot and I'm trying to stay positive which is bloody impossible.

PickAChew · 24/06/2020 12:36

I think we all have our hair envy. Mine is in a lob, now unintentionally properly shoulder length, and I can just about get it into pigtails or a ponytail, with the help of lots of grips. It's extremely coarse and thick and I've yet to find any clips up to the job. It has a habit of breaking them. Even when I had it long, in my early 20s, I never successfully plaited it!

My hair salon has a message on face book saying they will be opening from the 8th and contacting existing clients to make appointments. It was doing OK but now I can't wait because the ends are getting Crispy and it's no longer holding a presentable curl because the ends look a mess.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 24/06/2020 12:36

Preparing for a second wave seems sort of sensible. It doesn’t mean there’s going to be one

We did a virtual tour and meeting for local college last night.

One of their new campuses is now delayed - but they've plans for transport from there to existing sites and plans for going on-line at short notice if nessesary next year.

We won't need it next year - but it was all very reassuring.

A vaccine would relieve a lot of worry for my older relatives with complex medical needs - but it would be really quick though fantastic if they could roll it out by Christmas this year - I though next spring was looking more likely.

Teateaandmoretea · 24/06/2020 12:40

@AnxiousElephant77 she sounds like a proper dementor to me. We’re all tetchy Flowers

I don’t see the vaccine as being to avoid a second wave, I see it as a way to get back to normal. We are so far from that and all this gaslighting about the ‘new normal’ is trying to hide it.

PickAChew · 24/06/2020 12:40

Jeremy vine makes me want to break the radio. Love Ken but I have 6 music on in the house. No radio right now because Mary Ann Hobbs and Shaun Keaveny have been alternating weeks and this is a Mary Ann week.

AnxiousElephant77 · 24/06/2020 12:42

I've just mistakenly read the Chief Dementor's comments about it last night, and he seemed very clear that we would be in this situation through winter and into spring.

I just wish we knew what any of that looks like. I think it's the ambiguity of the statements that cause the most anxiety.

torydeathdrug · 24/06/2020 12:44

Ds has just given me a demo of all the swear words he knows - each one backwards so he doesn’t get shouted at Grin

AnxiousElephant77 · 24/06/2020 12:45

Although I do want to make the point that because of the wedding, I'm cognisant of the fact that I do have a very different agenda at play here, and I know how selfish that is.
