It's got to be mayo obviously - you can shove your vinegary salad cream nonsense quite frankly. DSis and I almost had a proper argument about this last year because she is on the side of the salad cream. She was wrong of course. Wink

Salad cream all the way! Especially mixed with egg in sandwiches.

CottonSock · 22/06/2020 19:31

Mayo mayo mayo

Thegreymethod · 22/06/2020 19:35

Mayo, preferably Heinz full fat but any brand except Hellman's 🤢
I do like both though and salad cream is amazing with tuna

Gwynfluff · 22/06/2020 19:36

Salad as a child. Mayo as an adult

WinWinnieTheWay · 22/06/2020 19:41

Salad Cream is fermented vomit.

Mayonnaise is the best condiment in the world. Even better than the ones I haven't tried yet.

Small tin of sweetcorn - drained
Small cubes of cheddar cheese
Salad cream

Mix together in the tin and eat out the tin with a fork.

Your welcome.

steppemum · 22/06/2020 19:47

Did you know that may has a different recipe in every country?

There was a inside the factory at one of the European mayo factories, I think it was Hellmans but maybe not
They said that every country has their own flavour about what is 'correct' for mayo. Dome like it sharper, some more creamy, etc. So the Hellmas sold in Germany is different from that sold in France and different from that sold in UK. All labelled Hellman's mayo.

It makes sense, becuase we regularlyl go to France and Hellman's mayo there is quite yellow, and less like mayo and more like salad cream. The mayo in UK is veyr creamy. I prefer the french.

DKanin · 22/06/2020 20:00

Mayo, but I do like both

Sonichu · 22/06/2020 20:02

Salad cream all day. Mayonnaise is just flavourless slime.

Bellablahhole · 22/06/2020 20:06

Mayonnaise is my one and only. Salad cream is vile.

I seen a recipe online.

Can of sweet corn
Blob of mayonnaise (or salad cream for you)
Handful of grated mozzarella
Melt the whole lot in a pan with salt and pepper
Eat with fork

Looked decent!

SoftBlocks · 22/06/2020 20:09

It should be both! Ok if I had to choose then mayonnaise but sometimes you’ve got to have salad cream e.g in a (grated) cheese and carrot sandwich.

vinoandbrie · 22/06/2020 20:11

Mayo. Obvs.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 22/06/2020 20:13

@doadeer - mayo with wholegrain mustard That sounds fantastic, I've got to go and make some up now... Why did I never think of that? I usually add Encona Hot Pepper sauce, (to almost everything). Smile

What does it taste like?

@MissConductUS It tastes of fetid feet. I most definitely do not recommend.

I see. No doubt it's import has been blocked then, in the interests of public health. It does seem to have some fans on this thread, just confirming that you Brits can be a bit eccentric have your own tastes.

Thanks for the information @Megatron. Smile

Mayo all the way. Salad cream is rank 🤮

redeyetonowheregood · 22/06/2020 21:16

Mayonnaise without question. I was brought up in Germany so never have chips without it.

MissConductUS · 22/06/2020 21:20

OMG, it's Miracle Whip!

10 American Substitutes for British Grocery Staples

Salad Cream = Miracle Whip
Before Brits had heard of French dressing, there was Heinz salad cream. It’s about as sophisticated as wearing your pants on your head, but no substance on the market tastes quite as good squirted on the underside of a celery stick. Luckily for Brits living in the U.S., there’s Miracle Whip—a virtually identical product. For ages the name put me off: “whip” to a Brit sounds like something desserty. Even in a land where sweet and savory mesh seamlessly, I wasn’t prepared to spread pudding on a sandwich.

**
It'll be a cold day in Hell before a bottle of Miracle Whip enters my kitchen. Yuck!

Laiste · 22/06/2020 21:35

Mayo.

lf there HAS to be only one.

Galvantula · 22/06/2020 22:45

Salad Cream. (Preferably Heinz)

Mayo is too creamy for me.

The yellow stuff that forms when salad cream dries is the stuff of pure evil though.
